Panoramic photo of Infineon Raceway and track aesthetics
Tom Pabst shared a panoramic photo of Infineon Raceway taken before the NASCAR race and explained its renaming from Sears Point and its stadium-like redevelopment. Francois Menard called the track ugly and cheap-looking, prompting a long argument with Bruce Kennewell and others about whether appearance matters for a racing circuit. Others listed favourite spectator tracks.

Hi Guys.....
I took this picture last night about 6:30 PM, from atop the hills
overlooking Infineon Raceway. Its from an angle not normally
seen......thought you guys might like to see what the track looks like in
"full-dress" for the NASCAR boys!
www.pabst-racing.com/webscreens/infineon_panorama.jpg
Its a wide photo....so you will need to put your mouse on the photo....then
enlarge it when the "enlarge bug" appears.
Enjoy....

Decent sized hospitality village there in the foreground. The compression
that this photo implies sure does make the track look smaller than its
actual size.

Not only does the "lens compression" tend to shorten up the perspective, but
from the position I took the picture.....you really don't see much of the
track down in the main infield area. Also, this photo shows very well how
SMI has transformed the track into something of a "road course within a
stadium." Five years ago, you would not have been able to even see across
the track to the esses....from where I took this photo last night. There
were hills in-between.....those were all bulldozed down! From just about
any fan seating area, you can now follow a car about 98% around the
track.....almost perfect open line-of-site. There's no place like that any
where else in the world, that I know of......you can't even do that on most
ovals.
I will also tell you guys......this place has now been labeled by the
FIA....as "F1 friendly".....I'm serious. Watch out Indy! Not only is our
weather substantially better in August than Indianapolis, but our
"surrounding attractions" (primarily the Sonoma Wine Country) appeal much
more to those big-bucks F1 people....and the fans that follow them around
the world. San Francisco, is much more of a cosmopolitan city.....than is
Indianapolis, as well. These things play a bigger role than you might
imagine....and the F1 race at Indy is getting somewhat "tired"......if you
know what I mean. Its also possible that a second USA F1 race might be
added to the schedule.....positioning it in conjunction with either the
Montreal or Indy races.....to improve the cash flow of making a two-race
trip to the US continent...instead of two "1-race trips." SMI is very keen
on making something like this happen.....and they have the bucks to pull it
off.
Tom
PS: Shortly after the WC race, the entire track surface is being completely
ground up....and repaved. It couldn't be done before the race, because
there was not enough time to do it......temperature wise, and considering
the other construction still underway.....before the race. That will mean
all new FIA curbing.......and a slick new high-tech macadam compound that
has been tested and approved, by the FIA (but only exist at one other
track....at this time).

The track had been renamed to Infineon Raceway....exactly a year ago
today....was the official public announcement. Infineon (the company) paid
SMI (owners of Sears Point Raceway) $30 million for naming rights....its a

I found down near the hairpin was the best place to see the action. You can
see right in the cars and see the guys working trying to out brake each
other, and then fighting the car as they try to get the power down coming
out of the corner.

Tight, twisty and in a natural bowl, so that at least 75% of the circuit
could be seen from anywhere.
Very popular back in the 60's and even hosted a couple of national titles.
That was in the days when al that separated the spectator from the driver
was a 1" thick timber fence and a couple of feet of grassed verge!
Also Amaroo Park - another Sydney circuit - at which the majority could be
seen from any vantage point.
Amoroo closed a couple of years back, I believe - for a housing development!

Hi Tim....
Well, if you were inside the tent you wouldn't see anything.....but then why
would you be there if you wanted to see the racing? LOL....
Actually, this hospitality area directly below where I took the pictures has
about a 10,000 seat grand stand between it and the track. You just can't
see this area of the Sears terrace seating from the angle I took the
picture. Just above and behind me, is the motorhome parking area for that
hospitality center. Rented RV motorhomes are placed in this area so
corporate VIP's and their guests can actually stay right at the track if
they so desire.
Also, this hospitality area is only one of 8 corporate hospitality centers,
scattered about the track. If you look at the photo, every place that you
see grouping of white tents is one of those hospitality areas (not all of
them have associated RV motorhome parking, however). Each has its own
trackside seating.....as well as the gathering area for food and beverage
functions.

Nice pictures... if only you'd had more overlap they could've been stitched

We had hospitality tickets for Kansas the last 2 years(NAPA tent). It's in
turn 1 so you can see pretty well but we just get a belly full and head to
our seats in the stands.
I'd love to see Sears Point someday but it would be a hell of trip from

Sears Point never looked to me like a real racetrack. It's 1001 changes in
the last decade, the fact that it has multiple courses, the imho ugliness of
the yellow grass patch, it just doesn't make it a real, clean racetrack like
every F1 track on the schedule.
It kinda looks cheap.

So long as they continue to race in Monaco, I don't think passing is really
much of an issue to the F1 crowd. :-) LOL!
I would like to see F1 on Sears err I mean Infineon, just to see how fast
they could lap the place.

The Rock. Deceptively
challengine, multiple grooves, *no blocking*, forgiving of a single
mistake - yet penalizes repeated mistakes (tire wear). That (to me)
is what racing is about.
For race *courses* (read: road racing) I'd have to go with Road
Atlanta. High speed corners, low speed corners, elevation changes,
and nothing resembling a chicane.

What I meant more is that, for today's FIA standards, I don't see a track
like Sears Point to qualify in the aesthetics aspects of the track. Just
compare it to Montral or Suzuka or every other track on the schedule. It's
dirty and ugly. I'm not talking about it's racing qualities, but more
saying that it detriments a little the track.

Franois, I think some of the older guys here will think that all of the
modern F1 circuits don't look like racetracks anymore :)
35 years back, racetracks looked like you describe Sears, or worse, and
honestly, for me, those new, clean F1 style racetracks lack all panache
entirely. It's tracks like Sears which make my heart beat faster :)

Well, there y' go, you see. Somewhat different to what you started with.
Now you're talking about whether the *appearance* is acceptable to the FIA?!
To be honest, I wasn't aware that there was an "aesthetic yardstick" in the
FIA's rulebook, Francois.
Safety, yes; access, yes; public and team facilities, yes.
Beauty? Wow! I can see a new competition emerging at their annual award
ceremony - The Most Beautiful Circuit Of The Year, with sub categories such
as Most Congenial Circuit and Most Photogenic.

Yes, yes very much. The FIA doesn't want a cheap-looking track. Ex : at
Montral, a couple of years ago, the track was severely criticed by them for
the cheap-quality of the grass (if you remember, some drivers who had
off-course excursions had complete patch of grass stuck on their cars). It
was fixed for the next year. They won't accept such things.
There's a reason why tracks like Australia put the big bucks for the
Aesthetic qualities of their tracks. The Sears Point owners just don't
consider it important, and I feel it cheapens the track a little in todays'
standards. Gee can you continue more just trying to find a point over my
posts now and being a smart-ass???????

It would be intersting to see them install a sprinkler system and actually
have green grass planted around the edges of the track instead of the
dirt/yellow grass that is there now. My hat is off to the raceway however
because they have invested and done so much to improve it but their is
definately more they could do like paving the concession areas, more
landscaping, a taller standings pole, make highway 37 a 4 lane road. ;)

But are you SURE that was because the grass was"cheap-looking" or because
the turf was not really the ideal insofar as safety was concerned? I don't
think either the FIA or Bernie would give a damn about whether the grass was
bought at Bill's Bargain Basement or came from the finest stock.
In other words - it wasn't what it LOOKED like but how it performed under
those conditions - with cars skating across the surface.

Oh, I'm sure I can, Francois. Just give me a minute or two....... :)

Both. Trust me there ;)

They require the highest appearance possible but of course they don't expect
the track owners to put in gold leaves instead of grass!! Seriously it's an
important issue. Most of the tracks, even if you check out the CART series,
they don't look as good-looking or modern as the F1 tracks. Sure some
people (and they are right by saying so) will say that the F1 tracks are
bland and have no soul anymore in their perfecticity, but look at them. The
grass is uniform, bright, the tyre on the walls are fresh painted and
lined-up equally, etc... They don't do that for nothing.

Seriously, it's an issue of little worth but, if that's uppermost on the
list of "must haves" with Bernie and/or the FIA, it's just one more reason
to add to my list of Why I Can't Stand Modern F1.
Incidentally, Franois, in your continual and much-admired efforts to
achieve English perfection, allow me to assist:
"Perfecticity", uh-uh. :(
"Perfection", yes. :)

I sometimes invent my own language. Even in French, I on purpose will add
suffixes and prefixes to form derivative words. I have my own reasons to do
such thing.
Like "perfecticity". OE's spelling tool warned me, but I ignored it.

Oh.
Okay then, Franois.
Good luck with the word inventing.
Bruce.

I'm glad they got rid of that stupid building that was blocking the
view of turn 11. I was there in 2002 for the vintage races, in the
midst of their renovation. Almost all the passing takes place at 11/12
but it was blocked by a building! You just watched the cars go in,
hold your breath, and see who comes out the next turn. Looks great
now. The "infield" seating areas seemed like a waste of space, just
like the dragstrip (running for cover).
