PC Gamer column sparks hope of a Papyrus CART sim
Dave Henrie relayed a report that PC Gamer said Papyrus would make a CART sim after leaving NASCAR, which excited ICR2 fans. Chad Rogers clarified that the columnist only argued Papyrus should do it. The long thread wandered into birthdays, Aussie V8 jokes and whether niche series like CART or F1 sell games compared with NASCAR.

A fellow CART mod racer posted this tidbit....has anyone else heard of
this info??
"Finally a new CART PC game
In the latest issue of PC Gamer, a columnist stated that when Papyrus
(Indycar Racing, NASCAR Racing, etc.) end their license with NASCAR,
they will develop a new CART computer sim game for 2004."

Oh.
My.
God.
I sent loads of emails to Papy and Cart trying to get them to do this, and
if this is true then I don't think I'm ever going to buy another racing sim
again (except ChampCar 2004/2005/2006 etc ;-). Codies can stick your gIRLy
'sim' up your ass, and nobody will even care if Racing Legends is ever
released! Maybe Geoff Crammond and the ISI guys could learn a bit about open
wheel racing simulators too (although they didn't really learn much from
GPL, did they?).
Not only that, but a decent version of Brands Hatch! And undoubtedly a DN
converter for the 'Ring!
I haven't been this excited since those few hours between hearing about
Racing Legends and realising that the Wests were doing it.

The idea sort of grows on you doesn't it. I've just spent several hours
messing about with hard disk backups in preparation for (hopefully) a
motherboard upgrade tomorrow. It's not been an easy ride, but all the way
through it I've been stewing over the idea of what could be possible with
the N2003 engine. ICR2 and a legendary flight sim called Tornado were
reviewed in the (1994?) magazine which persuaded me to buy my first PC.
Having already been inspired once this month by Half Life 2 I hardly dare
think how great a modern Papyrus Cart sim would be.
But it would be *wonderful* to have this to look forward to.

I'm not really looking forward to HL2 because I thought the original HL was

Hold on Ladies, it is the sim column and Mr. Manhood says it makes sense for
Papy to develop a CART sim. Nowhere does it say that they are working on
one at all. The CART rights are with another company until 2004 and Mr.
Manhood summarizes that they would probably come cheap right now. I too
hope they do, but I have heard nothing at all to lead me to believe they are
going to.

Hey, it's all in good humour ;-)
There's no built up rage, and my opinion of them will change just as soon as

I just wish they'd realise that the 'done when it's done' philosophy is a

The last 2 companies that I'm aware of with CART rights were Papy

Midway, who did stuff like Flag-To-Flag and CART Fury and probably

Agreed about the TV audience. The numbers are quite low. I posted a
week or so ago, something I read in a Sports magazine, that in the USA all
of the openwheel broadcasts to date for 2003, F1, CART, and irl combined,
didn't equal the ratings Nascar got for their Saturday night Richmond race.
However, there are tons of live audiences. 600,000 paying
Canadiens,(Toronto & Vancouver 3 day ticket totals) Similar numbers in
Mexico for those two races. Big numbers at Long Beach, Portland. Road
America was down last year, Mid Ohio was about Average. I'm curious to see
how the Saturday Milwaukee crowd will be since Ovals are Cart's weakest
ticket seller. Will Cleveland Rock under the lights? Will Mario
Andretti's name bring back the Road America fans?
CART events at Long Beach and Portland Oregon(pronounced Ore uh gone)
<not Or re GUN> were the single biggest fan attendance events for those
states...(just like that race in Indianaopolis is)
World Wide F1 buries even Nascar, but here in the states, the fender
crowd is king.

Knock it off, you two reprobates.
One day you'll be as old as I am, you know!
I have always remained loyal to GPL and also the NASCAR series of releases.
Both products have been fixtures on my series of PC's.
But because I don't race on-line I sort of drifted away from RAS because I
found that a lot of the subject matter was (is) multiplayer-orientated.
But now that the classic GPL tracks such as Spa, Nurburgring and Rouen (and
hopefully some of the add-ons in the mould of Rheims, Bathurst et al) can be
enjoyed within the excellent of N2003, I am looking forward to more
entertainment from GPL.
Who would have dreamed, back in 1998, that a computer sim such as GPL could
have such a long and honorable life?
I certainly didn't.

Sorry you cannot talk about the IRL here <snickers>
Let's see, for CHAMP races the Grandstands for the race are pretty high, and
the world-wide audience is nothing to spit on. How many people watch the IRL
outside of America? yeah that's what I thought...
But let's cut the political crap here. What REALLY matters to us? It's the
racing. The _motorsport_. Political crap doesn't affect anything about us,
behind our wheels, racing on the screen. What we want is something that is
fun to drive, challenging. I'll take a CART sim. They are cars that are
challenging, superior in technology, and the tracks are really great. It's
also a much more challenging multiplayer experience. Nothing above applies
to the IRL.
High-powered open-wheel road course cars
vs.
Medium-powered open wheel oval cars
Tracks like Laguna Seca, Brands Hatch, Montral, Elkhart Lake, Mid-Ohio,
Surfer's Paradise, Long Beach, etc...
vs.
Indianapolis
Motegi
Kentucky Speedway (ooooh the prestige)
Pikes Peak

I'm not saying I wouldn't like it. I just seriously doubted the rumors were
true because I don't think CART will help sell any copies.
As for the IRL, I can't force myself to watch a race. :-) I don't watch CART
anymore either though. I used to up until about two years ago.

I think there are still enough CART/IRL fans that it would sell very well.

What is wonderful after so many years of RAS is to see familiar names - the
same ones who were here back in 1998/99, after GPL was released.

Mid-Ohio,
Like I said in my other post, I have 0 interest in the IRL, but a game with
"Indy" splashed on the cover will click with more of the average public than
"CART". Everyone has at least heard of "Indy", "Formula 1", and "NASCAR".
They might not know much about those series (Americans don't watch F1 at
all, but still recognize the name), but they recognize the names. Very few
people will say they've heard of CART.
Racing fans would probably be inclined to by either game equally.

That's a bit of a broad and sweeping statement, isn't it?

I'm English, and I'm a big CART fan, big NFL fan too. Why? Dunno. It just
kinda happened...
Being such a petrolhead, I watch any motorsport I can, but NASCAR and the
IRL really do push me the most to turn over. Papy have got me interested in
NASCAR, but now that has stopped, I doubt I'll be watching any more NASCAR
races. If they made an IRL sim, I wouldn't watch the IRL, except the IRL 500
of course, but I already watch all the CART I can, so a Papy CART sim would
be unbelievable.
By the way, if you find somebody who has heard of Indy but not CART in the
UK, it only takes a second to tell them that what they think of as Indycars
are in fact ChampCars, and the *new* Indycars are just some poor little rich
guys' big joke. Outside the US, you just explain that ChampCars turn right
and they will be instantly prefer CART over the IRL :-)

But then again, who cares about the average public? And you really think
those people are what Papy goes for their market? It's the people whom
racing simulations are targeted for? How do you explain the low sales of
the last IRL racing game?
People who "barely" know from memory that the term "indy" is related to
motorsports. Yeah that's the future for racing sims!!!! Those are the
people Papy must market their serious/hardcore simulation <roll eyes>

I just told you above that CART is superior for us, driving the cars, in
every aspects of the simulation. Oh perhaps only driving the Indy could be
a slight (slight) advantage to the IRL. CART cars are much tougher to
master, they race on much more interesting tracks and the human vs. human
multiplayer experience would be superior.

Nope there is a bar here in town that opens up at 4am so a dozen or so
Spokanites can watch the race and smoke and eat together. I don't think
the bar can serve the go-juice that early tho...

I'm 100% positive they kept doing the NASCAR series year after year because
it sold to the average public and made them money. A huge chunk of those
copies were bought by people who walked into a store and saw a NASCAR car on
the box and thought it looked like fun. Nothing to do with being a sim head.
They loaded it up on their computer, it ran like crap because they didn't
have the hardware and wheel, and then they forgot about it.
GPL2 never happened because it didn't click with the general public at all.

I agree with that 99%. I'd be willing to bet tho, that a large portion
of the purchasers were family members....."Daddy loves Nascar, lets get him
that game for his 'puter...."
Same results tho.. Myst didn't become the first HUGE selling cdrom game
because it had a hardcore loyal following. The Sims don't sell zillions of
copies because of the clans. It's the average joe or josie that doesn't
know squat about computers that makes biggest games huge.

Yes.
Otherwise we'd have GPL 2, a slew of CART games, etc etc.

Good games sell. great games sell well.
What is the US audience for Rally Racing? How about for GT series
contests in real life? Yet what are the big names in those sports on
consoles/computers? Codemasters Colin McRae and Gran Turismo 3.
You make a great game that provides the adrenalin rush that the masses
want while providing the (at least optional) realism the sim fans want
and you'll sell well. The reason CART games haven't done particularly
well is because the games suck, and the reviews all pointed out how
bad they suck, not because of the license. (that's not to discount
the value of a great/popular license, just saying that as far as CART
has concerned, we don't have enough data to prove that a great CART
game won't sell, because no one has made one in years.)
