OT: What sound card do you use for your sims

Best sound card for racing sims

Igor asked for sound card recommendations. Many avoided Creative cards because of driver problems, especially GPL crackling under Windows XP, and recommended the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or Hercules cards, while others praised nForce2 onboard sound. The thread drifted into memories of first sound cards and Amiga and Atari machines.

I had a SB Live X-Game 1.5 that left a lot to be desired. The static was more then I could bare. I've since switched to the onboard sound on my Asus A7V333 motherboard, and it's static free. Music sounds better too! And, the best part about the TB/SC card is that I got to uninstall all the crap that Creative put on my hard drives! Unlike Doug, I never had any problems with Creative (AWE 32, 128 PCI, Live Value) until I went to WinXP where my Live and GPL *WOULD NOT* co-operate. I tried *ALL* suggestions. I gave up on Creative and went with a Hercules Fortissimo III. A whole new world of frustration was opened up. The sound in GPL was improved but not fully rectified, but worse it introduced real nasty GPL stutters. Tried everything I could think of - switching between PCI slots, drivers, accelleration, etc, etc, to no avail. Tried on-board sound which worked for GPL but was just a mess with N2K2. I went back to Creative and bought an Audigy 2 and I'm glad I did... I woulda tried a turtle beach SC as people rave about them around here but couldn't find one. Is it a US only product? Anyway, that's my experience. Your Mileage, as they say, May Vary. Regards, Mark

Anything, but Creative. And that goes double if you have a Geforce video card. I run the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card on one machine, and a Phillips AE (706) on another. They both are great cards, but Phillips has poor driver support. After reading about the Nforce2 sound I may have to try that too. :) MadDAWG

"MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > How much of a "draw" is put on the cpu? I typical don't use any onboard > devices because they leach cycles from the cpu.A PCI sound card also leaches cycles from the CPU. Dont be under the impression that just because it's soldered on to the motherboard means it doesnt fundamentally work 'the same' as far as I can remember ( and you'll ahve to look back thru HardOCP.com reviews I think) - using Quake 3 FPS ( at 640 x 480 so it's cpu limited) with sound off, and then on - the Audigy 2 was a few percent MORE of a hit than the nForce 2 ( yeah - I went "wtf? - you're kidding me - onboard sound better than a PCI card - nahhhh" - but it's true - if I can find the reviews I'll post here) Hell yeah - the nForce 1 was a dog. The nForce 2 is the very best ( and possibly last ) socket A solution there is Dog
Well it don't surprise me that its better than a Creative card lol Once I get my computers hooked back up I'll have to give it a try. What the hell its not like I gotta by anything. MadDAWG

If ya want all that Larry mentions and a little better sound at a higher price then go with the Audigy2. I never had any problems with the Santa Cruz though and can recommend it for the price. If quality sound is what you want then the Audigy 2 has an edge. Im no audiophile by any stretch but I can tell a difference for both MP3's and games. In NR2003 I run all sounds including 3d and get no noticeable FPS hit. You can really pickup the small ambient sounds while still getting the full roar of the engine. I don't run any old software so I cant comment on whether GPL/F4 will work. I paid $99 after a rebate and would say it's well worth $20 more than the SC, although I got my SC for $49 almost a year ago. Yeah yeah I know all about creative and there piss poor driver updates (had em all since the original 8bit) but the Audigy 2 was designed for XP and XP will be around till 05' so I feel pretty safe as far as compatibility for at least 3 years. When longhorn ships my advice will be to wait on any Creative purchases ;)) Mitch "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Ltu4a.33284$[email hidden]... > Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. > > Solid hardware, solid drivers, NO PCI ISSUES!, and it plays nice withother

Same here: TBSC. Best sound card I've ever used. Low cpu utilization, excellent stability, compatible with everything and sounds GREAT. BTW, anyone remember buying their first sound card? I remember using the built-in PC speaker (playing Wing Commander IIRC) until a guy at a computer game store about 13 years ago convinced me that a sound card makes a big difference. So I ran out and bought a sound blaster 16 (?) and slapped it in my 286 12 Mhz speed demon. It's amazing how far we've come. -- Joe M. I was suprised that the PC NEEDED a soundcard. I came from the Amiga school which had built in 4 channel sound. First card was a SB Pro...boy did it feel dumb buying something that was included in my old system. Wing Commander was the title that pushed me over to the PC world. About a year after it was released for the PC, they finally ported it over to the Amiga. they made NO attempt to optimize it, or adjust the color. Just a quick and dirty port..like almost all PC ports for the AMiga, it ran like a dead PIG. There was a wargame that included armour, jets, hovercraft, helicopters..nothing fancy in the graphics arena but the framerate was amazing. If you didn't find and shoot the oncomming jet it would zoom past before you could even recognize it...Then loaded the next great thing from the PC crowd and INSTANT SLIDE show...ah them were da days.. dave henrie

GPL issues are easy to overcome, but with Hitman 2 it's either no music (which is pretty essential in this game, IMO), or no hardware acceleration (hit on fps and no 3D sounds). Other than that, it's a great card. Couldn't notice any difference in sound quality when compared to SB Live 5.1 though, but that's probably due to my poor monitor speakers (Nokia 447XPro)... but I did get rid of the stuttering in GPL when I ditched the SB card =) -- - JKo -
