Stopping Windows Messenger service spam pop-ups

Milo Johnson asked how to stop spam pop-ups from the Messenger service that appeared mid-race. Doug Olsen explained disabling the Windows Messenger service in Administrative Tools, which worked, and others clarified it was unrelated to MSN Messenger and recommended firewalls and Spybot.

For the last month I have had popups on my computer from something called messenger service. Stuff like college degree for cash, enlarge your penis ECT. Have tried everything I know to get rid of it but no luck. This thing will pop up in the middle of the screen during a race and you wreck sure as hell. Anyone else had this thing? If so could you get rid of it and if so how? I went into my registry, deleted stuff from taskmanager and I am at my wits end. Any help appreciated. Thank you MILO

Log into windows as a user with admin privileges, then go to start->control panel->administrative tools->services. Find "Messenger" in the list, double-click it, then change the "startup type" to "disabled" in the dialog box which pops up. This is under NT2K. XP might be slightly different, but should hopefully be similar. HTH, Doug "Milo Johnson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:i1E4a.156512$SD6.8365@sccrnsc03...

This method can be used in XP too. Doug Olsen wrote:

Not going to help him, I think. It is spammers taking advantage of a Windows messaging service that network administrators use to send messages to users on the network. You're right. It's also usefull to get a wider view on the Messenger issue, because disabling it can cause other problems, like slowing down Outlook Express's startup. I had the same problem in XP Pro. As stated, disable the Messenger item in Admin Tools -> Services (You may have to add Admin Tools to your Start List to do so. The XP Help and support will tell you how)... or install a firewall and block them out( always a good idea, but it'll rob some performance) . Doug is spot on. Pop up ad blockers wont work as it uses the windows messenging service - this is not to be confused with ms "instant messenger". Both are 2 diff. things. Disabling/deleting one will not affect the other.

Great, I'm all for efficient programs, I hate unnecessary shit! Talking of which: maybe you could reduce the size of your sig, and delete all unnecessary text from your posts?
although I agree AdAware is not the answer, FWIW, AdAware is not a pop-up blocker, but is a spyware removal utility. More and more "freeware" is loaded with this crap, and AdAware goes through and cleans up most spyware that gets installed. hth, jeff > Doug is spot on. There is supposed to be a better one called "Spybot Search and Destroy", according to PC World, but I haven't tried it yet. On their test, it found 26 items compared to 9 for Ad-Aware. -pw >> Doug is spot on. thx. i looked at it, and from their FAQ: "These are send using the Messenger service integrated into Windows 2000 and XP (try the 'net send' command to see for yourself). To disable the Messenger service, go to Start --> All Programs --> Administrative Tools --> Component Services. In Component Services, click on Services (Local), then on the right side, find Messenger and disable it. Note: not everyone will have Administrative Tools in the Start menu. You need to make it visible under Taskbar and Start Menu Properties (right-click on taskbar --> Properties). The surest way to get to Component Services is to enter %systemroot%\system32\com\comexp.msc into the command line." which also answers the posters original question. later, jeff

These are coming in via the Windows Messaging service. This is the latest abuse by the scumbag spammers of the world. This is NOT the same as Windows Messenger. The Windows Messenging service handles inter-computer network communications. Basically, somehow they got your IP address and they are using the NET SEND command (Syntax: NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message) to send you these messages. I believe the most common cure is to stop the Windows Messaging service and set it's startup to manual. Larry There are procedures to disable it, and unless you are on a corporate network it should not affect you. "Milo Johnson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:i1E4a.156512$SD6.8365@sccrnsc03...
