Codemasters' IRL game prompts CART versus IRL bickering
News of a Codemasters IndyCar (IRL) game drew dismissive responses about the IRL and doubts about Codemasters' sim credentials, while some ICR2 fans hoped for a good modern oval sim. Most of the thread rehashed the CART/IRL split, team defections, engine suppliers and pace-car programmes, in a mostly good-humoured tone.

IRL is an abomination. IRL a storebought childrens toy that maims it's
drivers. IRL has to BUY it's stars from the real POINTY CAR league. IRL
turns only left, with ONLY USA drivers except it can't find enough dirt-
trackers who want to try pavement and ONLY races in the USA UNTIL Honda
foots the bill to race in Japan. IRL is one man saying play my way or
else. IRL is bad mojo. IRL is bad.
now with that introduction, what else can I tell you about a league
spawned in the depths of hell by the very child of satan himself?

ICR2 was great. Of course, you also turned right on all but 3 tracks.
I dunno where the fun would be in an all-oval indycar game. I also
don't really see the fun in watching the IRL, so ymmv.

'spensive. Now the IRL cars are so 'spensive they can't fill the grids.
Tthe lack of entries @ this year's 500 (the lowest in years) guarantees the

Yup, I don't follow the IRL that closely through out the year on TV,
but I haven't missed a race yet at Texas in 2 years. Really exciting
to watch in person. I bet if I had an IRL game that was somewhat
close to N2003 I would probably be a little more into the IRL.

Admit it, you're just grumpy because there hasn't been a Viper presence

Jeez Dave,
Lighten up!!!
Most people were over the split 3-5 years ago already, yeesh!
And... As things stand now, the IRL is more CART-like than CART itself!
CART=Spec cars, Spec Engines, Spec Tires, Subsided teams, and ride-buying
foreign drivers (sort of what the IRL looked like 5 years ago)
And... Once the IRL adds a few road races (which even Roger Penske predicts
by 2004-2005) the IRL will have truly become what CART was.

Your idea makes perfect sense, but I'd say it's a matter of $$$. If
Ford throws some more money at them, I bet the entire fleet will become
Fords (or Ford holdings).

Lighten UP? In the battle between good and evil, I have no time to
lighten up! I stand against the tide, raging at the inevitable all for
your sakes in the great cosmic scheme.(Damn! the bs meter must be pegging
right about now) :>

Precisely! Nothing was wrong with the series pre-split EXCEPT 'he
whose name I shall not utter' wasn't in charge.

Yes it was a miracle that CART managed a field of 18. That CART had to
pay for many of those teams is further proof of damage done. I can only
think that CART was able to 'steal' Rocketsports because of two reasons.
Rocketsports has had a fairly productive relationship with Ford via the
Jaguar Trans AM program, and the IRL budgets have really skyrocketed.
> And... Once the IRL adds a few road races (which even Roger Penske
> predicts by 2004-2005) the IRL will have truly become what CART was.
The irl is florishing due to Tobacco sponsorship wanting to be in the
Worlds biggest race. If/when Tobacco is banned from such endeavors, where
do the Team Penskes and Teams Kool Greens(excuse me, Team Andretti I go
where my sponsors say I go/Green) go? How much more $$ will The nameless
one have to spread around to keep those teams under his control?
The IRL 'would have been a great concept. A fine league in it's own
right. But a certain someone used the worlds biggest race as a club. It
took a while but the club is wearing down the walls. Pity...
Oh and as JDE so clearly pointed out in another message, it's the irl
that has the yellow chevy...clearly a sign of devil worship if you ask me.
:) (I have had a thing about yellow chevys ever since Rutherford got two
wins in a car Al Unser Sr should have been driving after doing all the r&d
racing the years previous) See even more connection, Johhny Rutherford
was one of the first cheerleaders for the 'Indy and some other tracks'
league. Tom Sneva and AJ Foyt being the others. Rutherford has twice as
many Indy wins as Mario Andretti yet whose name has been bandied around
this past month? AJ? I suspect he'll bolt open wheel racing completely
soon if he ever gets his Nascar act together. And Tom doesn't even wake up
a motion detector these days. This has nothing to do with anything
tho...just thought I'd try and bend the meter some more.
Could you imagine the racing we'd have with a Penske mounted Castro-neves
vs Sebastion Bordais/Paul Tracey on the CART circuits? That is why I will
never accept the unacceptable. Even long after the Indy 500 overwhelms the
advertisers.

While it can be reasonably argued that Honda overtly nudged Michael/Team
AGR over to the IRL, KOOL left after last season. This year's green is
7-Eleven green.

Jim Hall's back-door Chevy ties were presuambly long gone before the
Yellow Submarine came to be. After all, the 2K (and earlier Lola) had a
Cossie DFX dropped in the back, as opposed to a small block like Gurney
et. al. used, or the Ryan Falconer-developed (with factory blessing)
turbo V6 that Lindsey Hopkins (and later A.J.) used. Also, Big Al was
sick of Hall's arrogance in taking credit from John Barnard for the 2K,
and lack of subsequent development on it. Thus, he left for Bobby
Hillin, Sr's Longhorn effort, which I believe built a car off Williams
FW-08 plans.

He was also arguably on payroll as pace car driver/rookie coach. Not
wise to badmouth "Him Who Signs the Checks." ;)
Much as Big Al later served as a coach, and Mears does now.
Regardless of politics, Lone Star JR was always a great guy to talk to
the times I snagged his autograph. His bio from a couple years ago is a
great read too. Class act.

I'd argue the opposite will be true, given A.J.'s recent Mansell-esque
whining about the NASCAR environment.

Differences of opinion are cool by me, just stay reasonably close to the
facts. I'll give you credit for well-developed conspiracy theories,
though. :-)

Wow, that fits IRL so well it should be on their homepage!
It has to be said, I'm not a big fan of the gIRLies. Seem to need
driving lessons, most of 'em.

Like Andretti v. de Ferran at Phoenix & Dixon v. Kanaan at Motegi
incidents among others? :-)

Jesus was about to be crucified and Pilot asked him if he really was the
Son of God. Jesus said, "You want the truth?" Pilot replied, "Of course I
want the truth." So Jesus said..."You want the truth? YOU CAN'T HANDLE
THE TRUTH."
The moral of this joke I stole from some magazine is....
I've NEVER let the truth stand in my way.... :)
