Opinions on the 2004 Pontiac GTO

A poster pointed out that Pontiac would sell a Holden Monaro-based GTO in the US. Opinions split over its styling, with Larry objecting that it was too expensive to deserve the GTO name. The thread drifted into nostalgia about old GM and Ford muscle cars.

I know this is off topic, but just in case anyone has missed it. Take a look at the "new" GTO. Pontiac will be importing a honest to goodness V8-Supercar for the American market. The car is based on the Monaro (I think, perhaps an Australian car clarify it for me...). If you are a fan of the V8 supercars, and thanks to SpeedTV more of us Americans have the chance to become Supercar fans, this is just amazing news. Since we can't import a "real" supercar into the states, I have tried, I can't wait to get one of these. www.pontiac.com has a flash presentation if you haven't seen this car yet. Let's hope they switch the IROC series to these cars for next year. That with some new tracks would make that an awesome series.

I love the 2005 Mustang concept. Although I haven't seen the interior of the GTO... it is a Pontiac so it will most likely be made of cheap feeling plastic, bad color lighting and legos. <G> -- Scott B. I have always been a fan of camaro's but especially late model camaros with the ls1 engine. After they "discontinued" it 2002, I was wondering what they down at GM were gonna put that baaadddd motor in besides the corvette. Now I cant wait to see what kinda time and top speed this thing will have with a supercharger. here's a link to a f.i. ls1 gettin up and going. http://www.ls1motorsports.com/home.asp makes me shiver. can't wait for some gto forums to start popping up. that shot from the back looks a lot like a toned down mustang with a ls1 in it. toned down body styling that is. "jwilson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:WNw4a.169523$[email hidden]...

Holden is who makes the original RWD Aussie version of the new Grand Prix. They use the tried and true 5.7L engine. As a side note, they also still build the El Camino. Its called a Ute i believe (looks nice too) and of course is available with a 350.

I wish they would have used a different name. It doesn't stand for what the GTO used to stand for. Yeah, it has power. Have to give it that. But it's EXPENSIVE, which right away takes it out of the reach of the type of person that would have bought a GTO. It's also limited edition. And, frankly, I don't like the body style. I'd spend twice as much for a 10-point 1967 GTO survivor car long before I'd buy one of these. I used to buy & restore GTO's in my younger days as a Mechanic. It's in my blood, and I'll be damned hard to please with anything built today, especially something like this that does not capture the true essence of the original in any way except power. Except for the Eldorado ETC. That is one fine looking set of wheels. I've come SO close to being able to afford to lease one, or a year old one, but every damned time I get close they crank up the price and I can't get there. DAMMIT! 1987 was the absolute last year I could tolerate anything from GM Car wise. 1988 was when they went to the corporate-platform and the "Bug-Eyed" look as well as all front wheel drive. I've had a ton of Pontiac's in my day. A 65 Lemans, 65 GTO, 66 GTO and two 67 GTO's. A 74 Grand Prix. A 76 Grand Prix and an 81 Grand Prix. Then on to a 96 Firebird, which was traded in on a 350cid V8 87 GTA Trans Am (first year of the return of the 350). The GTA was the last one I owned. To me, everything went to crap in 1988. The 'Birds were ok until around 93 (?) I guess when they went to the new roundy body style which I could not stand. Larry "Brad Larocque" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

The 2000 and up Taurus is not a bad looking car. I just traded one in end-of-lease. The 96 through 99 models were god-awful ugly. -Larry "Jason Moyer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I like flat. I actually dislike the current-day 'aero' look of cars. That's why the Cadillac Eldorado ETC is one of the last good-looking American cars to me. It still has hints of the past in it with it's broad rear shoulders and flat-sides and long, low hood. -Larry "ThrashATL" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:b2u723$88t$[email hidden]... > > "jwilson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:LYw4a.165463$[email hidden]... > > And if you really want to see something neat go to www.ford.com and lookat

Back in the 70's, I worked on a car called a "Beaumont" once. It was the weirdest damned thing any of us had ever seen. It was 1/2 Chevelle, and 1/2 Lemans. The body of the Chevelle and the interior of a Lemans! We later learned it was brought over from Austrailia. I recently saw another one on a Speed TV show called My Classic Car. It was the same weird car. Kind of cool though :) Beautiful shade of blue. In article <S295a.44898$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] says... > The GTA was the last one I owned. To me, everything went to crap in 1988. > Yep. Not coincidentally this was the year that GM killed the Buick Grand National/T-Type and they haven't produced a good 4-seat musclecar since. I bought a '98 Pontiac Formula which had serious power but two kids later, I've had to move to a "family" car, which kills me, although I do like my Chrysler 300M. The GTO looks like it might be a good solution for my next vehicle although I would really love a BMW M3 -- 333 horsepower and unmatched handling in a sinister looking package like that (I'll take mine in black please) just can't be beat. Of course I don't know if my wife would go for the payment on a $50,000 car ;-) -- __________________________ Todd Walker http://twalker.d2g.com __________________________
I was going to mention that too :) The Grand National was THE last true muscle car of it's kind. The Eldorado ETC comes close to the definition (thought the FWD would have to go), but the GNX was hot shit man.
