I very disappointed with the performace and the image quailty of the FX5900
256meg Ultra card. I could not
get it to run or look anywhere near as good as my 9800Pro. I sent it back
the next day, not worth $500.00 bucks. I had high hopes for this card, I
have always
been a big NVIDA guy, but ATI is really putting a hurt on them right now.
GeForce FX 5900 Ultra disappoints versus Radeon 9800
A poster returned an Nvidia FX 5900 Ultra after finding it slower and worse-looking than his Radeon 9800 Pro. Replies questioned why he bought it and debated whether anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are worth the frame-rate cost, with several saying FSAA greatly improves fences and distant cars in racing sims.

My question is a bit off topic from your off topic post but why would anyone
with a 9800 pro buy a $500 FX5900 Ultra?

I know what you mean, almost ordered a 5900 ultra too to replace the 9800
pro, I'll leave it now I think.

Maybe he never even bought a 5900 and is really an ATI employee
spreading propoanda so we will buy the 9800pro and pass on the 5900.
<shifts eyes left and right>
Maybe not, but maybe so. I could see either company resorting to such
tactics. I'm not buying either myself, not at those prices anyway.
ATI employee or not, I think he's right regarding one aspect though. The
ATI's image quality when Aniso and 4xFSAA are enabled, is considerably
better than that of any Nvidia card.

FSAA and Aniso is great for people who have slow CPUs. It gives the
graphics card something to do while it's waiting for the CPU
I beg to differ :-) I find both quite useful, especially since ATI has
implemented both very well.

Aniso? What the heck is that?
Andre

Yep, those are two options I never use. Except anisio in European Air
War makes the game look *much* better. But in most games it is just
not needed and I won't trade eye candy for speed.

lol! no, no it was Anzio ;-)

Interesting. For me fsaa is the most amazing advance in hardware in
years. I happily lose fps for the improved image quality, which adds
greatly to the immersion IMO.

what i find totally gobsmacking is that people get faster and faster graphic
cards every year but still cant be satisfied.
every year since invention people have said they cant wait until they can
use AA and Anis on max.
well the obvious conclusion is that it will never ever be used.
crazy...

Not to mention that with a decent gfx card, you're not giving up all
that much speed in the first place, at least not speed that you'll
notice that much

I see the benefits of FSAA the most. The tracks in most games have
chain link fencing around them, and I absolutely hate the shimmering
effect those produce without FSAA. As you say it adds a lot to the
immersion.

How does it add to the immersion? That's like something Papadonkey
would say. You look at the screen and say, " wow look how smooth the
edges are!" when you are racing at Monaco? I'm too busy racing to
notice whether the car in front of me has jagged edges or not. That's
immersion.

I find jaggy pixels on small objects (perhaps cars ahead in this case) a
real distraction. Worse though is the texture shimmering on things like
fences, and decent antialiasing can banish this altogether. Nvidia
suck at it, ATI nearly manage it, and 3dfx did a better job but it
didn't help them much, sadly.... probably because people like me waited
until the cards were 99ukp instead of 250!

That's because sometimes Pierre is right. Just keep him off politics and
gun legislation and he can be a disturbingly decent human being.... when
he *wants* to be. I think that's the critical part :-)

Maybe my eyesight's better than yours? ;-) Seriously, I understand what
you're saying, and maybe this is another indicator of what a rubbish
driver I am. But for me good fsaa adds to the experience in any gaming
environment, especially flight sims, which is all that matters.

Ah, so you are familiar with the great one. I used to get along with
him very well at one time but since he found out I'm a socialist it's
just not the same. :-) I'm the one who changes names continually and
used to troll PD on a frequent basis. He fell for it everytime too.

I'm not *entirely* sure that's something to be proud of, but everyone
should have a hobby I suppose.
