Well so far this feels like a giant step backwards from F1 2002. I hate to
say that because I have always been a big fan of ISI products but so far I
cannot get this game to work right. First, the groove does not show up on
any of the tracks I tried. Second, even though I have the detail level on
full for everything the graphics look grainy and dull to me. Third and the
worst part is that even though I am typically seeing steady frame rates in
the 100's the game is jerking every second or so. I had this problem once
on an older machine with F1 2001 but do not have it on this machine with F1
2002. So why has it come back again with F1C? I know some people
experienced this before - the car seems to jerk very slightly at regular
intervals, like it missed a few frames or something. Again, I am getting
high, steady frame rates so I do not think it is graphics. I tried turning
down the number of sound effects and reducing the replay fidelity but the
problem is still there. I turned up the physics rate, no change. I do not
have anything running in the background. Any ideas what the problem might
be?
Thanks,
Hal
P.S. Must say though the physics do appear to be more accurate. I can't go
flat out through Eau Rouge any more! Although I'm sure some of you can. ;o)
Troubleshooting stutter and missing features in F1 Challenge
Haqsau found F1 Challenge 99-02 a step backwards, with stuttering, no racing groove, no reference laps and a quiet traction control sound. Suggestions included turning off Vsync, the skybox setting and background software; Haqsau eventually traced most of the stutter to monitoring and antivirus programs. The thread also debated whether reinstalling ever fixes anything.
Automated summary.

Try turning the record replay function off....turn shadows off (if
available)..check anti aliasing settings.
The graphics, in themselves, should be clear and colourful as they normally
are in the EA F1 series.
Any 'net apps running in the background ? Virus software etc ??

I saw the stuttering online once, but it wasn't a regular thing until I
tried turning off the "used compressed textures" switch in the .PLR file
after seeing the suggestion in the CTD review on BHMS. That made it happen
all the time; switching back to compressed textures stopped it. Perhaps
this is a server-determined option for online?
Also saw what looked like a physics glitch today; ran a few first laps at
the miserable Jr. 'Ring, and trying to take the uphill left-right esses flat
ala F12K2, got sideways and put the front wheels up on the inside curbing.
Guess what; the car rolled. Didn't touch anything other than the curbing,
but it just lifted up and rolled right over. Hmmm; never saw Ralf do that!
Have the replay (250K) and a screen grab (126K) from it.

LOL, I did that too! I rolled several times, too, it was quite
spectacular! Although I didn't lap that track in 2K2, I'm pretty sure I'd
be able to take it flat. I can't in F1C though.

Also, how abt. some particulars on yer system? Stuttering is usually to do
with IRQs and/or sound cards. Well, back in The Day....

in the stutter. I tried "changing weather" with detail maxed out on
everything, and it was totally smooth. F1-2002 often ran better with
Vsync ON, but not F1C. Give it a try if you haven't already.
System:
P4 2.4C
ASUS P4P800 motherboard (865 chipset)
Onboard sound by Analog Devices
512 meg dual channel DDR RAM
128 meg GeForce 4 Ti 4200
80 gig Western Digital WJB80 hard drive
Logitech Momo Racing wheel
Fruit of the Loom socks and underwear
I hasten to add that F1 2002 works flawlessly on this PC, so I doubt that it
is machine related. I have tried to track down differences in the
configuration of the two games but I don't see any other than maybe some of
the detail levels. I did try getting rid of some background daemons, and it
did reduce the stuttering but it did not completely eliminate it. Not sure
why that would make a difference in F1C but not be necessary with F1 2002.
I still don't think this game is set up right. I don't see the groove on
most of the tracks and the telemetry feature is not working right. It will
record telemetry but I cannot view/load the reference lap data. I checked
the directory and the reference laps are there but they do not show up when
trying to load a lap. Or maybe I just forgot how to do it. ;o| Also I
thought they added a sound effect for traction control. I don't hear
anything even when flooring it out of a first gear corner.
Anyway, while I can certainly see where there are some improvements from the
previous games, I am still not enjoying it.

Man, your install must be totally hozed. I didn't catch wether you tried
re-installing or not?
Hmm...I think your install must have gone horribly wrong. I don't suffer
from any of the problems you list. In no way, shape or form is F1C worse
than F12002 (at least on my PC.)

change these first!
I'm having the same problem. It is the same thing that happened to me in
F12002 and F12001
I get high framerates (+70) and then at regular intervals it looks like it
skips a frame or too.
I' ve never found a solution to the problem in the previous versions altough
it disappeared after fiddling with a lot of the gfx settings. Once it is
gone you will never have it back...
Only I can't remember what things I changed....
I do remember a thing it could be related to the fact that the resolution /
refresh rate of the desktop is different to the resolution / refresh rate of
the game....
I'll do some more tests today to make it.. i'll be intouch...

If not a full re-install, then at least vet/repair/replace config and ini
files. But it doesn't sound like yer present install is within limits; more
like something is just plain wrong, altho Vsynch and/or AA and/or aniso can
make a *powerful* diff.
Try turning off telemetry altogether.
Traction control sounds just like it does in the RW: a kind of growl.
Normally, the volume is kinda low. You can adjust it (relative to the
engine sound) in the .plr file. Look for a value of abt. 2.0000 in the
Sound stanza (default is in the mid 1.8s).
You should be able to test the sound theory by turning off the on-board in
the BIOS.
Change yer shorts. I recommend the German Schiesse brand....

Why would the game not work properly on your PC?
Nothing copied from F1 2002. No AA or aniso. Tried increasing the traction
control volume, still nothing. I get a growl but it is during braking, not
during acceleration.
Can you or anyone else just tell me for certain whether you see a reference
lap displayed, with an asterisk next to it, when you go into the telemetry
tool? Not your own laps, but the reference laps that come with the game. I
not only get no such thing, but if I go to a brand new track and pull up the
telemetry tool, instead of seeing the reference lap for the new track I see
the laps from the last track at which I recorded a lap. That is just not
right.

Er..no reference laps come with the game......You'll have to make your own -
no big deal.
If you go into the telemetry without even going out on the track, you'll see
your telemetry from the last track you drove. Again, no big deal since I've
no idea why you'd want to go into the telemetry without having even driven.
Storm in a tea cup here......
a) I have a brand new system and it's possible something is not configured
right.
b) It's a new game and it's possible that other people in their giddiness at
playing the new game have not yet noticed the problems I have mentioned.

Well that sucks, F1 2002 came with reference laps for every track. Some
were better than others, but most were close to realistic lap times. I
found them very useful when trying to learn tracks. But I checked the
directories again and you are correct, there are .dat files in the
appropriate folders but no .lap files. Which again is a downgrade from F1
2002, as far as I am concerned.
As for your second statement, IF the game came with reference laps I would
find it very useful to be able to look at them before trying a new track. I
doubt that any F1 driver just goes out on a track without doing his homework
first.

I guess the scientific explanation is shit happens. :)
While I tend to agree that an experienced user with a well tuned machine
should expect the same problems even after a re-install; why not try just
for the hell of it? If it works just chalk one up for shit happens.

Hm, not be a shithead, but F12k2 ran well on my system and F1C was
causing CTD's and blue screens when I first installed it. The problem
actually was my system, so YMMV.
In my case I actually had to disable most every TSR via msconfig where
I discovered some adware app had been running. Didn't interfere with
any other games strangely enough.

Well okay that is good to know. I have been working my way through trying

eliminating everything that I didn't need only reduced, but did not
completely eliminate, the hitches.

to set again after reinstallation, but as a last resort I might. So far
though most of the problems that I have found have other explanations.
There aren't any reference laps because there aren't, and the TC sound is
there (found it on disk) but was mixed way down and didn't really sound like
I expected. For now I'm just going to keep tweaking and see what happens.
Still don't like the graphics though, I really feel that the lighting and
the reflections were better in F1 2002.

works or it doesn't, no gray areas, black or white, yes or no, 1 or zero,

that's bullshit. The same input can have 2 (or more) different results, and
two (or more) totally different inputs can have exactly the same result.
Supposedly identical computers can be as dissimilar as WW II B-17s or 1960s
Ferraris (which not only often had different wheelbases, the same car often
had different wheelbases ON EACH SIDE!). Computers can have peronalities
(good or bad). They can even be haunted.
I learned from Alison Hine never to believe Windows' ironclad error
messages. I watched her calmly ignore fatal errors that would have reduced
me to tears and re-try the same install routines a dozen times, only to have
it announce "Success!" the 13th time. "How did you know to keep on trying?"
I asked Alison (who's programming experience goes back to pre-Jurassic
languages like Fortran and Valdocs). She just smiled. "Instinct," she
said. So much for digital absolutism, Aristotlean logic, Kuhnian paradigm
shifts, Sir Francis Bacon and The Scientific Method.

The traction control sound is completely unmissable in this game. Have you
been to a GP? The sound is so true to real-life that it hurts. Again, the
only possible explanation is that something is wrong with your install.
This seems a real shame because you're missing a real treat.
Actually I am pretty convinced, now that I have had some time to fool with
it, that there is nothing wrong with my install, or my ears for that matter.
Go to the Audio\Vehicle subdirectory and play external_tc.wav followed by
internal_tc.wav. The external_tc.wav sounds like what I am used to hearing
on broadcasts, but the internal_tc.wav of course does not. Did you really
think it did? I don't, but it shouldn't and it makes sense now. The latter
is what I am hearing in the game, albeit at a low level because it appears
to be coming (appropriately) out of my rear speakers. So I can scratch one
more "problem" off the list. ;o) Starting to really enjoy it now. Just
did a 10% race with the AI at the mini-Nurb and had a blast, in spite of the
track. Starting to see what all the excitement is about. :o)

Actually my desktop and all my games are at 1024x768x32, but even so frankly
I have not seen that make a difference in any DX game published in the last
three years or so. That's an old problem, mostly with older OpenGL games, I
don't think it really happens any more.

It kind of sounds like they were going for muffled in-car sounds to simulate
what the driver actually hears in his helmet with ear-plugs etc. I like
it - seems to sound appropriate. Nothing different should be coming from
your rear speakers since this game is designed for stereo only - although it
might have pro-logic encoding or something I guess.....
I'm quite happy with the game in general though the tracks could be better,
but hopefully with this being the last F1 game from ISI, people might be
motivated to release some 3rd party track improvements.

The stuttering happens on my machine, and it's caused by the variable
weather. Something about the new cloud texture being loaded causes many
seconds of this bizarre jerkiness. In variable weather, the cloud texture
changes quite a bit. This doesn't happen on all machines though for some
reason. The solution for me was to turn off variable weather - I dislike the
rain effects in F1C because I was spoilt by GP4 so it's no drama really.

You can't turn it off in the career mode afaik :-/

I have been using dry weather only. I think it is really a bandwidth issue
and that can happen for numerous reasons. In my case I was able to get rid
of it almost entirely by getting rid of ASUS' PC Probe software and turning
off my antivirus software. The annoying thing though is that F1 2002
doesn't require that, even when playing at the same detail level. I used to
have that problem with F1 2002 in Windows 98 but it went away when I got XP.
Plus I have a much higher spec PC now than I did when I was playing F1 2002
under Windows 98. Oh well, I have nearly got it licked now, I'm not too
concerned about it any more.

I think i read that setting the sky box number in the PLR file from whatever
it is to 1 will reduce (get rid of?) the problem, but ive never seen the
problem myself
Yeah, but the sky texture changes even in dry conditions too. You need to
tell the game not to dynamically change the sky texture. There's a skybox
variable in the PLR file you need to change to 1.
But if you've sorted it by other means then keep the skies changing! It
looks cool :)

machines of exactly the same hardware and I can almost gaurantee at least
one will have it's own personality and problems, usually more.

The sky box thing is a good trick to know but I don't think it relates to
the problem I was having. Seems like that would affect the game just about
everywhere, but the hesitations I was having happened when going through a
turn that brough a different part of the track into view. Same thing in F1
2002 under Win98. I think it has to read a whole lot of new textures and
triangles when you do that and if you don't have enough bandwidth it will
thrash. Thing is, I have a 2.4 ghz proc, 800 mhz fsb, dual channel PC 3200
RAM, and 4X AGP. If that isn't enough bandwidth what is? Finally realized
that there were some things that I loaded recently that could be affecting
it, and got rid of them. Seemed to help. Still don't know why F1 2002 was
fine with those things though.
