GP Legends - with BRM

How much slower is the BRM in GPL?

A fan of the BRM asked how much slower it is than the Lotus, Eagle and Ferrari in GPL. Answers ranged from a few tenths for good drivers to several seconds for others, with fast tracks like Spa and Monza suiting it best. The thread became advice for EldredP on setups and confidence.

Which kind of lap times you would expect to get when driving with BRM. How many seconds slower/lap? (Compared to best cars: Lotus, Eagle, Ferrari) At Kyalami? At Monaco? (this seems really hard). ... .. . Is there any track in which BRM would at least be competive against above mentioned top three? (I just like BRM...) .mikko -- /* reality is an illusion that occurs due to the lack of alcohol */

At most tracks brm is about 1-2 sec slower than lotus and about 10 sec slower at nurburgring. The best tracks for brm are those that are quite fast like spa and monza. dan "Mikko mml" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:yb60a.169$[email hidden]...

Depends how good you are in the other cars! But in general it's a couple of seconds slower. But all the cars are fast if you know how to drive them. A guy in our league is very fast in the BRM. My monza pb is 1.28.41 and my BRM pb is a 1.29.8x but that was a real thrash of a lap. Kev

In *my* hands, the BRM is at least 3-4 seconds slower at most tracks than my fastest car. Kyalami Lotus 1:21.05 BRM 1:24.69 Monaco Lotus 1:29.84 BRM 1:33.76 Spa Lotus 3:20.08 BRM 3:27.73(blech) I'm actually faster in the Cooper at all those tracks... In the hands of a GOOD driver, the difference is usually only 3-4 tenths. I still feel that the only reason for anyone to drive the POS known as the BRM is to work on a MonsterRank...<g> Eldred -- Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank:-0.381 N2002 Rank:+17.59 Never argue with an idiot. I think the only reason I'm faster in the Cooper at so many track is that I drive it more. I'm in a loague where I drive it exclusively. If I had more seat time in the BRM, I *might* drag it close to my other times. Won't happen though - I absolutely *hate* that car... <snip> Pretty much anything is competitive at the Ring if you can keep it out of the hedges... my PB there is 17 seconds slower in the BRM than the Lotus (8:37 to 8:20), but that's not as much as it seems because of the aforementioned hedge problems! As for being competitive, it obviously depends on your opposition (duh), but I can keep up with at least some of the pack at Spa (3:26) and the Glen (1:07). Otherwise I'd rather drive the Cooper, to be honest. -- Above address *is* valid - but snip spamtrap to get me to *read*!

But I can't really do anything about it now, can I? I have a lot of admiration for guys that can get that POS around the track so quickly. I race guys like Paul Godfrey, Paul Jackson, Keith Alsop, Peter Burke, and Alex Tihkonov(sp?). I've seen ALL those guys dominate in the BRM before. I just don't get it... EldredP wrote: >Alsop, Peter Burke, and Alex Tihkonov(sp?). I've seen ALL those guys dominate > in the BRM before. I just don't get it... My guess is, from watching the replays, aliens and other good drivers 'commit' to the corner more - they dare go in faster and slide it harder. Also, their shifting and wheelspin control is probably more precise. I suspect the BRM, given its power handicap, needs to be slung into the corners way faster than we'd ever dare to, in order to keep up the speed... (But hey, us slowpokes still remember the days when we just couldn't break 1:30 no matter WHAT or WHICH car we tried, so it could even be worse ;) Regards, Ruud

If you have done it with those cars there is no real reason why you shouldn't also be able to do it with the Eagle (easily as fast as the Lotus), the Brabham, and the Honda (both of which are nearly as fast as the Ferrari). I find at most tracks I like the somewhat slower response of the Eagle, I get in less trouble that way. But at Monza it is enough faster on the straights to make up for its difficulties in the slower corners. Actually the only corners in which it feels uncomfortable to me is in the Lesmos. It powers out of the Parabolica quite nicely. Seems like most people would agree with you about the Brabham, but for some reason that just hasn't been my experience. I do think the default setups for the Brabham are part of the problem. The spring rates are too high for such a light car, especially the rear springs. And with such a short wheelbase it really needs to have the steering ratio about half a notch higher than the others. I find it to be quite comfortable once I fix the setup. The Honda, when properly set up, seems to be capable of the same speeds on the straights as the Ferrari and Brabham. But here again the defaults suck. The whole front end is just wrong in the defaults, and the gearing is also off in some of them. The Honda's front end needs to be about the same as any other car in the game, it's the fat ass that needs special attention in the setup. The rear needs heavier springs, and heavier rebound damping, and because of the extra weight on the rear axle it wants more diff lock than the other cars (except its fat sister, the BRM). Honestly the car is quite comfortable and fast when set up right. "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Just balance your tyre temps first (with the camber), then see how the car feels. If it's too twitchy, try lowering the springs, or shocks, or something else. Try it, one step at a time, and see what feels better and what feels worse. Keep the better stuff and change something else. It does require a small amount of knowledge about what to expect from a change, but mostly it's just experience. If you drive round the track and find that you regularly need to change up a gear just before braking for the next corner, try raising that gear a notch, and try another lap or two. Keep doing that & you'll have the car set up to suit your driving style, and it'll be easier to keep it on the road. As long as you save the setup with a different name to the ones you normally use, you can't lose your original setup. I also think it's time to accept that you're actually pretty quick ;-) Malc.

That's just it. Every change makes the car WORSE. I have yet to make a change in GPL and actually have it work better than the original.

I'm still back of the grid on all except one league. Actually, I'm slow there too, but I make up spots as people crash. You just seem to want to compete with driver much faster than you. Malc.

I'm definitely no hotlapper with my mid-1:29 but after slapping a Huttu setup (which was stable on the Lotus as well) onto the Eagle I was able to turn 1:29s more regularly and without the *really really* trying-mindset, and it is pretty stable, so there may be something in there. 'Specially since the Bird is a tad faster on the straights and a smidgen more forgiving than the Lotus. Regards, Ruud

Eldred isn't all that slow, he is not, he just still thinks he is (hey, a lot of people in the world haven't gone negative, you know). Besides, in a race it isn't about how fast you are anyway (basically), it's about finishing in a good position. You can be faster-than-Huttu but if you do not cross that line in the end, it matters naught. It's a different skill set, where tactics and restraint matter more. Regards, Ruud
