Idea about RASCAR "problem"

29 posts by 11 people · 13 Feb 2003 09:36 UTC - 14 Feb 2003 21:49 UTC

Compromise proposals for RASCAR newsgroup traffic

Txl suggested RASCAR keep announcements on RAS but move organisational posts to its own forum, as other leagues did. Supporters argued RASCAR was an RAS community activity rather than a normal league and that filtering was easy, while critics said it deserved no special treatment. David G Fisher said a RASCAR web forum was being set up.

Hello For once I'm going to be the "moderate guy here", I'll bitch about US and Irak some other time, ha ha ha. Of course RASCAR "news" have a right to be there because it's RAScar league. Of course "non RASCAR" people have a right not to be buggered by a LOT of posts which have NOTHING to do with simulation. So here's the idea : Send some UN troops in irak (no shit, that's not for this problem...) RASCAR people (or admin or moderators or call them whatever you want) SHOULD post here about IMPORTANT stuff such as Race schedule Tech problems (new ATI drivers and so on) RASCAR people SHOULD NOT post here about UNIMPORTANT (to the others) stuff such as Race results (frankly even in the end it was becoming tedious to get 25 post about the results of Eldred's last online GPL race from the sunday) Race comments, posts like "hey you txl bastard you pushed me in the last corner..." frankly besides the guy that pushed and the guy that was pushed, who gives a shit ? why not take this problem "privately" by email ? Let's keep this in perspective, the occasional post about "how great was my last lap when I passed 5 people..." is OK but do you realize that if RASCAR people post all about their settings, race results, race comment and so on then it means that EVERYBODY racing on VROC is entitled to explain to us the race he had, bitch about the occasional "backwards driver" and so on, it's been done of course, but nowhere near the proportions that RASCAR is going right now. Another advice to John Simmons, I don't think it is a fantastic idea to adress people individually in the NG, if you need to contact Don Wilshe or whoever then mail them directly, of course I assume that all the RASCARers have provided a valid email adress when registering to the league so why do it there ?. Now you can all bash me as much as you want but I think that a little more respect from everybody towards everybody shouldn't harm things here... Very reasonable suggestions Txl. However, since the results of this dicussion will affect me as a non-RASCARer as well, I'd like to say while I find John's sending individual posts like 5 in a row about the same issue a bit boisterous, I at the same time enjoy reading race reports or discussions about races and settings/setups. Sometimes for technical reasons as the findings are interesting for me as well, and sometimes for the purely social value of reading about what happened to the people I'm in contact with all the time. I have 'known' all the regulars here for several years now, and while my interest in some is more profound than in others, I find all the stories interesting and read them with pleasure when I have the time. And if they're boring, I simply skip them. I wouldn't want to miss any of them, especially not at the risk of missing something interesting as well. As for John's spilling RASCAR postings all over the place instead of being a bit more economical with his postings - I didn't mind his postings either, since it is after all no problem to simply not read them when they're not for you, which I have done with all the stuff addressed by name to other individuals and most other postings labelled RASCAR with a topic I didn't find interesting be. I just don't open messages that are clearly related to the RASCAR league orginaisation, and luckily John's labelling his postings clearly, so it's no prob at all to simply skip them. I'd like to keep all the RASCAR postings in here. I'd rather have to skip a couple of organisational bla-bla than lose some interesting findings or reports, or even entertaining arguments about race situations ;-) This is also no criticism of Schooner and others sharing his opinion, I just think that maybe we should be relaxed about these issues and just skip stuff we're not interested in, as else we might be losing interesting information as well. Joachim Trensz wrote: > > This is also no criticism of Schooner and others sharing his opinion, I just > think that maybe we should be relaxed about these issues and just skip stuff > we're not interested in, as else we might be losing interesting information > as well. Yep, I don't race with the RASCAR guys either, wish I had the time, but as long as they clearly mark it as RASCAR it's easy to set up a filter for it for those that *really* don't want to see it Personally I think that if we cut out everything in here that was slightly OT, it would quickly become a very boring place, the variety of the postings in here combined with the fact that we manage to stay somewhat on the topic of racing, computers or preferably the combination of the two is what makes this NG come alive It's not boring and it's usually not a flame fest, on the whole I'd say we're doing pretty good Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

well, I don't read them, but look at it this way, if EVERYBODY running a league does the same then we have 500 new posts per day and let's say 450 are of no interest to 95% of the people here...and frankly why would the people running the "CROATIAN GPL F3 LEAGUE" have a lesser right to post about their roster, rules, race summaries and so on. When you do something as specialised as RASCAR of course you use the NG to give out GENERAL information but you create a DEDICATED board for your INTERNAL stuff...and frankly the fact that John Doe has not yet given his Sierra ID is of NO interest except to John Doe, so mail him and don't post it here...no ? RASCAR is not a true league. It's a way for people from r.a.s. to get together and race. Simple as that. We are using N2003 because it has the best online code, but any sim that has good online code could be used in the future. There are no points, or a championship to be won. No prizes. No bragging rights, sponsorship, etc. R.a.s. is about auto simulators, and supposedly the people who frequent this newsgroup are very serious and enthusiastic about auto sims. Online racing is a key ingredient that most of us hope will be included in all auto sims in the near future. It only makes sense then that we should get together and race each other, and then discuss those races here at r.a.s. David G Fisher

This was never a Papy Nascar sim only league IMO. Indeed there were RAS passworded LFS races as I recall which all come under the same umbrella. Like a motor club with various events to discuss and organise (and gossip about) The registration and roster bit adds some degree of scope for keeping out wreckers who stumble across ras, and to feed John's obsession for painting cars and car numbers. Cheers Tony

Don't you think it would be a good idea to do it the "gpl rally" way ? They have set up a special forum just for that, they come here, annouce "season is open" and then give you the link to their forum... I think it's much better for everybody, the people looking for "RASCAR specific stuff" go to this forum and in the NG the topics are more "general" which of course does not prevent AT ALL John and the other RASCAR guys to mention new stuff, dates, deadlines and so on, but why develop them here instead of doing this in a nice forum where you could have screenshots, setups, tweaks....

Isn't that GPL Rally just a one time thing? I don't know anything about it. I think Ed Solheim is setting up a RASCAR page with a forum that is going to be ready any day now. Then just the general stuff will be posted here like you suggest. RASCAR posts only bothered people for a bit last year when it was first being organized too. After that, the posts weren't that often at all. As has been said many times, if people just used their filter then this isn't an issue. I used to see posts all the time about GPL races (and league races) that I had no interest in but I just didn't read them. Sometimes I did. I didn't complain about them though. David G Fisher

I don't want to filter because sometimes there are interesting post with RASCAR or from the admins, but I'd rather not have EVERYTHING we've been having lately. Now if they are fixing a web page soon then it's perfect and surely problems like that won't happen again, and I hope you guys beat the crap out of each other racing those ovals !!!

Right, but the other leagues aren't the officially sanctioned stock car league of rec.autos.simulators. So, really, even tho I have no interest in reading most of those threads, they're still on topic. =) Jason

Like a motor club with various events to discuss and organise(and > gossip about) Yes, I hosted an ras server for LFS the week after the demo was first released. There were a couple of others too. If a sim has good online play then people here at ras could do the same thing we're doing with N2003. David G Fisher
