Running GTR2002 without Windows XP Service Pack 1

Zen asked whether GTR2002 needs Windows XP SP1, since he got an unexpected error at startup. Several said it runs fine without SP1, and suggestions included fixing runtime files and reducing the number of installed cars. Zen eventually got the lite launcher working after reinstalling drivers and DirectX 9.

Hi all I've tried installing and running GTR, with no succes. I have received significant input from several of you -Thanks all! But I would like to know, has anybody managed to run it without window XP's update? Thanks Zen

From what I have read, you need the service pak. But I'm not sure if you need the service pak for the mod or just the pre-menu. Refresh my feeble noggin...what is happening when you try and run it. Have you read the pinned installation thread at the Simbin forums? dave henrie

Hi, I can't get it to start.. I get an "unexpected error: quitting". I made a clear install of F1 2002, installed the nocd, ran it. Crashed my Minardi big time in Spain. Then installed GTR02. Then ran GTRun to create the proper .ini. Ain't running. Installed the patch; same result. Maybe if I tried it with someone else's ini file? I did look up the simbin threads, and I did find a similar cases, but the guy never was able to run it. I use normal fonts. GTR better be good .... I think it was using gtrun instead of the other exe. GT run kinda bypasses the pre-menu where all the config stuff is squared away. Double check that F1 2k2 is working then try to load GTR2k2 with the GTRacing 2002.exe If you have win98, make sure the media player is updated via MSupdate. If you use somebody else gtr2002config.ini you have to change the 2nd half of the file to match your own config.ini file for the F1 sim. If you double clik on the file config.ini you'll see a bunch of text. About halfway down is a line that says: grid=22 everything below that in your GTR2002config.ini should match your original f1 config.ini info. dave henrie

"Zen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<E2Fra.49256$[email hidden]>... > Hi, > > I can't get it to start.. I get an "unexpected error: quitting" As a programmer I dealt with these things several times before to get my own programs running. The "unexpected error" comes from a wrong registration of the runtime files comdlg32.ocx and/or comctl32.ocx which are used by the GTRMod Launcher. They are supposed to be in the system folder, so when a program needs a newer version of these files it overwrites them there. So does the GTR installation. Obviously another program you installed earlier did not place these runtime files into the system folder and the GTR installation could not update them. Now the registry points to the older files which cause the unexpected error. What you can do is to change the path in the registry pointing to these runtime files to the system folder. Or, if you dont dare to change the registry, do a search for these files on your harddisks and replace all of them with the ones from the system folder. This always helped. Klaus

Other than security (maybe), are there any benefits to installing SP1? It seems I've read this can slow your system down. \Todd "Kronos" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Kronos....if **someone** has a pirate copy of Win XP and wants to add SP1 it will detect that it is a pirate copy, install and slow it down to a crawl or not install at all. This is because it has detected certain parameters. If **someone** were to alter those parameters then SP1 can't detect them and installs as per normal. Is that what you are asking? AD
Klaus, I did find a older copy of each file elsewhere on the drive, and I did overwrite them with the version found in the systems folder as you suggest, but I still get the same error message. Any thoughts? Zen "Klaus Hrbrand" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > "Zen" <[email hidden]> wrote in messagenews:<E2Fra.49256$[email hidden]>...

Looking at the pinned threads at Simbin, it could be you have too many cars installed. Try using the gtlite.exe as well as gtrun.exe. Next use the bat file inside f1 2k2 that removes the pro veh files. Finally a car manager could be used to reduce the number of available cars to LESS than 60 dave henrie

LOL :) For the purpose of telling you for the same reason i was told..so as NOT to do it because it was illegal. I sometimes do things and then get told that was illegal....!! So in this case i was told before to stop me from ever doing it :) So what NOT to do is this. Either have a copy of Win XP including SP1 cracked.....those naughty people do actually have such a thing. Or use the available 'utilities' to alter parameters prior to SP 1 update. Neither applies to me as i have Win ME and it is bug free and runs beautifully.;-) AD

Hi, I finally managed to get GTR2002lite to run, after re-installing video drivers and MS Directx 9.0 (what a mod!). It remains unclear why it wasn't working before. I wish I new, because that could help me understand why I can't get the full version of GTR to run. I still get the same "unexpected error: quitting: message. Any idea why one would run, but not the other? Zen "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Usually the reason is tooooooo many cars in your car folder. THe regular premenu seems to have a limit of 60 active cars. HOWEVER...The only difference between gtlite and gtr.exe is the intro movie. You are not really missing anything functionally. I wouldn't worry about it if you can get gtlite working. dave henrie
