RaceSimCentral LFS S1 review and car unlocking

A link to RaceSimCentral's review of Live for Speed S1 prompted discussion of its points system for unlocking faster cars. EldredP objected to having to earn content he had paid for, while others said it took about an hour, recommended short pro races, and argued it kept inexperienced drivers out of the fastest cars online.

Under both online and single player, you accumulate points for finishing in the top 3. These points are used to unlock the more advanced cars, but don't be too disheartened by this, bear in mind this is an Online Racing Simulator, the points system ensures that new or inexperienced racers don't get the hands on something too quick, too early. It's also a crafty way of maintaining a progressive learning curve for drivers. Experienced sim racers will have their hands on all the cars within a relatively short time frame." I hate games that make you 'unlock' the cars. If I paid for the game, give me ALL the cars, dammit... If I hadn't forked out real money for the S1 release I'd not have bothered building up the points. The basic cars aren't very entertaining IMO. They demonstrate the working code well, and they were interesting enough for a while in the initial demo, but that was *forever* ago. Andrew McP

Yeah, any cheats in LFS to get to the better cars? This FWD crap is annoying! Larry "Four furry fiends" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bfrvju$n8b$[email hidden]... > Heheh, "patience, for the Jedi it is time to eat as well" or somethinglike

Sure, not a big deal for you. I also watched you lap Silverstone 10 seconds per lap faster than me. Imagine if you had to break the 8:30 mark at the Ring in the Eagle in order to unlock the Ferrari and Lotus. Some of us STILL wouldn't be able to access those two cars. Maybe, but if you can't access all the cars, you're not getting all the game you've PAID for. I have Gran Tourismo for the PS1. I can't win the races at the "b" level(whatever the highest is). Therefore, there are 3 or 4 cars that I can't use. That's bull, IMO. You should be able to race every car in the game on every track in the game. Whether or not you could control said combo isn't relevant... Sigh, you'd never make it in the racing game industry. I bet you even believe that the game should be about racing, rather than stuffing in more "Gameplay". ;) - Matt

The better your results the more points you get, but you can get them in on-line races too, so as long as you finish 3rd or higher, you'll get the points sooner or later. Considering your reputation for finishing races, I would think you should be able to get the points as quickly as the next chap on-line, and the AI really aren't that hard to beat as long as you don't crash. If it's as rigid as LFS, I think it's a bad idea, but if it's as fluid as GT, I think it's brilliant, because you can tune up a car you do own to race better cars in the same category. The rules aren't so rigid. It's the same with story based FPS games. If you get stuck on Half-Life, you're stuck completely because it's 100% linear, but if you get stuck on Deus Ex, you can take care of a secondary objective and find a way around the problem. It's all about the implementation, not the concept.
It takes 1 hour to get all the cars unlocked... and thats one hour of seat time some kidz need VERY badly before they can select the LX6 in an online race :) You won't find the LX6 any fun before you have had a few hours in the other cars anyway. The developers actually wanted a lower credit level needed, while a lot of the betatesters voted for a much highter threshold, in the end I think we found a good compromise. Pick a 3 lap race at the shortest track, place in the top 3 to accumulate credits and after a few repeats you will be able to select the RB4... after that you will have no difficulty getting the rest of the points needed to unlock the LX6. Please try it and I'm sure you will agree it was not any problem at all ;) Mikkel EldredP <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

The rules aren't so rigid. I got so frustrated with GT that I haven't played it in several months. In a solid weekend(friday - sunday) of playing, I was not able to win the championship that would allow me to access the best cars. We're talking several hours each day. Couldn't do it, got pissed off, it's collecting dust now. Ah, so it's like collecting experience points in Diablo 2? Ok, well that's a *little* better. I still disagree with that in principle, though. No Eldred, it's not even close to being that hard! Really.. just try it and you'll see. The AI is kind of a pushover. At least on the settings I used - 'Quick', which I believe is one step below 'Pro'. I do agree with you. I've never liked the "unlock" concept; a carry-over from console games. I'm just saying that it's not so bad as it might seem.

Why a 3 lapper, I went for a 1 lapper worked much quicker. Now I have got into the 200 pts i'm more relaxed about hitting the 2 top cars. Winning a 3-lap pro race is the shortest race that gets you the 'full' 48 points. 1 or 2 lap races will get you the points very nearly as quickly, but if you just want to get the points to unlock the cars (and who can blame you ;-)) there isn't any advantage to doing longer races. I started out with some 10 lap races thinking I was getting 12 points per lap for a win, but quickly realised that it wasn't the quickest way to get the points, although it probably is the best way to learn the track /and/ earn points at the same time. I think you get 1 point for winning a drag race too. I tried a couple to see if it was an easier way to get points (it only takes a few seconds to do a run) but it didn't seem like it, and 600 drag races would have been a pretty boring way to get the points ;-) Malc.

Mind you, it didn't help the kid I met this morning who kept causing no end of trouble in a car he clearly couldn't handle. ME: "You might want to learn to drive that LX m8" Muppet: "Can you drive the LX Andrew?" ME: "Not well." Muppet: "Then shut up!" Well, that's me told then! I love a reasoned debate, it's why I enjoy the flight-sim group so much :-) To be fair though, what did I expect racing on a Saturday morning? Hardly prime time for old gits like me. Andrew McP
