Last winter I scrounged up enough cash for a cpu upgrade, not much but I did manage to get an xp2100+.(the older version) Now this has been a very mild spring so the average temps have been in the 60 to 70 degree F range. With the racing box in the basement, I didn't need to worry about cpu temps much...even tho the average temp was 55c. But now that summer is starting to heat things up, I decided it was time to get a real heatsink...Slapped it on and it actually was NOT an improvement...I must not have gotten the heat-goop(artic silver) on properly cuz the only way I can get the system to boot without hanging is to underclock the 1700mhz cpu speed to 1300. Then with the lower settings I get pretty good results...so NEXT I decided a beefier fan was in order...still can't boot at the higher setting but the cpu temps are avgeraging 44degrees...which is good...trouble is...this dang high velocity 80mm turbofan is making me deaf. I used to keep the box cool with a big desk fan blowing into the open side of the system, but with the new fan I don't need that anymore..but this turbofrickinfan is just as noisy as the desk fan and thats with the case closed up... I saw case-liner noise insulation, but what real good would that do? since most of the noise is comming out of the slots for the front and rear case fans. I'm thinking it's time to move the system case under the desk and find a nice thick quilt to throw over it... What you say? Got any ideas??? WHAT???? dave henrie
Hey Dave, J.Simmons outlined his water-cooling install a few threads down. I wouldnt think an XP2100 would need it, butttt. ;) Mitch "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Last winter I scrounged up enough cash for a cpu upgrade, not much butI > did manage to get an xp2100+.(the older version) Now this has been a very > mild spring so the average temps have been in the 60 to 70 degree F range. > With the racing box in the basement, I didn't need to worry about cputemps > much...even tho the average temp was 55c. There's no need to have a noisy CPU fan these days unless you're into serious OC'ing, companies like CoolerMaser and GlacialTek both have very quiet HS/Fan comos rated for AMD's right up to the 3000+ The GlacialTek Silent Breeze for instance is rated at 19db and covers all AMD's up to 2700+, the Igloo 2310 is rated at 25db and covers all AMD's up to 2600+, there's also PRO versions of the Igloo's but those are far more noisy Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
Dave...i did exactly the same as you last year and i lasted a month before i just had to get rid of the noise. Swapped the Delta 80mm CONCORDE fan for a Pabst 80mm 19dB fan. System is 3 degrees hotter but at 42 degrees C im well cool overall. Whilst on this subject my best mates story will tickle you. He had heat problems and at about the time i suggested water cooling or maybe an SLK800 with Delta 80mm he finished building his boat that they were going to be living on. So i helped him moved it all on into its ready built compartment(he built the whole boat himself,it arrived as a steel shell),we rigged it all up and after about 30 mins i thought i'd check his temps. Well it was 16 degrees COOLER...!! For the simple reason it was up against the cold cold steel that had cold cold water outside...LOL Needless to say it saved him a few and he hasnt lined that section as he was going to but left it bare to aloow that cold to fight his heat. Good luck Dave AD

AU$20 for 1mx1m. i covered both sides, top, bottom, 1/2 the back and empty 5 1/4 bay opening on the front. got enough foam left to do one more case as well. i think it helps absorb the high frequency 'whine' from fans and HDD. i also bought a antec truepower PSU that controls the case fan (x4 80mm) speed. this helps a LOT. and i've got a vantec aeroflow HSF for my XP2400+. a faily quiet fan but it cools well. i don't overclock so its perfect. if i've got my 2 other computers running at the same time, i can't tell if the 2400+ box is on or not :)

Dave.. Seems to me that you are trying to "fix" the wrong problem. Whatever is making your CPU refuse to boot at normal FSB and multiplier, is probably also the reason it is running hot. I have an XP2100 running 42-44 degrees with a "retail fan" and I didn't even use AS goop, just the basic garbage that comes on the retail fan already. If I were you, I'd go to any of the AMD/cpu tech forums and get the main problem fixed first.....then see if the heat issue doesn't disappear automatically? Dave I'm running a koolance liquid cooled 2700+ system, ATM. Not cheap @300UKP, but it is very quiet. Plus, with CPU temps @ never more than 36c, even under a full load, the PC just heats the room up so well that I've had to install a noisy AC unit. :) Gerry

Well with the oem fan I would boot to temps around 54c. Then with heavy gamming it would creep up near 58c. But as the outside temps have begun to get near our norms of high 80's the cpu temp was climbing too. So I put the new heatsink on, and I'm not very good with that sort of detail...I'll be having one of my son's techy friends re-attach it shortly. But now with the turbofan, I'm averageing 41 to 44c but at the lower clock setting.(I haven't benched the lower clock speed yet, but sim performance is NOT that different--odd) > > If I were you, I'd go to any of the AMD/cpu tech forums and get the > main problem fixed first.....then see if the heat issue doesn't > disappear automatically? > > Tom I agree there is probably an underlying cause, I would suspect it's related to my clumsy efforts to put the new heatsink on properly. ok, sounds a bit weird. hmm....have you tried reseating the heatsink, cos if it ain't on properly (it may be difficult to tell) it will get pretty hot :o try reseating, but if it don't work then you may have a problem with case airflow. I would recommend an inlet and outlet fan to get the air moved. that will reduce temps by at least 5C. that's all i'll say for now, but if you need more help then ask again :) Kevin "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Is everything set to detect the cpu automatically? Was wondering if voltage settings were higher than normal. That can push the temp up. My XP1800+ runs fine at 42C with room temp at 78F and CPU core @1.6V. -- Peter Ives Remove ALL_STRESS only before sending me an email
"Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote in news:pfKCa.1083325$F1.127426@sccrnsc04: > Dave.. > > Seems to me that you are trying to "fix" the wrong problem. It seems POWER was the problem. I managed to get the full speed back into the chip by upping the vcore voltage from 1.75 to 1.775. I just did 20 laps with the cart mod and got reasonably good framerates without any problems. The extra fan was probably enough to tax the Antec 350 watt ps. so giving a little more juice seems to have solved the problem. Now, with the case closed up tight, and the bloody noisy fan running I am getting temps in the upper 40's without a load and around 53c under a load. Given it's nightime and under 70degrees F in this room right now, So I"ll reserve final judgement till I can measure the temps on a hot hot day. But this is still much better than the temps I got with the OEM fan and the case opened up with big ol helper fan blowing in. Guess I'll think about a speed controller now to quiet the fan some in low load situations. night all.... dave henrie
Dave...are you just ignoring me..? Swap your fan for a quiet fan...job done. Pabst make quiet fans for 12 here in UK. 12 to cure the noise....am i still worth ignoring..? Sheesh... AD
Dave Henrie <[email hidden]> wrote in news:[email hidden]: > [...] > improvement...I must not have gotten the heat-goop(artic silver) on > properly cuz the only way I can get the system to boot without hanging > [...] Just a note about the paste: a common mistake is to put too much. You should actually put very little, a very light smoky film at beast. It shouldn't interfere with the contact between the HSF and the CPU, it should only fill the microscopic "cracks". People have this impression that Artic Silver is a fantastic heat conductor, but in fact if you have too much it will hamper the trasnfer of heat between your CPU and HSF. I've done a lot of tests myself with different amounts and definitly with just a little too much my temps start going up siginificantly. Lapping your heat sink (and perhaps even your CPU) can help, but if you don't have the right tools, don't do it because you might actually make the contact worse. Again, the important thing is to maximize the metal to metal contact between your CPU and the HSF, the paste is only there to fill the microscopic "cracks" so that contact is continuous.

No, not ignoring you, I just cain't hear anymore!! :) Really my problem is lack of cash due to the Missus being no longer able to work(heart problems) and I broke my budget...(about 30 bucks total) to grab that noisy fan. I'm slowly financially drowning so I'm stuck at least for a while with the screamer. Once we get some disability money, perhaps by September, I'll be trying to spirit away a little cash. If we don't get the Feds off their butts by September, it's bye-bye internet and cable. The shop where I got the turbo(noisy) fan also had a stealth variant of the same brand/size/model. It's noise level was rated much lower but the air it pushed was about 1/3rd of the turbo. Since the stock 60mm fan was lacking in oomph(sorry, technical term) I didn't want to put on an 80mm fan with the same lack of airflow. dave henrie

Yeah, if a good Heatsink/Fan (you don't need one of those screamers either) isn't keeping it cool then you really must have a case issue or something. Maybe the solution to your problem is a new case? I prefer the Lian-Li cases myself. -Larry "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:oQACa.194$[email hidden]...

Same here. I always run boxed processors with factory fans and heat transfer pads. I've never had a need for that esoteric Arctic Silver stuff, and I've never had overheating problems with Atlon XP's or P4's. Sometimes I think we read too much and out-think ourselves :) I also prefer standard coolers with heat-pads on AMD Processors instead of goop because they tend to cushion the processor core a bit. -Larry "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:pfKCa.1083325$F1.127426@sccrnsc04...
