1951 F1 documentary posted to binaries group

Ped Xing captured the Speed Channel 'Legends of Motorsport' episode on 1951 European racing and posted it as yEnc-encoded RAR files. Several readers struggled to decode it, and ymenard attacked yEnc. The help eventually worked, and EldredP offered FTP hosting.

Speed channel aired a program - "Legends of Motorsport - European Motor Racing 1951". It has footage of F1 at Silverstone and the Nurburgring, and the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio. I have video captured this program and am currently posting it to alt.binaries.simulators.autos The video is in DivX 5.02 format, so you need the free codec available at http://www.divx.com/divx Enjoy!

I'm not familiar with how to grab multi-part yEnc posts like that. Could you suggest a good program for doing that? Tried that, unfortunately all it did was give me a huge text file. Normally when I combine binaries in OE it gives me a binary attachment. I don't think it understands yEnc. I managed to get as far as combining, saving, and ydecoding the file. Now I have a bunch of rar files. Winace just seems to want to decompress them individually. I assume there is some way of decompressing and combining them? Also, why the multiple formats? Not trying to flame, I just don't understand why it is necessary for me to go through so many steps to get this thing working. Well I figured out the yEnc part. Now I guess I have to go get WinRAR too. This is just annoying. Despite the fact that I have XP which natively supports zip format, I still have to have four other decoders/decompressors to use files from the internet. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful to Ped Xing for uploading the files, I just wish people would stop inventing new formats for no particular reason... <grumble> <grumble> "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

It is done to cut down on posting size, which helps propagation and retention. Usenet servers are being overloaded with binaries so anything that can be done to cut down on size is a good thing, in my opinion. Of course, nobody is forcing you to download the files. I didn't have to go to the trouble of posting it and could have just kept the video for my own use. But I figured some in this group would enjoy it, so I decided to share. Since people want to complain about something that is freely given, I will cease to do this sort of thing in the future. Finally, I wasn't speaking to you, so your reply wasn't needed or wanted.

This is a good, free program: http://www.ultimatezip.com/ Just double-click the part01.rar and extract. The procedure I followed for posting is pretty standard for those dealing with large binaries in newsgroups. I was not doing anything abnormal. I am sorry you find it too much trouble. Why the multiple formats? Posting one large avi in one message is a bad idea for several reasons, one of which is that it makes is very likely the whole thing won't come through. Having it in chunks also enables the use of parity files (SmartPAR). http://www.smr-usenet.com/tutor/smartpar.shtml

I don't think that's really called for. This is an open newsgroup, you are talking to everyone. I couldn't get the thing to work either, and it's a shame, but there you go. Thanks for trying, and for those more savvy than me I hope it's good, but personally I don't usually use binary newsgroups much, and some instructions in the first post (your original message here) might have helped. I hope you continue to contribute to the community as it's always appreciated by someone, but please bear in mind that not everyone online is as clever as you ;-) Can you host it somewhere? Malc.

Okay I think I got it. I was confused by the different file types, but apparently some of those are only parity files? Anyway, is the end result one file of ~128 meg size? If so WinRAR worked and I just didn't realize it. Thanks again for the help. "Ped Xing" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Okay, but do we really need both? Does Rar have capabilities that Zip does not? Again these are honest questions, I am not trying to get into anybody's shorts or anything. Well, not here anyway... Actually now that I have gone and downloaded yEnc32 I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. It's free and there doesn't appear to be any adware. Granted it is another duplicate format and I don't know why we need it, but other than that why do you think it is bad? Just curious. So the reason some folks USE rar is because the final product is smaller than the same file compressed with Zip. While their function is similar, the higher compression can be a cost saving factor for those web hosts who have to pay for file storage etc. dave henrie

Well I don't know about needing... ,but if one would make a case that .rar is redundant b/c of .zip, .zip would be redundant b/c of .lzh, .gz, .arc, .lha and all the formats predating it by many years. ...ace on the other hand... ;-) The reason I don't like rar is that it isn't backwards-compatible. They keep changing the algorith between versions. A WinRAR3.0 file can't be opened by WinRAR2.5 for instance. pkzip has been the same for at least 12 years AFAIK. The main advantage it has is that it's capable of splitting the archive file easily into several files(.r00, .r01,... et.c.). With zip it gets trickier, I don't know if it's even possible in WinZip without archiving to floppy.

Check out tucows for "Newsbin". It's a dedicated binary tool for usenet. multithreaded too (up to 6 threads) and pretty fast. Can run at the same time as your regular newsreader as well. You can point it at a newsgroup, give it a file mask and it will download every matching file. Even better, give it a list of 2000 newsgroups and go to bed. Be prepared to delete a lot of crap the next morning but there are always a few useful files. iksteh

It still keeps everything wrong with uuencoding. It creates massive confusion for the users, for the small benefits of it. It's spreading like a plague. It doesn't rely on MIME content tagging. Yes, you are probably right. It was just my frustration coming to boil, I suppose. I have done quite a bit of binary posting in other groups in the past and never once have I heard a complaint or criticism when doing so. I have always tried to adhere to the popular, accepted methods of posting. > I couldn't get the thing to work either, and it's a shame, but there What exactly is the problem you are having? > you go. Providing detailed, step by step instructions on how to download and process binaries from usenet is a bit beyond the scope of what I was trying to do. No, I don't assume everyone knows exactly what to do, so when people have mentioned having problems I have tried to point them in the right direction. > Can you host it somewhere? I wish I could! But serving bandwidth on the Internet is not free and not cheap. If someone has a site that could host a 125mb file I would gladly FTP it to them (or ICQ or whatever).

I used OE but would not recommend it. It had to allocate a huge page file just to save the download and my poor machine thrashed for a good 20 minutes, despite having 384 meg of RAM and gobs of free disk space. I'm sure there is a better way to do it. Some other people have mentioned alternatives in this thread and based on my experience I would definitely say try them rather than trying to get OE to work. I tried the combine & decode in OE which only took a few seconds but then it produced a huge text file full of garbage & spent 20 odd minutes searching for URL's. I didn't realise the extra messages were for redundancy, so I had just picked one of each title to combine. I'll work it out eventually ;-) Malc.
