Flame warSierra deletes anti-Japanese car decal; free speech row

John Simmons complained that Sierra deleted his NR2002 'JAP CARS' decal post. Most posters said Sierra had every right to remove a racial slur and that free speech does not oblige a forum to publish anything, and he defended it as patriotism against Toyota joining NASCAR. The argument became heated, with insults on both sides.

I posted a decal I'm using on all my cars in the Sierra NR2K2 paint forum, and they deleted the message. The decal is the words "JAP CARS", with a red circle around it and a slash through the text.

John. You can stick your head in the sand, you can belly-ache all you want, but Companies like Sierra are NOT going to allow you to post antiANYTHING messages. Do you think there are no Asian Americans(or Japanese in general) who sim-race? Why do you suppose NASCAR is allowing Toyota to join in? Because they know that companies like Toyota represent a large percentage of people that, at present, Nascar doesn't sell to very well. What are your paticular dislike of Japanese cars? A goodly portion of TOyota's are built right here in America, probably more Toyota's are assembled within the USofA than Dodges.(which farm out a sizeable portion of thier manufactuering to Canada and Mexico.) Do you dis-approve of Japanese companies taking American money? Well GM has offshoots in Australia, Britain, Sweede, etc etc. Same for Ford...and just who owns Daimler-Chrysler? Are American Executives MORE WORTHY of your $$?(see Enron, Worldcom, Tyco, etc etc) So now your in a tizzy because in about 4 or 5 more years there will be a Camry at Daytona? Seems like there are plenty of other things to get all chuffed about rather than ANOTHER manufacturer taking part and supporting a racing series. Ask CART if they'd like to have Toyota back. dave henrie "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > I posted a decal I'm using on all my cars in the Sierra NR2K2 paint > forum, and they deleted the message. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I would like to add that the Camry that is sold in America was also designed and is built in America by Americans. The design studio is right here in good old Ann Arbor, MI. The Camry is as American as a Dodge, and has every right to be represented in NASCAR. "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:IklU9.658877$%[email hidden]... > John. Without getting into the subject matter of your complaint, I just wanted to comment on your "right to free speech", and the inevitible claims of "censorship" which are sure to follow. Yes, the Constitution of the United States guarantees you the right to whatever opinion you want and the right to express that opinion without fear of persecution or prosecution. What it most emphatically does NOT guarantee you is that someone is obligated to provide you with the means to express that opinion. So, if some third party owns a privately operated website (or radio station or newspaper or TV station) there is no obligation on their part to give you a forum to publish or broadcast your opinion. So if, for example, you had expressed your negative opinions about Japanese cars in NASCAR in a letter to the editor or an Op-Ed piece to your local newspaper and they declined to publish it, does this constitute "censorship" or otherwise violate your right to free speech? Nope, not at all. This third party also has "rights", and one of them is the right to broadcast/publish whatever they choose. You are perfectly entitled to start your own website (or radio station or newspaper or TV station) and broadcast whatever opinion you want. As long as you are not engaging in slander or libel or breaking any anti-hate laws, then no problem, rant away.

Didn't really want to go there, but since you brought it up... I have worked for Chrysler for 21 years. A couple of years ago it became a German company. Now all Chryslers, Dodges, and Jeeps are technically German products. Yes, the Jeeps that conquered Europe in WWII are now produced by a German company. My division makes the Neon and the PT Cruiser. One plant in the US, one in Mexico. Not to take anything away from the US guys, but you know where the hardest working people are? In the Mexican plant. I have been to both, I know what I am talking about. I spec out and release starters and alternators among other things. Most of those parts are produced by Japanese companies, but you know where they are made? Most of the ones we buy are made in Tennessee and Ohio. They do as a policy start out by assembling a product in the States from Japanese components, but that is only because of their conservative approach to quality. In order to compete in price they have to find local suppliers, so any part that has been in production for more than a few years is almost entirely made in America. Probably sounds like I am rambling a lot here, but I do have a point - this is a global economy, we are all in this together, and the ignorance that breeds nationalism has no place in modern society. The USA can't survive by itself, and neither can anybody else, including Japan. Competition is good, prejudice is not. To get back to John's original point, if foreign companies shouldn't be allowed in NASCAR, does that mean Dodge should be kicked out? It is owned by DaimlerChrysler, a German company. If Dodge can stay in, there is no reason to keep Toyota out, because the Camry is in exactly the same situation as the Intrepid - designed and built by Americans (err, Canadians in the case of the Intrepid) who just happen to work for a foreign company. Nope, those parts aren't vital at all... fascism is about dictatorial control of the government, using the power of the state to squelch the opposition. Militarism, racism, and nationalism are just tools that the leader may or may not use to gain or maintain control. Other causes or objectives can and have been used.

Well, I coulda said that, but: 1) I was looking for something that took up as little space as possible, while being as large as I could make it, and the circle with the words "Jap Cars" lent itself well to that design issue. 2) Saying "Japanese Cars" was, IMHO, too close to showing considered respect for the idea of allowing foreign cars into Winston Cup. 3) Other like-minded individuals don't mind it saying "Jap Cars". 4) I'm not a politician, and I have no desire to coddle whiney little bitches or woirry about satisfying some bleeding heart liberal's concept of being politically correct.

"John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > STFU - Being from Europe, you're probably used to having your right > to free speech imfringed upon, but I'm *not*. In case you were not aware, there is a global trend to see American people as being arrogant and self centred. Both your decal, and your comments regarding free speech don't exactly form a good defense. You are ignoring the rights of the website publisher to select appropriate content for their pages. This is just as important as your right to free speech. I guess this is what I see as arrogance. You cannot demand freedom of speech unless you believe in and are prepared to protect the freedom of others (ie websites). If everybody put their efforts into protecting _each other's_ rights to freedom of speech, lifestyle etc, then we would rarely have to worry about our own. I don't think your decal was racist - racism is just an easy way to point. I don't think NASCAR relates to real cars any more than our own v8 series translates to a holden or ford road car - they are completely built from the ground up. So I hardly see sticking Japanese style panels and badges on what is essentially the same spec race car as all the dodges and chevs and whatnot as really being an issue. Might actually start seeing some technology in nascar engines too :) iksteh

Then get your own website and forum and post what you want. Then you would be practicing your free speech rights. Posting something inflammatory on another's site and screaming censorship is just stupid. Again, post it on your own site and then you will have censorship rights over it and be able to let people say what they want or not, after all, it's a free country......... to a point. Oh, and after you create your anti Japanese NASCAR website............ don't be surprised when only a handful of people frequent it............ Vintook P.S. I don't know the the forum in question but assuming they have good moderators they made the choice of removing the post because it would cause a fight to break out, not because of any percieved racism. If posted at RSC it might be removed as well depending on the tone of the post, in which subforum it was posted, what the context was, the history of the poster and a load of other factors. John you posted something the forum moderators saw as an invitation to war, It's their house and they are absolutely free to do whatever they want to stop wars in their own house, I fail to see where free speech (or lack of it) come in ?? I am not *that* surprised they deleted it. The intention could be interpreted as anti-Japanese regardless of the real intention. The real intention? Probably no different than my disdain at the Quattros "ruining" the spectacle of rallying. I know at the time time I was very anti 4WD in rallying as it separated the field in such a dramatic way. I don't know too much about Nascar, but if a manufacturer "war" started the spectacle could change somewhat. Think of the yellows they would have to keep throwing for debris... Cheers Tony

My complaint rests squarely on guys like you who take this issue out of context so they can use big words like "xenophobic". John's point, whether you agree or not, is EXTREMELY simple to grasp. He sees NASCAR as an American institution. I personally find that silly but he's entitled to his belief and I'm not going to debate the merits. His complaint is that allowing foreign cars breaks from TRADITION which he reveres. Again, silly to me but a REASONABLE belief nonetheless and one to which he is entitled to passionately support. More importantly, it is a belief that seems honestly fueled by patriotism and respect for tradition. He's not worried about: "The Jap-o-nese are comin' in here and takin' jobs from good ole God fearin' Americans". Any claim that John is xenophobic is truly ignorant. It's a wonderful technique used by the media to spin a bigger story out of a much smaller issue; something that should be frowned upon in ng's. ;0) -- Joe M. > -Tim >

And you seem to be refreshingly honest in your attempt to paint him as a complete racist beyond anything he actually stated. Yes, his remarks could have been taken as racist by some people. I don't agree with his argument at all but will not stoop to the level of "race-baiter" to try and squash his argument. People who stand up and scream "racist" the loudest are usually people that can't come up with a legit counter point and just take the easiest line. Use your brain for a change and contradict him on a more mature level instead of groveling in the sewer with the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. I'm guessing it's the word "JAP" that caused the problems, as it is a derogatory term. As a Native American, I can tell you that words do in fact hurt. It's not just some politically correct idea that's run amok, many of those words have alot of hatred in them. MTCW, Gary
