Todd Wasson's drag racing simulator pirated

Hobby developer Todd Wasson said his Straightline Acceleration Simulator had appeared on a warez site within a day of a sale. Others sympathised and suggested contacting hosts, while one poster said $39.95 was too much for a small download, which Todd answered by comparing it with pricier commercial tools. An abuse report got one forum link removed.

Grrr.... The last person that bought a copy of my Straightline Acceleration Simulator was kind enough to post a Warez version on a Chinese website. Now I know how it feels from the other side. It was just a matter of time, I guess. This really p*sses me off!! I'd like to take this opportuntity to say, please do not download Warez versions of software! Any tips on how to proceed? I'd love to nail somebody to the wall for this one :-) Todd Wasson --- Performance Simulations Drag Racing and Top Speed Prediction Software http://PerformanceSimulations.Com My little car sim screenshots: http://performancesimulations.com/scnshot4.htm

My guess would be to contact the company who is hosting the download and try to get it removed ASAP. Stuff like that usually violates TOS. If you're looking to be evil (like me :) then you can also send the customer a notice, legal threat, stern words, or whatever you want to call it. If you're out for real blood, ahem I mean money, then you should contact a lawyer to see what your options are. -Will
If its on a Chinese site, you havent got a hope in hell of getting anything done. Its a waste of time trying to do anything. -- __________ Steve "William Bradshaw" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > "J. If this person live in Europe/EU or the US, you can always contact a lawyer and start legal proceedings You can also contact the server owner and ask them to kindly remove your program from their server, however if it's a Chinese server I wouldn't ge my hopes up, start with a very friendly mail though, there really not too much you can do to hurt them if they're in China, and they know this, so if you piss them off they're not likely to comply Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

It showed up within 24 hours of this person's purchase (and I don't get very many sales, quite frankly, so it's not too tough to come to a reasonable conclusion there), but I don't know that I can prove it just yet. >If this person live in Europe/EU or the US, you can always contact a >lawyer and start legal proceedings > It was a high school kid, so that might be a fruitless thing to do. >You can also contact the server owner and ask them to kindly remove your >program from their server, however if it's a Chinese server I wouldn't >ge my hopes up, start with a very friendly mail though, there really not >too much you can do to hurt them if they're in China, and they know >this, so if you piss them off they're not likely to comply My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately, I already sent a rather demanding letter to the hosting site and a couple of their affiliates. I do have the email address of the guy that posted the links originally and have been writing him. Of course he want me to leave him alone and says he doesn't do such things. Duh.. Funny thing is, I wrote several of these people and this guy claims to have received three emails from me on the subject (I only sent him one), so it looks like a couple of the others I sent got forwarded to him. So I do have a smoking gun, but I'm not sure if it's the original purchaser or not. I rue the day this free link shows up on a simple Google search. My $39.95 program does everything this one does: http://quarterjr.com/quarter_pro.htm Price? $265. Actually, mine does quite a bit more because it's got an engine simulation built in to it that could easily cost another $200 if it was spruced up a bit :-) Another comparable program sells for $69, so personally, I think I'm offering quite a bargain. Folks can get a disk like you describe for an extra $6 (which still leaves me well under typical prices for this type of program), but so far I've had no takers. They all prefer the cheaper direct download with no package. Why someone would want to wait a few days to get their software is beyond me. On the other hand, there are people that want to pay more just to get the pretty box :-) >450 kb of downloaded "shareware" I'm thinking in the 5 to 10 buck range. Unfortunately, there are quite a few peole still stuck in this frame of mind where file size means something. The fact of the matter is that the compiler I use makes unusually small files, as it doesn't include all the garbage that does not get used at all when compiling with Visual Basic or MSVC++. It's an efficient compiler, so you get really small files. A simple VB or MSVC program that does nothing but open a window and say "HOWDY!" can run over a Megabyte. In my compiler, it's probably about .01Mb, but the program is identical. In fact, to help us out, the creators of the compiler actually included a new keyword in their latest release that you can put at the beginning of your code. I kid you not: #BLOAT This basically takes a whole slew of functions and so forth that your program will never use and adds them into your source code (Visual Basic and MSVC++ style) in order to artificially inflate the file size by a couple of megabytes :-D It's sole purpose is to dupe people that think along the lines you think into believing they're getting more for their money. The reality is all you're getting is a bigger, less efficient file, that now requires a CD instead of one little floppy, or takes longer to download. Perhaps I should try it as an experiment and see if sales increase. That'd really crack me up if it did :-) Downloads take 4 times as long so folks think they're getting something more... Ah well... > $39.95 for a .5 mb piece of software. What a bargain. The 3D car simulator in my bottom link is composed of two files: 0.206mb +0.216mb = 0.416mb Funny that it's actually smaller than the drag racing thing, huh? :-P It comes down to the compiler I'm using, that's it. Compile the same thing in C++ and it'll probably be 5-10 times the size. Of course, it won't be any better, it'll just take up more disk space :-D My source code files are actually larger than the compiled files, oddly enough. If anything, this should increase the value in my mind, not vice versa, since it's saving disk space. Oh well.. BTW., if you find something as powerful for anywhere near the price, regardless of the file size, let me know ;-) Todd Wasson --- Performance Simulations Drag Racing and Top Speed Prediction Software http://PerformanceSimulations.Com My little car sim screenshots: http://performancesimulations.com/scnshot4.htm

You'd be surprised. Back in the early 70's I managed a Radio Shack store. When a new stereo receiver came in I told the salespeople how well it would sell, not by listening to it, but by it's KPD ratio. The higher the KPD ratio, the better it would sell. I was always right. Probably because they didn't want to sound ignorant, nobody ever asked me what it was. Not the salespeople or the customers. After a couple years it got a little out of hand when the salespeople started using it as a sales tool and stating that this receiver has a higher KPD ratio than that one, so I had to put an end to it. The KPD ratio is, of course, Knobs Per Dollar. :-) -- Slot Tweaks & Reviews www.slottweak.com --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
