Careful with that axe, Nick 26 Jan 2003 17:35 UTC#80247
Been playing GTR2002 on my brand new Radeon 9500 Pro, everything runs great, I have the details almost maxxed out and I get super smooth frame rates(only 5 cars on course, havn't tried a full field yet). I just may become addicted to racing sims again. Specs: Athlon 2400XP 2.0ghz K7S5A motherboard w/SIS735 chipset 256MB DDR RAM ATI Radeon 9500 Pro Windows XP Nick http://www.thepenelopeproject.com

Nice system Nick (I have the same MOBO with an AMD 1600/GF4 Ti 4400/512 MB RAM). Do yourself a favor and get another 256 MB of RAM. You'll need it with XP and appreciate the difference in games and apps. -- Joe M.
Hey Nick, Nice system! I'm also considering upgrading to either the 9500 or 9500Pro. Can you be more specific on how it's running? 1. Can you post some framerates you're getting in GTR2002 (CNTRL-F) and in any other sims like NR2002 or the NR2003 demo? 2. What videocard did you upgrade from and what were your framerates with it, for basis of comparison. 3. How difficult was the upgrade/installation? Any headaches with removing old drivers, etc? 4. Have you tried overclocking and/or the hack that supposedly makes it run on par with the 9700 Pro? 5. .....and finally (most importantly to me) -- any problems running GPL with it? Thanks! I'm running GTR2002 under 1280x960 32 bit resolution, forced 4X anti-aliasing, and all the graphic options set to high except for special effects, dirt, skids, and smoke which are set to medium. I get 16fps at Donington by myself and 12 with a full field and 14 cars viewable. Seems kind of wierd to be getting FPS that low, becuase it runs smoothly, in my opinion, in both cases. I do not have any of the NASCAR games installed on my system. If it helps, Madden 2003 runs very smoothly at the highest resolution, except for a few jerks every 15 or 20 seconds. Don't know how to fix that, I guess thats a question for MaddenMania. > 2. What videocard did you upgrade from and what were your framerates withit, > for basis of comparison. My original card was Hercules 3D Prophet 4500, F12002 would not even run on it, even with a 2.0ghz. In NR2002, I was getting about 15 FPS at 800x600 32 bit, no anti aliasing, and it was on my old system, an Athlon 750mhz with 256 MB SDRAM. > 3. How difficult was the upgrade/installation? Where can I find info on this hack? > 5. .....and finally (most importantly to me) -- any problems running GPLwith > it? I've only run a few laps at Watkins Glen with a full field, but I've seen no problems and it runs at a perfect 36FPS. On the Hercules with the 2.0ghz chip, I had a few graphic errors like the rearviews freezing. Hope this helps you out, I'm thinking about re-installing NR2002 so if I do I'll post the FPS. Nick

The "hack" is for the 9500 NON PRO (see Riva Tuner). It unlocks the 4 disable pipelines making the 9500 perform at 9700 specs (since they both share 256-bit architecture - the 9500 pro is 128-bit so the hack won't do anything). If you use the software hack on a 9500 AND overclock it (if it has good ram) then you can run it at 9700 Pro levels. -- Joe M.
