At Talladega in N2003 when a car gets the slightest damage, the top speed drops off dramatically thus simulating Aero damage.
Can someone explain how in real life, this is not happening?
#8 is easily leading the race with a banged up nose and #16 has no RF fender and is running up front.
Did Papy miss the mark with their damage physics here?.
Thats an awful complex question. Jr didnt have extensive damage. A tear in
the fascia below a reinforcement bar. Biffle had damage on the right side.
Everyone knows its the left front corner that counts most. Its the corner
that cuts the air first.
As far as Papy missing the mark. I think they did well for a 50 buck
simulator. Contact Boeing if yer looking for that "really real" realism...

I've lead, and won, many Papyrus races at restrictor plate tracks with
damage that was fixed, from N2 to NR2003. Even if I loose a sheet metal on
my front when the damage is fixed, it's possible when you're a good driver.
And for sure, Jr. is a pretty good driver <G>

Yes, they don't model damage from driving off the pavement (it would
rule if someone actually modelled chassis and rotor damage from going
off into the grass).
FWIW, the amount of contact required to cause damage in N2003 is still
a bit less than real life. If you hit something hard enough to do
serious aero damage in N2003 you'd probably be seriously disabled or
retired in real life. Minor damage from bump drafting/tapping the
wall tends to have a minimal effect on aero in the game, and anything
greater than that is going to cause problems in the game or in real
life. I still find the damage model to be pretty forgiving if you
compare it to the real races.

Yep! Especially NR2002, it ran "acceptable" with everything off. And like
I wrote, I've won some races. At Dega, with 0% draw ahead, you have some
pretty good FPS.

In my experience after brushing the walls and repairing MINOR damage (less than what I saw today on TV), it has always been nearly
impossible to continue and maintain pace with the other cars. Lap speeds always drop a minimum of 5mph from what you had before the
scrape.

Yep - I scraped the wall saturday, and couldn't even SEE the damage. It still
dropped my speed noticeably...

But you're still the same driver you were *before* the damage. So how do you
explain the 10mph slower? You can't just put that on driver skill...

what tracks? I did dega several times this week, and I find I could draft
pretty well with slight damage, until I unfortunately tboned one guy who
spun, that one did engine damage. I concur that little damage kills top
speed and ability to pass and to get ahead of the pack, like you can when
not damaged, but I still ran top 5 out 17 cars until the T-bone. Might be
that your setups are too dependant on aero (as your car pushes way too much
without perfect aero?) as My gearing and other factors most likely are
different.
I will also add that maybe, I was just lucky with the damage Lottery this
race, compared to you guys, as I notice I get various damage for tapping the
wall (at what I would call consistently the same conditions) when offline
practicing Texas. Sometimes you get bad damage, sometime the damage seems
to help the car, yet I would swear to you that I hit the wall damn near
exactly the same on the same 20th lap, in fact it was worse damage IF I let
off tryin to lessen the damage as compared to the driving the thing in
there, & preparing for the bounce off the wall... :P
Well that is my .0002 cents

I think it could be the setups then, as the gears on those
fixed setups are pathetic for tona/dega. IMHO, any at all Aero damage is
magnified... whoever runs the Rascar server could test this theory, make a
setup with FAST, just change the gear. everyone get in... It kind of less
noticeable with open setups, if/when you have a decent setup.
