F1C - needs IE :-(

F1 Challenge installer requires Internet Explorer

A buyer objected that the F1 Challenge 99-02 installer demanded a newer version of Internet Explorer, at least 5.5, which was not listed in the requirements. The thread became a browser debate covering Mozilla, Opera, web standards and whether Internet Explorer can be removed from Windows.

Just picked up F1C, trying to install it but I required a later version of IE. WTF? That's not on the minimum spec. Anyone know how to install this without installing more IE stuff? Reg hack.. setup switch etc. What's the minimum IE version required? - if I have to do this..:-( -- cheers SteveL (clear the weather to reply)

I have no idea what version of IE is needed or why, but if you haven't upgraded to 6 yet, you really should anyway. Andrew.

If I used IE maybe... but I've never used IE on this machine..(or my last) Mozilla and opera only. Just don't like EA forcing me to install software I don't want, and don't need. D/l GTR at the moment anyway..might as well play some N2k3 while i'm waiting. cheers

I mean, I can understand the whole anti-microsoft bit... but, if websites don't work in Mozilla, why use it? Do they all work in IE? I'm using IE 6, and I haven't had a single website not work... It's a free browser, and security patches are put out for it all the time. But yeah, that EA thing about having to have IE6 is pretty silly, although I'm sure there's some reason for it that we don't know about. I think IE6 is part of XP's SP1? Maybe F1C needs SP1 installed.. I've had a few games that needed SP1.. GTA:VC comes to mind.. Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com <aep@nospam writeme.com> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I prefer Mozilla as it's faster, quicker, and the tab system is very veyr usefull. It's not just an Anti Microsoft thing - in the same way Open Office isnt an anti-microsoft thing -it's just.. well... FREE and has no paperclip. Doug

Once upon a time, some clever folks sat down and decided some basic rules for what kind of code and stuff you were supposed to be able to use in HTML, it was called a "standard", these people, or their replacements, meet every so often to update these standards as web browsers and their plug ins evolve, and most browsers adhere to these standards, as to most tools for making HTML pages Then along comes MS and says, "standards, we don't need to stinking standards, we're big and powerful enough to make our own standards", and so they did, to complement their own web browser they made their own HTML tool called "FrontPage" I don't share BG's vision that just because his company is the biggest and baddest they should be the ones laying down the rules and everyone else can tag along or be left in the dust, besides, Opera is so much better than IE will most likely ever be and it would work on 100% of all sites if people who made web pages would actually stick to standards laid down for such pages, Opera, as well as several other browsers follow these standards and web pages made to these standards work flawlessly in all of these browsers, most of which has better functionality than IE, Opera for instance has a built in pop up killer which can be configured to your tastes and uses less resources than IE, loads pages faster, has a wind/rewind function for quickly going back and forth between several pages as well as better functionality for using without a mouse Without diversity and competition there's no/little progress Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

The popup killer in Opera is quite good.. I totally agree. I also agree about the competition thing, it's definately healthy for everything. My main point was the XP SP1 thing anyways.. My friend who in my opinion is a God at DHTML related work (php, javascript, java, etc...) said that he was having so much problems with other browsers incompatibility that he didn't even bother coding for other browsers and just made his page compatible with IE instead of changing code around for it to work with other browsers. And knowing this guy, I'm pretty sure these problems weren't from sloppy coding or anything.. FWIW, he recently redid his main site to work with more browsers.. you can check it here: http://schillmania.com but some of the projects don't work with other browsers. IE does *not* render HTML properly. Andrew.

First of all get rid of IE and install some decent browser like Firebird, then continue to install F1C (it wasn't required for an install on my machine, running loss98se) HTH, Uwe -- mail replies to Uwe at schuerkamp dot de ( yahoo address is spambox) Uwe Schuerkamp //////////////////////////// http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (52.0N/8.5E) GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61

Actually you can, unless you're concerned with the legal aspects of it, Win98Lite runs just fine without IE installed :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

is that with XP only? I remember some utilities for older windows versions which remove IE from the system (or so the authors claim). That would surely be yet another reason *not* to "upgrade" to XP IMHO if IE removal is not possible anymore. What is the big deal about having to remove it? Nobody is forcing you to use it for browsing. Andrew.

Easy, so they can add shortcuts to thier website to your favorites list. I am not sure buy during the install you should be able to tell it not to add the shortcuts. That may or may not allow you to install without IE 6. IE is integrated into windows 98 and up, if you are using any windows OS 98 or newer you "must" have IE installed, and six is worth having. If you are not using windows as your OS, then IE will not be intrusive and you can have it on your system the same as any other program and just not use it, make sure your browser of choice is set as the default and bury IE in some deep dark folder for use only as an installer enhancement. :-) -- McWhom -----------------------------------------------------------------

Basically it has everything Opera has (popup blocker, tabs, url alias, mouse gestures etc). And it's really small, 400k zipped. You don't need to install, just unzip and run. It basically uses the IE engine. So you have all the function of Opera/Mozilla but the compatibility of IE. Oh did I meantion it's free too :)
