I don't know if this has been posted here before, but I have just used this
"routine" to remove DirectX 9.0 from my computer and reinstalled DirectX
8.1a. This is easy to do, and it works like a champ. Those of you who may
be like me, and don't like the way many things operate on your system after
(thinking you had to) installing DX 9.0 (maybe during the NR2003
installation)......can now rejoice in easily returning your system to DX 8.1
(or any version you want). I am still running Win98SE....and my system was
unstable and had lots of hangs and BSOD's with DX 9.0 installed.
Save these instructions, they are universal for removing any version of DX
and installing any version of DX!
Removing DirX from your Computer:
1. Download the version of DirX you want to install from MS or any other
suitable source (or copy from a game CD if you have one).
2. Clear your c:\Windows\temp directory and copy the .exe DirX installer
you've just downloaded to that directory. Leave it there for now.....go to
step #3.
3. Go to Start/Run and clear the window, type in: "regedit" (omitting the
quotes), hit the "enter key" on your keyboard. You will now be in the
WindowsXX (any version) Registry using a "registry editor" called,
"regedit." This is a little utility that automatically installs with all
versions of Windows...its just fine to use it.
4. Go to "HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/DirectX" - this folder
contains the DX version entry that DirectX uses to make sure that a current
installation is an earlier DX version than the one being installed (or it
won't do the installation). I don't like to "delete" any registry entry
until I'm sure that it doesn't screw up my computer, so I like to "rename"
things. So, right click - rename the "DirectX" folder to something like
"xDirectX" and close the regedit program. ***DO NOT REBOOT YOUR COMPUTER at
this time!
5. Now, go to "Start/Run" and browse to the c:\Windows\temp folder, select
your Dx installer executable file and run the Dx installation routine.
Now...you can reboot your computer when so prompted.
6. Back at your desktop? Confirm that the DX version you are now running
is the correct one. The are several ways to do this, the easiest is to run
DXDiag (from the C:\Programs\DirectX\Setup tab)....look at the version
number of DX on the first tab/page.
7. If this is correct (it should show DX 8.1 if that's what you installed
after removing DX 9.0 - for example), then it would be wise to return to the
registry editor and remove/delete the "xDirectX" folder you created earlier
completely.....but its not totally necessary (but it is a good idea).
That's it, you are now back to the version DX you wanted.
Hope this is helpful.......

Tom Pabst
How to roll back from DirectX 9 to 8.1
Tom Pabst posted a method for removing DirectX 9 and reinstalling DirectX 8.1a, which helped Joel Willstein with lockups. Others warned that newer games need DirectX 9, recommended the DXBuster utility, or reported no problems with DirectX 9, and redTed and Tom Pabst traded jabs.

You're a life saver. Ever since I installed DirectX 9.0, I was
experiencing lockups just trying to double click almost any icon on my
desktop.

All very well, but you won't be able to play most current games as they
install (and need) DX9, e.g. Splinter Cell. Personally, I have had no
problems at all with DX9.

Must just be a certain subset of games, or I don't have enough current ones.
I'm still running 8.1, and don't see a need to change yet. Of course, the
newest game I have is N2003...

Sounds like you have found a real way to acheive a difficult solution.
But rather than go back...I would tend to try and find out why the new DX
was causing problems and work to correct those problems on my system.
After all, there were tons of users with problems when we upgraded to
dx3. Then dx5 then dx6 7 8 and 9. If we fall back to a lesser codec...we
are just putting off future problems...
Besides it's daylight savings time, shouldn't we be springing ahead?

Glad it helped you out, Joel.
I didn't have it that bad, I just wanted to return to DX8.1a so I could
continue to use 3DMark2001SE benchmarking (it wouldn't run with DX9.0a
installed). I think if I either had WindowsXP installed, or an ATI video
card (which uses some DX9.0 components) I would have stayed with it. But,
the fact that 3DMark2001SE wouldn't run.....and I am using a GF4ti4600 which
doesn't use any DX9.0 components.....I opted to go back to DX8.1a for a
while (still running Win98SE....best gaming ops-sys, IMHO....so far). Also,
DX9.0 whacked about 10% off my sim frame rates (as measured with FRAPS in
F1-2002 and NR2003). Not a big deal, granted....but hey, those precious
little FPS points came at considerable expense and effort (at tweak-city).
By the way Joel.....you don't say what video card, operating system, etc.,
but I understand if you use an Nvidia card, and do not have a DX9.0
certified driver (which is the 41.xx's and higher I believe), some people
are reporting similar problems as you said you had......just thought I'd
mention that in case there was some reason you really needed DX9.0 to be
installed.
Take care....

Not meaning to dispute you, but I don't know of any "games" that will run in
Win98SE (which is all of the ones currently on the market) that will not run
with DX8.1a installed. Perhaps you are speaking from experience.....and not
rumor. If that is the case, I suspect something else is keeping your game
from running......it shouldn't be required to have DX9.0 installed (except
to take advantage of some graphics software in the game, but that only is
applicable to the ATI cards, since no Nvidia card uses DX9.0 functions). I
could be wrong about this....but I just have not heard of any games that
won't run........from checking all the graphics card/game forums lately.

I didn't figure it out! I was chatting with a guy in a graphics card tech
Forum......and we were screwing around with one of those DOS based "DX
Uninstall programs"......which neither of us could manage to get to work
right.....and we came up with this "stupid but it works" thing! It was
really his idea.....I was just a willing "guinea pig" to try it! I do think
if you could manage to tap into the beta group for DX.......you'd find all
kinds of things that can be done with it......that don't get made public by
MS. One I know you can do (but don't know how to do it....yet)....is to
"mix" versions of DX so you can discard the .dll's that don't work for you,
and keep the ones that do! In other words, you can sort of "cook up your
own recipe" of DX version on your computer! That would be cool!
But, thanks for thinking I would be smart enough to come up with this thing
on my own accord! I'm not, however.......LOL....

Tom

right now, that's not the case and my system ran better on DX8.1a (so did
the sims I run).

I'm also running Win98se on my system, while the computer I just built
for my son runs XP professional. Here's my systems specs:
Asus A7V 333 Mother Board, board flashed to lastest Bios and latest VIA 4in1
drivers
AMD XP 2000+
X-Tacy Ti4 4400 drivers: 43.45
512 MB of DDR SDRAM pc2700
Win98se
Joel
I just can't convience myself or my wife that I need to spend another
$150 for XP again. Too bad once you buy it, you can't use it on all your
computers like you could with 98.That's the main reason why I'm still
running Win98se.

Strange,
My system is screaming with dx9a , and runs 3dmark 2001se just fine.
Athlon XP2400+ ( overclocked to 2600+)
ATI 9700 Pro
Very pleased with the peformance.

Not disappointed at all, TB. Surprised and delighted. So much so, that I
think I may alter my whole approach to this newsgroup and some of the regs
who I have had "disagreements" with in the past. I might even send a
personal message of apology to JS and DE in the hope that one day I will be
accepted and loved by everyone here ;)
Seriously, that DX removal info was very helpful.
