FYI, the Beta 0.99 version of netKar is due to be released on July 14, 2003. There's not much talk here in the R.A.S. newsgroup about netKar, but it is a real gem, physics-wise, and I'm surprised it hasn't generated more discussion. The Beta 0.99 version will feature online multiplayer support, and that, combined with the awesome physics modeling by Kunos, should help make netKar a GPL-caliber classic (IMO). Here was the announcement posted by Schummy1 on the Racesim Central netKar forum: netKar 0.9.
Time's up! It's a long story but it would be wise to read it as it's important. The famous 0.9.9 version is ready but it has to be considered as a BETA version. For the last weeks we have tried to resolve two very serious problems:
Supra.dll file missing
Server list Unfortunately none of this problems has being solved. Supra has being eliminated by this 0.9.9 BETA because Stefano didn't find the necessary time to fix it. That's because of his new job and moving to Japan that really upset his life. Server list problem: Our dedicated server should have hosted the server list (similar to VROC) but it hasn't yet arrived. That's why yesterday night me and Aris tried to verify the function of the server list in our computers. Unfortunately there was nothing to do. By error the server list program has hard coded inside it an IP number that points to a fixed site and cannot be modified now without kunos help. We will still try to search for a solution till Monday, but we can't promise much. The host game server also seems to suffer from some problems regarding the number of clients and can't be fixed for the moment. All said and done, we ask you to have a little more patience and please forgive us for all this delay. You must consider this as a BETA version We won't see Version 1.0 (or whatever the name is going to be) before October, wishing that Stefano finds the time and will to work again with us. We tried everything we could but that's all we can deliver. The 0.9.9 "namie" BETA is going to be published on Monday 14 July evening time CET. This because if we wanted to resolve all problems the release date had to be delayed more until September or even further. We hope that you will appreciate the fact that we WANT you to play with this version and that is what pushed us to release the non perfect 0.9.9 We thank you in advance and we ask you to wait until 14 July for the release Thank you _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Luca Casarotto AKA Schummy1 [email hidden] News & Factory, Forum's Administrator DrivingItalia.NET www.drivingitalia.net
And here is the netKar Multiplayer tutoral as posted on the Racesim Central netKar forum by Aristotelis:
Ok friends. Odd, Live for Speed has set its release date as the week of July 14th. Coincidence? Anyhow, I've tried both and would have to give the edge to LFS. LFS just feels better and has superb support and multiplayer. Alanb

For me netkar, together with N2003 and perhaps F1C gives the most believable driving experience on a PC today. The whole philosphy of netkar was to make driving on a PC as realistic as possible with no compromises. LFS is not bad, but especially the tyre model isn't en par with netkar - make a couple of laps with netkar's modena and then change to LFS turbo and you'll see ;-) Of course it's not as polished (and still in development) as the commercial sims, but hey it's an one-man-spare-time project!
I keep repeating it : Netkar is the best sim ever ! Period. "jbodin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

That is indeed an opinion you are welcome to. I find it interesting but totally unrewarding and moving from the Modena in netkar to the Modena in GTR2002( or 360C) shows how far that netkar has to go yet. AD
You're comparing a street spec car to a racecar, so even if they got the same names the handling is a lot different, don't forget that... The only thing I dont like about this game is that I have a terrible time judging my speed approaching a corner, so i usually dont make it. When I get my car under control its great fun.

Hehe! :-D Er, are you referring to assimilation by DX9, or by netKar, Steve? I finally broke down and installe DX9 just so I could check out netKar -- I enjoyed LFS, but Racer was a bit of a disappointment. I checked around to make sure that DX9 wouldn't mess up my performance with GPL or any other sims, and then I went ahead and bit the bullet. I haven't noticed any gains with DX9, but at least I haven't seen any degradation in performance anywhere, either. That said, I'm enjoying the heck out of netKar -- it was worth installing DX9 just to get my hands on this delightful little gem. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend that you do so immediately. ;-) TTYL! -- JCB

Assimilation by The Bill, of course - not to be confused with The Borg, who are just amateurs. But I never had any problems with DX9 here either, even on my retro 98SE OS... ;-) Yup; Netkar is a lovely piece of work, and amazing considering the source. No team of coders, just one guy with talent and vision. Seems that's how all good and true things come into being initially. But with Stefano's move to Japan, it looks like the true VROC-style multiplayer everyone's been hoping for will have to wait a bit. Too bad; the Formula Renaults promise some great drafting battles. But heck; I'm still happy to wait for RL, so I surely don't mind waiting for NK too. As long as they get something going by the end of bike-racing season this Fall! ;-) SB (though I must admit I'm a bit anxious to try Papy's take on Trans Am cars...)

That said, anyone who puts so much reliance on Windows not to fail is asking for trouble. I wouldn't use MSWindows without a disk-image backup program if you paid me.
