Help! I just installed my new video card (a Radeon 9700 (non-pro))
and reinstalled Windows XP Pro fresh.
Now, after installing F1 2002, I run it, set the AA to 2x or 4x (at
different times of course), but there is no change in image quality.
Image quality is always at minimum. I know it's minimum because when
I had my old video card in the machine and ran this game, I could see
a major difference in the guardrail shots etc. when I turned on AA and
Anis. Filtering.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Why won't my new Radeon 9700
improve my picture quality? It's driving me nuts. Here are my basic
specs.
My system is a 1.8 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, AGP 4x, Radeon 9700 (non-pro
version). I have installed the Catalyst 3.5 drivers. In-game display
options are at the "Full" setting.
Thank you,
SkykingUSA

AF settings don't work... I've only seen one workaround and it's a pain in
the ass. I'm likely rolling back to Cat 3.2 as there weren't any major
gameplay improvements for me with 3.4 or 3.5
D.
I don't have two monitors hooked up, but my system does see two display
adapters (both RAMDACs I suppose) in device manager. I only use one
monitor. Should I disable the other display adapter in Device Manager?
Should I try the 3.2 Catalyst drivers? I don't think I would want to go
back from 3.5.

Thank you for the info. I may try it, who knows.
Do you know if there is a significant performance difference between
3.2 and 3.5? Also, do you know if 3.2 ran Return to Castle
Wolfenstein and Unreal and Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 3?
I'm going to go look for the 3.2 drivers on ATI's web site just in
case I feel brave.

Bill
Sorry, I don't know about these games. Maybe try and ask
over in alt.comp.periphs.videocards.ati.

The issue referred to earlier should only affect systems for which both
monitors were enabled. Try this though to see if you're affected. Turn off
AA and AF and run the 3dConfig. Note the triangle rate. Now, bump AA and
AF up to their respective maxes and run the test again. If you don't see
any change, I'll post the instructions for manually setting AA and AF.
Also, if your old card was an nVidia, make sure -everything- is cleaned out.
People have reported problems with upgrades when bits and pieces got left
behind.
Alan
I did have an nVidia card, but I just switched computers 2 days ago to
get a faster processor, etc. so I reinstalled Windows fresh - there
are no "left-overs". Also, when I change the AA and AF settings in
the 3Dconfig app, I do see a triangle rate change in that app.
However, I would be interested to see the "manual settings" anyhow.
Could you post them please?
Thanks,
SkykingUSA

You likely aren't experiencing this problem then. Otherwise, the 3DConfig
wouldn't change with your Control Panel settings. In any case, here are the
instructions I put up at the Rage3D forums.
1. Set your desired settings in the ATI CP.
2. Open up the registry and go to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video.
3. Find the two entries for the 9700 Pro. They can be identified by
expanding the key, going to "0000," and checking for a string value named
"Catalyst_Version." You may have multiple ones, including several for the
currently installed Cat ver. Unfortunately, these entries are not cleaned
out with an uninstall and new ones are created when you reinstall. If that's
the case, see the instructions below to determine which two to use.
4. Of the two relevant entries, one will have two string values for AF,
AnisoDegree AnisoType, and two for AA, AntiAlias and AntiAliasSamples.
Duplicate these four values in the other key.
5. Reboot.
If you have multiple ATI keys, go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\Desktop.
The two long keys should match two of the keys in the other location.
In my case, the values I created have to be manually modified and the system
rebooted everytime I want to change them. If you're having the same problem,
you'll likely have to do the same.
As for values, these are for OpenGL but likely are the same for Direct3D.
They're in the "000" key and are named the same except for the "OGL" prefix.
All may not apply, and I'm too lazy to check. :)
OGLEnableKTXBufferRegion - 0: Disable/1:Enable
OGLForceZBufferDepth - 0/16/24
OGLWaitVerticalSync - 0:Always Off/1/2/3:Always On
OGLEnableFastFullSceneAA - 0 (don't know what this is)
OGLFullSceneAAScale - 0:App Pref/2/4/6
OGLMaxAnisotropy - 0:App Pref/2/4/8/16
OGLLODBias (Mipmap in CP) - 3:High Perf/2/1/0:High Qual
OGLTextureOpt (Texture Pref in CP) - see OGLLODBias
OGLTruformMode - 0:Off/1:App Pref
OGLAnisoType - 0:App Pref/1:Performance/2:Quality
In F12002, what's your Image Quality setting at? I found that anything
lower than High was pretty bad.
