Flame warRASCAR dispute turns into insult exchange

GMpartsguy argued that RAS traffic was normal and the RASCAR complaints were overblown, which drew grumbles about reviving the argument and a side chat about newsreaders. Gerry Aitken and redTed then traded escalating insults, some computer-generated, over whether redTed had opposed RASCAR posts.

I run this newsgroup through IE and a broadband account. Looking back about a month, im seeing about 10 to 20 new posts a day on average. This is including the recently fired up R*SC*R posts. Comparing this to the other 8 or 10 NG's i use as well, this is a fairly average number (on average :)). Very rarely in the 3 years or so i have been lurking around here, have i seen anyone do a mass posting like was done yesterday. It wasnt meant to disrupt or trash the room. It was meant to grab the attention of a group of semi-casual racers for the purpose of organization. Seeing how ive watched the R*SC*R group sprout up on R.A.S, the point of the posts being off topic or inappropriate is without merit. I place this argument in the same box with the replies to common questions posted as "why dont you search google before you come here". Maybe im all fucked up inside, but i have always considered newsgroups to be basically one thing; a group of people dedicated to the same interests that share knowledge and help each other without question. Sure, some do this task more cheerfully than others, but thats thats life. Tolerance.. How hard is it to deal with life a little. In the past 24, i have seen people foam up at the smallest details. Even arguing about top posting and every other thing. Shamefull. It truly is the poor musician who blames his instrument. Everyone out here is capable of sifting what they see. If the RCAR thing aint yer thing, wash it out. One world. One R.A.S.. Or some campy bullshit like that :). Phew, i need a beer. Thanks fer listening..
Thanks for throwing some fuel on the fire. Hoping to see some big explosions were we? Most of us had finally given up beating our heads against the wall and implemented a filter and now someone decides to use R*SC*R in the heading. Nice work.
Don't worry about Schooner kicking up a stink. He's a fellow Hallogonian! It's in our blood. HFX.Forsale and HFX.general are prime examples! ;-) Just kiddn' Schooner! PS - We've got the best BEER! Jason, What is non-RFC compliant mean and what newsreaders are RFC compliant? What do you recommend as a newsreader. I do use Outlook Express and don't think it's that great (although I don't think it doesn't thread my posts properly). TIA. -- Joe M.

RE: Agent... Oh, man do I agree with you. I can barely forgive myself for paying for that POS a few years ago. It's the most convoluted, confusing, pain-in-the-ass to use newsreader I've ever seen. Features have been 'tacked onto the end' for years. Nothing has ever been re-organized to turn it into a efficient, logical interface. It has so many different preference and option panes, scattered heavens knows where, that you can't find shit when you need it. And to this day (up to version 1.8) it STILL can't sort by subject and group by thread at the same time. I don't even think I have my serial number any more. I like it for reading/posting news but really that's not the point I was making. My disdain for OE isn't the interface or ease of use or any of that, it's the way it includes features that make no sense at all. I hate Microsoft's "everything is HTTP" philosophy which is basically done for no reason other than making the products that they push on the MS-dependent incompatible with the vast majority of their competitor's products that actually follow the spirit of standardization. Instead of working within the system that had been created in order to nurture and sustain the Internet itself, Microsoft says "screw you guys, we've got market share from the illegal business practices we've been using, so if something doesn't work in our software or only works in our software then the rest of the world should change to adopt to that. Besides, our software lets you sent pretty HTML email and usenet messages to your grandma, who cares if they don't comply to the RFC's that define SMTP and NNTP." While I'm ranting about Microsoft, I'd also like to note their failure to include real force feedback in the Xbox. Those bastards. Jason

You said 'ditto' and agreed with everything redmist said. He said he'd given up beating his head against the wall (trying to argue that RASCAR posts don't belong in RAS, which was his stance on the subject) and had implemented a filter. What part of his post were you agreeing with when you dittoed it? Just a part of it or all of it? If you are going to agree with someone's post you might like to read what they have written before doing so!

I replied directly to this post...not any others that he(redmist) may have made. "Thanks for throwing some fuel on the fire. Hoping to see some big explosions were we? Most of us had finally given up beating our heads against the wall and implemented a filter and now someone decides to use R*SC*R in the heading. Nice work" So for the simpletons in the class, that means I dittoed his view that after putting a filter in place to block any more RASCAR posts appearing in MY newsreader, someone uses "R*SC*R" to deliberately circumvent those of us who had filtered the subject. Next reply to you will be in crayon.

So if you weren't agreeing with the, "Most of us had finally given up beating our heads against the wall...", why did you include it in your post? > Next reply to you will be in crayon. That would have to be in HTML, which is not allowed in this newsgroup! BTW, I find this trip through your mind as illuminating as a 3 watt bulb! <PLONK>
