Hey man I am watching last years race at the gold coast and many of the
competitors made their compulsory tire change on or about lap 4-5. Why?
Obviously the tires will last the race then why not wait till most of the
others have pitted and use the clear track to your advantage? I must be
missing something in the rules or strategy?
Seems odd seeing a Falcon ;)

Aussie V8 Supercar pit strategy and road cars
Mitch_A asked why Australian V8 Supercar teams made their compulsory tyre stops so early. Answers covered tyre allocations, pit windows and the rule that stops could not be made under the safety car, plus complaints about inconsistent kerb-hopping penalties. The thread wandered into Holden, Ford Falcon, Mustang and GTO road cars.

strategy I would think When you are in a line of cars, it is difficult
to run clean laps. So those who are not in a clear posisiton will come in
early to hopefully come out to a clear track. They can then run faster
laps than the cars stuck in the pak. THEN when the pak cars pit, they
'should' be behind the early pitters.

If thaqt would mean that their tires probably are of a soft compound and/or
pretty 'scrubbed' from the start - hence their short life.

I can see some little logic with the fact that the best thing you can have
is to pit under green *just* before a full course yellow. On Nascar road
tracks, it's been the winning strategy, but it's pure luck.
You waste several seconds by going into the pits to change those tyres. You
do not gain those lost seconds easily, especially considerning how often the
yellow flag goes out. I don't see how can anybody gain 30 seconds lost on a
pitstop by running alone vs. running in a pack. It's not like you loose 5
seconds a lap just by being behind somebody.

But then, those early pitters will have to pit again.

This is the first year I've actually watched Aussie V8s, but this is what
I've learned so far.
Most of the races have a fixed number of tires allowed per weekend. There
are 2-3 races per weekend. The teams usually try to save a good set for the
final stint of the last race. They can't make their compulsory stop during a
yellow flag, so they usually stop early to keep from getting caught out by a
full course caution. Sometimes a late pit gamble pays off, but not usually.
But each race seems to have it's own rules. The Bathurst endurance race
didn't seem to have any special rules.
Great racing on mostly good tracks. Although it's been kinda painful to
watch this season as a Ford fan, heheh. I can see now why a certain person
keeps the AV8 crusade alive ;).

I really like the simple/short tracks (except Bathurst). They give lots of
action and they are for the most pretty tight. The track width is very
narrow on almost all of those tracks. There's no Kuala Lumpur there in that
series. The cars jump on the kerbs, drift wide into the tall grass just at
the edge of the track, often the track radius of some corner exit will make
it so that the cars barely round the outside edge of the corners.

Ok, the reason for this is that for some stupid reason they are not allowed
to make their compulsory tire change under yellow flags. This means that if
you take your pit stop as early as possible, then if there is a yellow flag
(which is highly likely seeing as these guys drive like morons) you can
catch up the 30 seconds or so which you have lost in the pit lane.
Personally I think its a stupid rule.

A better, closer comparision would be to view the Aussie Supercars vs the

think from just casual viewing the Trans Am cars may have a-bit more Aero
bodywork. But the Aussies, at least at Bathurst, seem to have a little
more top-end. It would be great fun to see a Rocketsports Jaguar run
Bathurst with the Supercars.

From what I have seen the power to weight ratio is about the same between
the Cup cars and Aussie V8s. I would tend to agree that the Trans Am cars
without the aero body work would be a lot closer overall performance wise.

Hey, dont know which Opel Omega you know, but our Omega does look very
good. Just dont order an Omega with the standard wheels, that really
doesnt look good. Go for the 17" with sporty tires and youll get an great
car. But I agree, the Omega in Holden Commodore-Style does look way better,
but the Omega offers much more technical features only missing a V8.

The only real bright sport
was the 351 C. I'll just take mine in a 73 Grand Sport Torino. Still
kicking myself over that one. :( The 70 MACh 1s are my favorite with the
Boss 429 and Boss 302 runner ups. I'd love to get my hands on one of the new
MAChs as well.

So I take it that rule was just for Surfer's then? I have watched alot of
the races lately and I don't remember any curb rules, but I missed the
Surfer's race.

I saw the race at Surfers in TV and they attacked the curbs like hell.
Couldnt see any rules there.

Yep. If it's a $35,000 Mustang, then it wasn't worth the effort.

I didn't like the direction they had taken anyway.
I had an '87 Trans Am GTA back when I was in the Navy. Even did a little
stadium racing with it (I think it was the SCCA that sponsored it). THAT
was the type of F-Body FireBird I liked, not the rounded off, bug-eyed thing
that it became. I just wish back then the 350 (5.7 Litre) had more umph.
The '87 GTA was the first year for it.
The racing at the Stadium in San Diego was fun. All that was required was a
Helmet, a second throttle-return spring and your entry fee :)

I cringe when I think of what that car is worth today, espeically since it
was one of the VERY rare specimines that had factory 4-piston front disc
brakes. I was told at a later date that only 252 '67's shipped with that
option package.
I must go cry now :(

Apparantly, by Aussie V8 Rule standards, it means allowing the rubber of
your tire to touch the curb in any way, shape or form.
And apparantly it also depends on which driver and team you are...
They were completely inconsistent in who and how they were busting during
that race.

It was the first of two races they aired. I believe it was round 11. The
second race, whatever it is, is on the UTV and I'll get around to it
eventually.
I swear, I thought they were gonna set up a police check-point at one time
:)

Ive seen every race of the 2002-season, but cant remember that. Seems that
the broadcasting channel Motors TV has cut those scenes.

Thanks for the info.
Those rules are really nonsens. Too many rules can destroy racing,
especially if you cant control them properly as it is in this case.

Did I ever tell you guys that my father worked at the local Ford plant in

Well, as the plant was going to close down (after General Velasco's
takeover and 'nationalization' of several companies), they were offering
the employees the Mustangs at a discounted price. And my father didn't
buy one because he didn't like that car, he thought 'the engine was too
powerful for that body'. He should have never told me the story, when I
found out several years later you can guess what my reaction was.
Damn, he likes cars that look 'classy', he bought a new Citroen GSA
Club back in 1982 and the car broke down and has been in the garage for
the past 10-15 years...

had a guy that wanted to trade me a 73 Grand Sport with 21,000 original

line. He even had the original tires! I didn't go for it because I thought
I was gonna stay in the drag racing thing for a while longer and didn't want
to waste the Torino on that. Well now I have bought a house and decided to
get out of the drag racing (damn games have spoiled me) and a nice mint
condition classic would have been real nice for my new garage. :(

I saw a very interesting article back when the Mustangs made the big change
in 94. They backed out the cost of the government required emissions and
safety equipment. Then took that price and figured the inflation rates from
64 to 94 and guess what they found. The 94 was actually cheaper than the
64. It was pretty eye opening.

I saw one, New Zeeland I think, where one car knocked the tire stack off one
of the corners. Everyone started blowing left front tires after that. They
ended up finding that there was a spike used to hold down those tires that
was sticking up and puncturing the tires. They took a sledge hammer and
knocked it out so they couldn't be too worried about curb hopping.
