I've experienced this same problem in GPL with both a Radeon 8500LE and
now a Radeon 9700 Pro. It's a bit hard to describe, but portions of the
track background - treetops in particular - are removed. For example,
at Monza, on the main straight, entire portions of the stands are
missing, tree tops are missing, almost all of the trees on the right
hand side approaching the Curva Grande are gone, etc. I see similar
discrepancies at the Ring and at other tracks, as well.
The strange part about it is that it seems to come out of the blue. One
day the tracks seem normal and the next they look as described above.
So far, the only solution has been to re-install the video drivers.
Could this problem stem from a power supply that's too weak? My present
PSU is 300 Watts, but I'll be upgrading to a 450W PSU by the end of the
week.
Any other possibilities? I'm using the latest Cat3.1 drivers (but this
happened with previous drivers, as well) on an overclocked Athlon
XP2100, Radeon 9700 Pro (also slightly overclocked), 512 megs of PC2100
RAM and Win98SE.
Anybody else experiencing this? I haven't noticed a problem in either
NR2003 or GTR2002 -- just in GPL. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Missing trackside textures in GPL on Radeon cards
BRH reported that trees and stands disappeared in GPL on Radeon 8500 and 9700 Pro cards. Moving the ATI texture preference slider to performance fixed it, and Jon Ferraez blamed Catalyst 3.1 drivers and noted the GPL OpenGL patch was made for Nvidia cards. Gerry Aitken and Joachim Trensz reported excellent GPL frame rates on the 9700, disputing Marc Collins's complaints of poor support.
Automated summary.

A little more info to add.... The previous post was based on using D3D at
1024x768, Detail Slider on Full (2X AA; 4X AF). I'm running the Win98SE
desktop at 1024x768, 32 bit.
Playing around with the settings, I see that if I go back to the track
selection screen, then use 640x480, everything is back to normal. But as
soon as I switch the resolution back to 800x600 or 1024x768 (even with the
Detail Slider on Minimum), the problem appears again.
The videocard exhibits no problems (knock wood) with any other sim, so I'm
really thinking that it might be a (lack of) power problem. Any thoughts?

On my R8500LE the problem is that some of the track side textures are
transparent... I'm using D3D in GPL and Cat 3.1 drivers for WinXP.

Any thoughts?I am experiencing the transparent textures at the side of the track at
Monza, but no where else that I can find so far. Haven't tried the Ring
that was mentioned elsewhere. It is quite bizarre. I am going to try
turning off AA and then start playing with filtering and LOD settings to see
what happens.

And by the way, the frame rates in GPL with this card suck. My GeForce2 GTS
Ultra from 2 years ago was better in either D3D or OpenGL.

Gerry, Unfortunately my monitor will only go to 1280x1024, so I couldn't run
your test. BUT, I THINK that I MAY have stumbled onto a work-around. [This
works at all resolutions on my system].
Go into the ATI Display Properties/Advanced Properties to the D3D tab. Slide
the 'Texture Preference' Slider all the way to the left (to High Performance).
No matter what your other settings are, this one is the key. The problem went
away for me, even though I was still running at 1024x768, with 2XAA and 4XAF, as
long as this slider was all the way to the left. With this slider at any other
setting, the problem came right back (except at 640x480, No AA, No AF). I have
only tested this at Monza, but that's where the problem was most obvious on my
system. It was also evident at the Ring, but I have not tested this solution
there yet.
I hope this helps everyone..... Please try this and report back here....

Interesting. I got 5 times sharper textures in NR2003 by moving the slider
just one notch to the left from Full Quality. Opposite of what you would
expect. I'll try all the way to Performance since I am having the bizarre
Monza problems, too.

That would be your system then, as there are many reports of great
performance with this card in GPL.
Gerry
Really--where? The OpenGL support is so appalling as to not be worth
discussing and D3D frame rates are well below other titles. The hardware is
nice, but support for GPL is poor. Support for OpenGL is poor. And lots of
minor problems with other titles, too. The fact that the card flies in some
titles doesn't mean it works well in GPL.
I can run 100% full everything with my GeForce4 and still have acceptable
(32+) frame rates at the back of a full field online start. Show me a
Radeon anything that can do that--they haven't invented a CPU fast enough to
overcome whatever bottleneck is occurring in the GPL D3D rasterizer.

You seem to have negated the fact that many people at RSC have got the
radeon working really well with GPL. Are you one of the ones who, after
five minutes, reinstalled their Geforce card and started crying about
it?

Actually the ATI Radeon 8500/9700 cards have very good OpenGL support.
The GPL OpenGL patch was designed only for Nvidia cards that is why it
doesn't work on the Radeon. Any other OpenGL game will fly on the
Radeon 8500/9700. Read some of the ATI reviews on anandtech.com and
tomshardware.com to find that out. Saying the Radeon has poor OpenGL
is just not true.. in the case of GPL that is a known fact that the
OpenGL patch was designed only for Nvidia cards.

Transparent textures at the side of the track/screen come from the
Catalyst 3.1 drivers.. that is a issue with the new 3.1 drivers. Go
back to the Catalyst 3.0 or 2.5 drivers and the transparent textures
on the side of the track/screen will go away.

To me, pending a new driver update that fixes EVERYTHING, it's a relatively simple matter to move the Texture
Preference slider all the way left when running GPL, and moving it back all the way right when running anything

But I DOES work with GPL, just not on your system.

See my other post, and eat your words!!
I bet you didn't properly clear your system of detonator drivers.

RSC and now from my own experience I know it works.
Rubbish! Works great with IL2 in opengl.
Rubbish! Works fine on my system. Your PC is badly configured!
No problems here.

Which drivers are you using and do you get those transparent textures at
trackside like the other Radeon users have mentioned?

Hi Dave
Catalyst 3.1, and very surprised to see NO transparent textures! Word of
warning though, you MUST turn off the connection meters when online as
they kill the frame rate by 33%.

IL2 looks much better with the 9700 Pro and is at the same time faster than
with a GF4-4600. And, you can use OpenGL without a problem, it's still
faster and looks better than with the GF4-4600.
As for GPL, I'm using 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 8xAniso. It never leaves the
36fps mark, and there are no graphics errors. That was the same I got with
the GF4. but the Radeon's got a better 3d image quality and much better AA.
However, the Radeon is IMO more difficult to configure than the GF4-4600.
The GF4 on my system was plug and play - plug in, set to max quality, and
have fun.
With the Radeon, I had to battle stutters in online gaming with IL2. The
stutters went away with the new Catalyst drivers (Feb. 10), as these are now
so fast in OpenGL that you can use OpenGL with IL2 at high quality settings
and get flawless fps. I still get moderate stutters online in D3D in IL2. It
is also important to clear out the Nvidia drivers well, especially in Win9x
(I did it in Safe Mode, installed Default PCI VGA card drivers for the GF4,
deinstalled Nvidia drivers using Nvidia's own deinstaller, and then check
the Registry for remainders), and to make sure you have nothing running in
the background. Anything running in the background, even if it doesn't do
anything, can lead to stutters.

Continuing saga of Radion 9500 Pro: Sent the card back, got new card.
This one won't even boot Win2K! Got a new motherboard. No help, so
that was wasted. Strangely, it WILL boot a laptop! Power supply is
300W, maybe that isn't enough. When the card is removed, system boots
OK on the mobo card. Am I doomed forever not to play accelerated sims?
SPS
You do disable the mobo card in the bios when using the Radeon I
suppose, otherwise you could end up with an oldfashioned hardware
conflict. Had lots of ATI trouble myself so now I swear by Nvidia
stuff, always worked for me, never had real troubles...

My son has a 9500 pro with a 300w power supply. Assuming yours is of
decent quality, then it should work.

That's encouraging. Haven't found solution yet. My son is a software

me? Food and lodging provided! SPS

I do that stuff locally for friends of my wife...I have no friends...but
don't tell Goy what I charge. A 12pack of Diet Coke 12oz cans. That's
right, one half rack of DC for as many trips to your house it would take.
And they say America isn't the land of opportunity any more....

I'll have a wheelbarrow full of diet coke waiting. I doubt you can
claim you have no friends. You have been ready with suggestions for a
lot of people. That doesn't create enemies! I'm suspicious of the
power supply, as some people say they fade with time. Maybe next move
is to get one that will crank a Harley. Cheers,
