It's fantastic
Is netKar the new GPL?
A poster declared the free netKar 0.99 'the new GPL', and Damien Smith agreed, praising the F360, Mini and Supra physics. Many others, including Jason Moyer and Andrew MacPherson, admired it as a one-man effort but found the handling unconvincing compared with GPL, LFS and NR2003. The thread was notable for one reply that was accidentally posted dozens of times.
Automated summary.
Damn straight it is! Unfortunately the message isn't getting through to
people though. The multiplayer servers are still very quiet indeed. Any
voluteers to supply a RASkar dedicated server?! : )

I was thinking maybe some people were put off by the earlier betas which had
slightly dodgy physics??

I guess the release of lfs at about the same time is taking up people's time
atm. It is for me. And the IoM, and the Brab ;-)
I'll try netkar as soon as I can though.
Malc.
I know it's the new GPL. I knew it since the first beta !
However... I can't seem to drive in multiplayer.
I add an IP, I see the server appear in the list. I connect.... no prob so
far...
But when I clickon 'race', I see myself in the pit or on the track with the
'syncing' message mid screen...
I know this is supposed to be normal and I know it should go away after a
couple of secs or even a minute,
but on my pc it doesn't...
And I'm not talking 1 server here... I've tried at least 20... with the same
result everytime...
Also interesting : on the left hand side there's a red bar... fully
topped...
I also know that you have to be careful when you run a firewall...
However I've opened port 6000 as it should be...
Any suggestions ?
Thx in advance guys...

I've never played it. So this post will be probing for information...
Are there leagues for it? What is the TSW split axis compatability like?
How many tracks are in it? How many cars are in it? Are there many cars
close in speeds, or does everyone have to drive the same car to have a
competitive race? If not, I saw some info about skinning...if you get a
skin for your car, do other people online automatically download the skin
and see you driving a car with your paintjob? Looking through some
screenshots, I saw what looked to be street cars (fast, but still made for
the street). Is this a racing sim, or a fast cars on a race track sim (sort
of like those Ferrari clubs where the rich guys come to a track and drive
around in single file)? I trust the physics are good, what about system
requirements?
I'm sure I could find a lot of this stuff in various locations on the
internet, but I'd rather have an experienced racer help me out.
I look forward to the answers and am downloading the game just in case the
answers are good.

PS Hi Bruce!
You know what I like about NetKar?
1-Its free
2-No Installation, just unzip in a directory and run
3-Its free
4-Runs great on my 1.6 AMD, 64MB GF2MX @ 1024x768 resolution

You forgot to mention that it's free :D
oh yeah, the physics are pretty sweet too. I always forget about the cold
tires at the beginning and plough through the first corner.
If anyone hasn't tried it yet, it's well worth the download

Netkar- which I find an unfortunate name for an auto sim- is, IMO, a
work in progress. It's still a bit unfinished for my taste;
undeveloped damage model, limited cameras, arduous multiplayer,
graphics that fall short of a well-modded version of GPL- the
cockpits, in particluar, contribute nothing to the immersion factor.
Is there any pitting? Not sure about that. Nevertheless, an
outstanding production by what appears to be a single programmer and a
couple of buds.
Verdict: an update or two away from prime time.

Are the physics less dodgy now?
I certainly commend Stefano's efforts, but there's nothing in 0.99
that makes me want to suddenly dedicate hours of my life being good at
it. I eagerly await version 1.0 but in the meantime I'd much rather
stick to sims that give me a convincing sensation of speed, grip, and
weight transfer, which I just don't get at all from netkar presently.
It's an incredible bit of coding and it's free but that's about as far
as I'm willing to go with praising it at this time.

I'd second that. I checked it out again today and NetKar really is an
amazing piece of work for one guy, there's no doubt about that. And it's
certainly a *great* advert for a job in the industry (assuming he'd want
one :-). But with GPL, N2003 & LFS-S1 all fighting for my limited track
time at the moment, NetKar struggles to engage me.
The Supra sounds great though!

I'll give the mini another go. I mostly tried the F3000/Mini/F360 and
wasn't impressed at all, especially having driven a Cooper S pretty
hard recently (the mini challenge mod is pretty convincing imho, after
doing the real thing). The F3000 was by the far the weakest of the
cars I tried. I'll try a few more laps in the mini/f360 and maybe
I'll be more into it.
Jason
It felt wrong to me when I tried it about a month ago, I don't know if it
has been changed since or not though. Granted, I only gave one car a single
lap around one track and then uninstalled it.
Gotta give full props to the fact that it's free though.. I will definately
try again with multiplayer.

<shakes head> GPL felt horribly wrong to me after one lap. Download 0.99,

I would agree, it does take a good few laps to get into. I actually quite
like the F3000 (that other people were saying they didn't like) and the F
Renault.

The FOV is different (fairly narrow by default - hence the low feeling of
speed) The FF is different - particularly from Papy games. etc so yeah, it
takes a bit of getting used to, but it felt completely natural to me after a
few laps. The tracks don't have the sophisticated bumps like ISI stuff but
they're as good as the GPL track modelling.

Last night I gave this a go at Falkenberg for the first time and I must
confess I had rather more fun than in any of the other cars. It
certainly engaged me more than F12002 did. Mind you, I only bought that
for the GTR mod.
I think in the other cars I'm not completely convinced by what happens
when the car loses grip. In the F3000 when I lose grip I expect to be
punished very badly indeed... and I am. Everything happens so fast I
don't have time to worry about whether something feels wrong or not :-)

think it's a stunning achievement, but in relation to other programs
my disbelief remains unsuspended, and I didn't really feel any notion
of driving.
Compared to most cars replicated in sims a Ferrari 360's power/weight
is a mite weedy, but compared to what most of us drive every day it's
quite beast. It feels wierd to manhandle it in a horrific manner and
for not very much to actually happen in terms of a response from the
car.
Good work, but for now at least I will stick to GTR, GPL etc

Hmmm. I found the Ferrari pretty dull too, compared to, say, the MG. I am
sure a real 360 doesn't feel dull!
There is such variation in the handling of the cars that I have an
optimistic view that a good balance could be found with further work.
GPL still rules for me (and still looks the best with all the add-ons over
time). For me the "real physics" developments prove to me that a computer
sim needs some degree of fantasy to work. I don't believe for a minute I
could make multiple minor corrections mid bend as I can in GPL. However, it
provides that sensation of fighting the car as we see in onboard shots of
the pros doing it.
To create a computer sim without the benefit of the feel of physical forces
a degree of fudging is probably required. I think the fudge factor is the
black art...
Cheers

Sorry, I expressed myself badly - that's exactly the point I was
trying to make. I drive a BMW day-to-day, and a Ferrari should roast
that. However the Ferrari in Netkar felt more like a sleeping foal
than a prancing horse.
Let's face it, nothing in a sim can ever be "real" - it is after all
just a computer faking the responses of a car. However I think that as
much of the feeling of "realism" is down to the playtesting, tweaking
and "feel" of the programmers, equally as it is to the accuracy of the
physics engine.
In my field one of the key issues is "nanotopography", which is, if
you like, the "roughness of the roughness" - for example a road has
certain pattern of grooves and tarmac - so does a tire. Then too the
grooves of the tire also have tiny features to them, as does each part
of the road. These constantly interact, and are a part of the driving
feeling. Then take the wind gusts to the same level, engine
responsiveness, flies on the windscreen smearing as you try to clean
them off with a quick blast of the wipers :-)
No sim can ever model that, so to capture the realism comes down not
to modelling those aspects, but to the programmers, testers etc
capturing the essence of what is being simulated in such a manner as
to translate it accurately into how their audience (market?) sees the
same subject.
Not to talk about GPL again (sorry!), but that's what I feel they
captured superbly. Netkar really fails on this count for me - I can't
imagine a Ferrari 360 would feel so flat. For 100,000 I would REALLY
want more for my money! :-0

John

This may well be true. This morning I found myself alternating between
LFS & NetKar trying to work out why NetKar didn't feel quite right. In
the end I found myself feeling unsettled by both, but when I hopped back
into GPL for a few laps I found my sim-ometer was immediately
recalibrated. For whatever reason (including no doubt blind prejudice!)
GPL still manages to hit the simulation sweet spot in a way others
struggle to.
It's probably not fair to compare them though, and part of me worries
that I'm doing modern sims a great disservice by even comparing them to
the GPL experience. But then I do tend to worry to much about most
things instead of just getting on with Having An Opinion :-)

PS I think one of my problems in LFS & NetKar is the temptation to try
another car instead of sticking to one and studying the driving
experience.

That's the problem isn't it. For me it just doesn't pass the gut
reaction test no matter how hard I might want it to.

It's like we are playing 2 totally different sims - LFS drives me to
sleep, and I just spend another hour in the 360 on the Nordschleife,
at 24:00 with the lights on and ABS off.
I don't think I'll sleep tonight because of the adrealine rush :)
I don't know what causes these different interpretations of the
feeling you get in a sim - I know I found F1 2002 quite poor untill I
played it on a faster PC - suddenly the feeling was there and I loved
it. Maybe PC settings / type of wheel and ff you have / sound
surrounding etc can make or break the feeling in a sim..
Andre
Very well put, in another thread i mention it's silly people are sill
seeing GPL as the pinacle of sims where as the physics engine has been
surpassed, if not by netkar and LFS than surely N2003.
I luve LFS,netkar and N2003....but neither of those gives me the same
buzz as GPL did.
I'm actually rather annoyed at times by the 'it's not GPL'
whiners...but if i look deep in my heart they do have a point.
In terms of sheer sim enjoyment it still has to be beaten in my book
aswell.
There has only been one thing that really got my heart going recently,
after i got a bargain bin copy of F12002...dismissed it as
crap....then downloaded GTR2002 and got blown away by how good that
godly mod was.
I got all the nascar sims since papy started doing them...i bought
LFS....i have netkar...and although all give me a certain joy
sometimes close to GPL none of them come close to the feeling i got
when i started driving GTR2002.
I know it has it's shortcomings, like low speed grip(not as bad as in
GPL though) but boy is that mod one giant hoot to drive, the ferrari
550 is truely amazing.
If you've never tried this one i suggest to give it a go, although
multi isn't even close to papy's multi it's still ok with a few people
with decent connections.
And since i know you from the good ol flanker days i'm pretty sure
you'll love it...
Cheers,
Willem.
hint....think clint eastwood movie.

Agreed. I had quite a few problems with it (frame rate for a start, and
getting my Momo to work with it properly) and didn't get round to
re-installing after I messed about with my PC upgrade a while back. I
really must get round to finding out which CD I burned the DLs to!

I was particularly fond of the Marcos. Not because it drives
particularly well (not in my hands anyway) but because it's the best sim
engine sound since the GPL Ferrari IMO.

I wondered if it was *that* Willem when I saw you post a few days ago...
it looked like your writing style anyway! Hi :-)
Andrew McP
netKar is the new 1967 F1 simulator developed by Papyrus and released by
Sierra?
Must have missed that... <g>

Aye - another possibility is that I drive like a putz, not having
raced a sim for a while :-) It's very sad racing online and spinning
down to last place every other lap!
Still, I'll give Netkar etc another go at some point - there certainly
seems enough of a fan-base for them both to convince me there's
something there worth looking for.
