Douglas Ellison's F1 Challenge bug list

Douglas Ellison listed minor F1 Challenge 99-02 bugs, such as replay views, the traction control sound and hidden controller settings. Others called it nitpicking or offered player-file fixes. The thread moved on to rain and drying-line visibility, which turned out to depend on graphics drivers and color depth.

-After replay - play continues in the view last used in the reaplay. Should continue in the view last used BEFORE the replay. -TC noise is triggering at every gear change - it shouldnt. -Too many hidden controller parameters. An advanced controller menu and / or readme is necessary - preferably with presets for common controllers. Any more suggestions. Probably a waste of time but perhaps ISI might pick up on some of these. Tracks / AI / Netcode - not worth bothering about. They've not had the attention they deserve in 5 releases - they're sure as hell not going to get it in a patch! Doug

Has there ever been an EA racing sim that didn't torture the hardcore with niggles? You want to love them, but you spend more time tweaking the ini files and discussing future, hoped for patches than actually playing the damn things. Papyrus sweats the details a lot better; their sims are better 'thought through'. IMHO.

If thats all the so called bugs you can mention then I think its nit picking! I wouldnt call any of those particularly damaging to the game. I of course could mention faults like in the commentary Schumacher is often mentioned as being behind of just in front of you when he isnt. Also you stop dead on the line after the race. Also theres no save function mid race - which is really annoying. Not only that but theres no save function at all whilst during the race weekend which is a little ludicrous if you want to try and play the game realistically. Also theres no safety car. The wet effects are rather lame in terms of the track looks dry all the time whether dry or raining. A great shame is that the replays are only available for the portion of the race you are playing in, it would have been really nice to have watched the rest of the race you crashed out of (GP3 did this well). Theres also very little feedback for the replays like car order and times etc which could do with really expanding. Finally the mechanical breakdowns seem to be rather lame and Ive still to see a really big engine blow out yet. Probably because the replay facility if so difficult to work with - its a real shame the game doesnt have a 'smart' replay facility where the camera jumps automatically to any accidents or exciting moments - just like on TV. I for one would be more than happy if they just upgraded the wet track effects and worked on the replay facility a bit. But I want to say for the record that despite all the items mentioned above its still a brilliant game and wipes the floor with any other racing game period. I love the graphics, the forcefeedback, the stability of the game (rare these days), the feeling of speed and dynamics, the pitstops, and the flexibility of the driving experience. -- Nigel 'Nats' Stutt [email hidden] "Its life, Jim, but not as we know it." As I said - i could mention the crappy tracks, the appauling AI, the shit Replays, the still sub-standard netcode - but they're NOT things that a patch will fix. > But I want to say for the record that despite all the items mentionedabove > its still a brilliant game and wipes the floor with any other racing game > period. Ouch. I hate and despise Nascars - but NR2k3 is far and away a better title Doug

You don't love them? Signed, Confused

As soon as their physics come up to ISI's level, people will drop ISI games like a bad habbit.

An advanced controller menu and /or > readme is necessary - preferably with presets for common controllers. None of them are essential to play the game properly. Putting them in the menus would only cause newbies more distress. Most of the plr file options are self-explanatory for any sim-racer with half a brain. If you're not smart enough to make a few simple edits to a text file than you've got no hope of driving an F1 car.

The >wet effects are rather lame in terms of the track looks dry all the time >whether dry or raining Yeah, that's a drag. I ran a race where I practiced and qualified in the dry. On the grid for the start, when I hit the throttle I promptly went spinning across the field. I thought I'd hit the wrong button or something. It took me a couple of seconds to realize that it was now raining. I'll *guess* that the game said that somewhere, but I just missed it. And as the race went on(50% race), I was able to push more in some areas of the track. Drying line? I dunno - it certainly wasn't *visibly* apparent... :-( Eldred -- Help find missing child: Tatianna Ashley Chillcutt from Michigan(info on my homepage) Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

I dunno what settings you're using, but the drying line is pretty obvious on my system... Jason

I'm probably running a lower detail setting than you so I can squeeze 30fps out of my system. But still, that's something that seems fairly important to be able to see. Can you see when it's raining as well(can you see the raindrops)? Like I said, the car felt better, but I couldn't see ANY difference on the track... I'll have to kick everything all the way up at least once just to see what it looks like. I've seen people reporting that the problem with not seeing the line (either dry or wet) might be a driver issue. Jason

Stupid question maybe, but if you see all black in the mirrors is it possible you are just looking at your tires? There is a setting somewhere that determines if your own car is visible in the mirrors, maybe you need to make sure that is off. 16-bit. I don't even have an OPTION to run 32-bit. 24-bit is the highest on my system... Eldred -- Help find missing child: Tatianna Ashley Chillcutt from Michigan(info on my homepage) Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.
