Toca Race Driver Patch

Thanks for the update. I've reloaded TOCA and tried it with the patch in the hope that the dreadful steering would also be fixed. It is not. I gave the BTCC Silverstone circuit a try. On the straight, the steering sloths around like a drunken Hippo. Get within 50 meters of a corner and suddenly the same input will turn the car into a flea with a rocket up its' backside. When out-braking an opponent into a corner, a large steering input is needed to change position on the straight and then I need to _reduce_ the input to go around the corner. Codemasters needs to urgently patch this steering issue, to take away the console-style steering help in corners and to add linear input for wheels. I appreciate Codemasters getting this first patch out so quickly but surely the most important issue is to make the game playable? By the way, for those who may think I am an arcade hater, I have just installed NFS Hot Pursuit 2. It is advertised as an arcade racer, plays as an arcade racer and I am really enjoying it. A game will never be a true simulation of the driving experience but if it claims the title of 'sim', there should at least be some remote attempt at it. Too many instances of cpu/graphic power are filtering through for this to be a coincidence but.. There seems to be a direct relation between power and steering. Plus alot of people have found a very good steering compromise after alot of indepth trial and error. Its not perfect,it never will be but a hell of alot of people are eating humble pie right now. AD

That's supposed to be part of the R&D money which adds to the price. Now.....if they want to pay me to beta test......then that's different. BUT they're NOT!!! > > Its not perfect,it never will be but a hell of alot of people are eating > humble pie right now. No humble pie here and I'll be d&mned if I'm going to spend several hours tweaking steering settings for something that should work out of the box. This one does NOT. Remember Ford Racing? I and many others could NEVER get that game to properly recognize a MSFF Wheel. I even emailed Infogrames and received several responses from the supposed head of development for that title. His final and last response was more or less it works for us....you're on your own. They never released a patch (that I saw) that fixed it so it would properly recognize that wheel. Looks like the same situation with TOCA......unless someone at Codemasters accepts responsibility (now there's a concept in reality) and fixes the problem. -- callsignviper The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask the right questions.

You just contradicted yourself there, sunshine. And just how many PC games have you bought that worked "right out of the box" ?

yea, ive tweaked it a LOT, and it drivers really nicely. The handling is nice most of the time, just can be a little bit forgiving sometimes. Having a lot of fun online. Huh? BTW: Ford Racing was returned for a refund due to those problems and the responses I received. > And just how many PC games have you bought that worked "right out of the > box" ? > > The vast majority of the games I have purchased have worked fine for my needs "right out of the box." The 'fact' that has come out is that fps over 150 gives a real boost to the steering, this obviously needs vsync off to be implemented. The trial and error side of it is purely that.I knew it was wrong from the off so i didnt bother with it seriously until the patch arrived. Then i looked in the hardware config and saw a few extra items,if you experiment with these you will find that Codemasters actually have made some efforts here. The conclusion to all this is 56k modem chosen for better online performance regardless of your net connection speed.Unlucky people can be capped at 64 fps if they have the wrong combination of xp,mobo and nvidia. The steering rewards you if you move over to Sim mode driving and sim handling steering, both of these options must be chosen. Then a simple trial and error in Controllers/Advanced as some like a bigger deadzone than others and with the saturation point and it just about passes. From initial bad feelings about this 'game' or more accurately the steering i have got close to being satisfied but that doesnt mean it doesnt need a linear patch,it definitely does. AD p.s my first post about this was to highlight the amount of foul mouthed children on the forum in the first week saying it was the worst game ever who now are not to be seen....why..?Coz they have got a refund...? NO...coz they are hosting 12 man races in gamespy all night..!!!!

NO...coz > they are hosting 12 man races in gamespy all night..!!!! Of course they are. You're gonna dismiss me, I know. How can I comment on something I haven't even tried? I have not tried this nor do I intend to as I have no intention of spending hours trying to just get the bloody thing driveable. It is, by reading here, at worst mediocre and at best a pretty fun crossover title. If I want fun little blasts I'll dig out the Dreamcast and play play F355 or Daytona. They work "right out of the box". Fun crossover titles invariably, for me, offer a short term buzz and end up on the shelf never to be played again. Now, if it was driveable out of the box and didn't require 150+ fps to run properly I'd probably try the demo to see if this was a title that broke that rule. NFS:PU *almost* did - I bought that one on the strength of the demo. Regards, Mark
Mark, you really should try it - it is amazing fun, especially the online races - they are very toca esque (as in real life) three cars into a corner, scraping mirrors - this where the damage model really kicks ass, as windows blow out, bits of wing hang off - it all looks superb. D'you reckon it's worth it to someone who never liked the other TOCA games? Which I did try, btw :-) (Quite enjoyed the original CM Rally - just in case you think I'm being and anti Codies snob!) Hmm, hard to say. Depends what u didnt like about them. Im not pro or anto anything...... Doesnt matter to me, but, i am really enjoying this game. It isnt going to win awards for the most acurate physics (which i have a masters degree in), but it sure seems to make for competitive racing online, where driver skill plays the most part. You get dirty in your car, and soon it'll have half it's body pannels hanging off, and be limping round at 50mph.... Thing is, i could probably write a game based upon real world physics (not over night!) and i wreckon it would be undriveable. How am i going to write in the arse tilt angle : ).... regards, Rick. Doesnt matter to me, but, i am really enjoying this game. I didn't like the AI, I didn't like the fake way that laptimes were kept down - no matter what you did with the gearing the car would shoot up to top speed and bounce off the limiter, I certainly didn't like the no-understeer handling. If you turned in to a corner at too high a speed, the back end would just snap around. If you accellerated through a corner and hit the magic number, it would snap out. I don't ever remember understeering into the gravel, and FWD cars should be more prone to that that RWD. The sound was OK in them, though, as were the graphics. The whole thing just felt too faked out, tho. > How am i > going to write in the arse tilt angle : ).... LOL! Doesn't have to super-realistic for me to enjoy - I like to play Daytona on the DC from time to time because it's a blast. The only arcade/sim crossover title that got serious platime from me was the original Gran Turismo. With N2003 running I don't get the time I would like for LFS or GPL, never mind the couple of FPS titles I've got that I'd like to try out - so I can hold out on TOCA RD :) Mark

ISTR It was well known with Codemasters TOCA and TOCA2 that if you upped the frame rate (by turning off graphic options) the cars handled better and you could get faster times. 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~pjgtech/home.html
