Real racing copying online racing? (Sunday's NASCAR race)

Its been my opinion that online racing is not very realistic. This is based on a lot of the extra rules that leagues put in, and some game features like auto chat. A example of this is how a lot leagues say if your being lapped go high. Now during Sunday's NASCAR race DW basically said what I have always thought. That if you are being lapped to just hold your line and its up to the faster cars to get around you. However I'm thinking that after this Sunday's race that someone in the NASCAR brass must be racing online. After that call with Matt K. and Jeff G. I'm betting someone got their league rules mixed up the real ones. If you have not seen the race and will catch a tape delay you may want to stop reading now. For those of you did watch WET was with this no passing the leader crap? As far as I know the rule is race back to the line. Matt slowed up to let his Roush teammates get their laps back, but Jeff wasn't going for it. I am a Roush Racing fan so I'm glad my guys got their laps back, but I honestly think that was a BS call. It so reminded me of one of my most frustrating online races. Flashpoint did have a rule of no racing back to the line on a yellow flag. I forget what track it was at, but it seemed there was a yellow about ever 5 laps. I was racing a guy for a top five spot, but every time I'd get along side him and have the line going into the next corner when a darn yellow would come out and by league rules I would have to fall back in line behind him. That happened for four or five times in a row. So I'm curious what you guys think a) of the call made by NASCAR and b) racing back to the flag online. My take on it a) It was a silly call made by NASCAR. I will give them credit for giving the other cars their lap back. If the would have just put Jeff in front of Matt without giving the others their laps back would have just been silly. Of course that would be nothing new for NASCAR lol b) While I understand not racing back to the line I do feel that if you made a pass that lap it should stand, and if your attempting a clean pass when the yellow flies you should be able to finish it. How does RASCAR handle it? MadDAWG
The problem lies with a driver giving anyone a lap back. Just don't get it. I don't care if he's your Brother. No lap back. I worked to put you down, now you can stay there. Mike

If there is a gentlemen's agreement to not race back to the line, so be it, and if someone wants to ignore that agreement, so be it. What goes around comes around. As far as I know, the NASCAR rule is to race back. I thought the call was total BS, but then one of the announcers said that this has been superceded lately by instructions given at the drivers meetings. If that's true, they need to go ahead and change the rule. Personally, I wish NASCAR would quit sticking its nose in every corner and just let them race. 2c, Gerald

a) They should have just let them race. There was no need for them to get involved at all. If NASCAR would just follow their own rulebook, there would be no controversy. Let's see if anyone gives Jeffy a lap back after this. b) Online, I think you should do whatever you think the safest course of action is. Even if it means risking a BF. At least now you have a chance for it to be cleared by sympathetic race officials. Yellow means there is already a problem on at least one part of the track. With the generally deficient spotter AI, I think it is probably safest just to back off a slight bit, stop actively racing, and concentrate on picking up the pacecar safely. Sometimes you need to floor it to get by trouble, and sometimes you might decide that this will be your best and only shot of getting by a particularly tough opponent, particularly late in the race. But in general, I am not a fan of racing back (online), as it adds risk to an already risky situation. Not everyone agrees, which is what makes life interesting. cheers, Gerald
NASCAR needs to stay out of the Budwieser tent until the race is over, that call was pathetic, it instantly reminded me of the WWF. I never saw the rest of the race , I turned it off at that point. I would agree that lappers should just hold line, I used to move high and still seemed to get creamed by a leader trying to perform ill timed slide jobs thinking that your supposed to lift as well. I hold my line, I drive where I am, the leaders must realize that you do have to turn right sometimes even when turning left all day. In other "lesser" NASCAR series the rule has been defended many times.... On the Modified tour George "The Duke of" Kent won, not one, but two tour races by racing back to the line, coming down to take the caution. Now this was on short tracks, one of them a 1/4 mile if I remember correctly.... But of course that is far from the spotlight... so maybe the rule do change... I think NASCAR thought they would get a better show if those guys got their laps back, I know that would have happend last week if Spencer had not lost a lap due to an ill placed caution... And NASCAR is all about the show now.

Hey, do I see debris in turn 3? I wish we could go back to the days when Ford v. Chevy actually meant something. When the Winston Million was actually an unheard-of amount of money. When aero meant you had a goofy-looking rear window glass, but one that came on an actual production model! And no goddamn restrictor plates! And you could drive an Oldsmobile! I mean, where in the heck is NASCAR Legends 2, ca. 1985? Where!?? Sigh. I will never rest. ;) Gerald
