Planning the first RASF1 race at Hockenheim

Nick organised details for the first RASF1 race in F1 Challenge 99-02 at Hockenheim, covering race length, aids and the F1rst connection client. Members debated banning stability control, tyre and fuel multipliers and dry weather, compared lap times, swapped controller and setup tips and sorted out confusion over the race day.

Okay, this weekend is going to be our first RASF1 race, and I thought I'd start up a thread with details for people. Maybe we can get an idea of how many people can attend, and if there are any clashes for a particular driver. All of this stuff below is just me winging it a bit, so if you don't agree, reply. I'm just making this up as I go along <g> Rules We need to decide race distance, tyre and fuel multipliers. I think the practice servers were running at 7x tyres, 5x fuel or something like that? We'll have to decide soon <g> Aids All aids are allowed, except invulnerability. Circuit The new Hockenheimring as raced in 2002 (and 2003, natch). There are plenty of run-off areas around the track, so I think we ought to decide what we can and can't use. Generally I would say that you can use any tarmac available to you, with a few exceptions. Please try to keep to the circuit. Don't cut the corner apexes. In F1C this isn't so much of a problem as F1 2002 was, but lets try and have a clean first race, eh? These turn numbers are for the major turns (the FIA numbers and F1C numbers are different). T1(R) Nordkurve Fast, but be careful on the start. If you want to run wide during the race onto the tarmac out there, you can, I reckon. The grass-crete ends on the left of the s/f straight just as you brake, so make sure you're not feet dirty coming in here. T2(R)/3(L) Einfahrt parabolica Could be hairy on L1 <g>. Not really much else to say here. If you want to defend your line, make an early move to the inside (this applies everywhere). We are racing online and lag is a problem. T4(R) Spitzkehre (Hairpin) Nothing much to note. The problem might be blocking around the, er, Hochgeschwindigkeits (parabolica), but we'll have to wait and see. T5(R)/6(L) It's very easy to run across the tarmac on the inside here if you screw up. The game doesn't punish you if you rejoin before T7, so if you do cut across, it would be nice and gentlemanly of you to redress any gains you made on racers around you ;-) T8(R) This suffers from some wildly inaccurate (and punishing) kerbs. Hitting the inside kerb will push you out, and hitting the outside kerb is okay until you try and get off the damn thing, which is difficult to do without spinning. Safer to straddle the kerb to the end and then drive off. T13(R)/14(R) Sudkurve You can run off the circuit at the bottom here if you like. They do in real life. I'm running 1:22.5's as a best laptime, I think, race setup. Usually more like 1:25's in amongst the AI. That's in my Sauber, with a conservative setup (ie comfortable). I've done 74 laps, apparently. Time I believe we agreed on noon EST, which is 5pm UK time, 6pm Europe (that's my maths, DO NOT trust those times <g>). Be careful when following other cars. In F1C the rear wings seem to be stuck on the cars with the chief mechanics' chewing gum. Any impact around the rear of the car will see a rear wing fly off, even a soft sideways impact on a rear wheel. Strange, but we have to live with it. It means that people aren't going to be best pleased with a punt up the backside, so be careful under braking. A loss of front wing just makes the car annoying to drive, whereas a rear wing loss means it's almost impossible to even crawl back to the pits. Lets all make this, the inaugural [sp?] race of RASF1 a pretty decent race... tempting fate ;-) Nick
If there's any spaces, I'd like to book one. Don't mind about car or driver. I have raced with RASCAR before. Aids are fine, but I would highly recommend disallowing stability control - it give a very unfair advantage and allows people to throw the car around corners faster than any alien and with gay abandon. All of the 'ridiculous' times set for F1 2002 on the EA site were done with stability control turned on.

I'd be even happier without clutch assistance, but I would concede that if stability/ABS/etc are banned. Also, I must have missed it. We're racing noon on Saturday? What's the IP of the server? Are we using F1rst or can you direct connect? Is there a RAS F1 website? Are we going to have any actual rules? What about the server car? Points? Pitbabes? Forza Minardi. Anyone care to share their times for 02 hock? I've gotten the Minardi into the 19's but I've got a feeling I should be doing 16's or 17's. WR on f1rst is a 1:21 but that's not a particularly reliable source. So far I've noticed a few general things: Turn 1 - As long as you don't brake and stay in a fairly high gear to keep your speed up, it seems like you can totally arse the line without having a huge affect on laptimes. The runoff on the outside of the turn is solid and WIIIIIDE so you have a ton of time to gather up the car if you're pushing too hard. If you do push too hard, the time you gain from carrying extra speed down the straight seems to be pretty much nullified by taking a crap line. Turn 2 - With high downforce you can brake way beyond the AI's groove, all the way up to if not past the 50 marker, and still have plenty of grip left to make the next complex. After turn 2 the right hander opens up fairly quickly so you can get on the gas hard. With a decent setup you should be flat coming out of turn 3 and through turn 4. Turn 5 - Er, this is a straight. Gas. Turn 6 - Hairpin - I've done everything I can to carry speed through this corner and I've come to the conclusion that it's useless. A tight car will kill your laptimes here, and a loose car (basically one that works everywhere else) will spin off if you try to push it too hard. Best time through here is braking early and hard at the 100 marker and cutting the kerb as much as possible, using a little throttle to push out to the exit kerb then hard on the gas down the straight. Turn 7 is fast. Very fast. I do a quick lift at the 50, aim for the right hand kerb, and gas it hard all the way through turn 8 towards turn 9. Turn 9 looks faster than it is. I've found the best line is to brake hard when the kerb ends on the right, use as much kerb as possible at the apex, and gas it hard while still trying to keep left since it's a short straight. Turn 10 - Er, basically a short straight. Turn 11 - Still working on the approach to this. Seems a slight tap of the brakes or a lift will give a similar speed through here. A tough corner to get right as you can't use more than the edge of either kerb due to their shape. You want speed coming out of it but more importantly you want to stay off the exit kerb because taking too much of it is like driving in a deep rut. Turns 12-17 - Classic stadium section. Not much to say, altho you can take a good chunk of it flat out since you're running more downforce than you would on the old hockenheim ring. Turn 12 seems to like hard braking and early apex, I'm finding late braking will cause uncontrollable push whereas early braking will you get you lined up nicely and fully on the throttle the entire corner.Turn 16 has a nice flat extended kerb that screams "ride me", and will keep your speed up without throwing you into the paved runoff, while 17 has a tiny strip along the exit that you can ride if you take it too hard. I'm going to bed now, when I wake up I'll post a 1:19.850 replay in the Minardi, and do some more work on getting that down and post the setup. I'm a wimp/horrible driver so the car is probably too pushy/stable for most people, but you might like it too. Jason

I'm using stability control(low), and my PB is only 1:29 - 10 seconds off the times you guys are posting. Either it doesn't give as much advantage as you think, or it doesn't work on my car... But, if I turned it off, I wouldn't even be able to complete two laps in a row... Np Jan. Just a couple of things: 1. As a thicky euro, I take it this is the same time as the RASCAR race (not a problem if so - just wanted to be sure) 2. 'Join using F1rst' - could you clarify. I've followed the threads and made sure I've done a NoCD update and tested joining some open races but I'm not sure what this phrase means. 3. Will (can) the server force all cars to be of equal performance and, if so, which particular car's performance will they be set to? Err .. that's three, not a couple ;) Thanks again for the generosity Jan - I appreciate it. BTW, if anyone out there involved in RasF1 objects to me taking the Jag for this race please chip in and say so - not looking to offend anyone. You want to try altering the wheel toe in values if you have an unstable car setup. Ive found that by altering them both to about +30 adds a lot of stability to your car. Also try reducing radiator and brake duct sizes which can increase your straight line speed as long as you dont overheat! -- Nigel 'Nats' Stutt [email hidden] "Its life, Jim, but not as we know it." Why the accelerated tire and fuel usage? Seems like we will end up spending more time in the pits than they do in a full length real life race. What fun is that? Also what weather will be used? I have to put in a plea here for all the races to be dry weather. It's bad enough to have to develop a qual and race setup but if I also have to develop various wet weather setups I am never going to have time to learn the track. Grrr... Still scratching around in the 1:21's... Question for you guys: what is your min speed through the second hairpin? I'm down in the 40's (kph) and sometimes lower. The circuit map shows that I should be getting 70 kph through here. I'm pretty sure this is where I'm losing the most time. Everywhere else on the track my speeds are at or higher than the circuit map shows. But to get back to the original help/hint....if you use 50% steering with zero speed sensitivity, then you may find the car really wants to wander at high speeds...especially with FF wheels. If you have trouble with this, reduce the STEERING LOCK which is in the individual setups. The default steering lock is 20 degrees. You can probably find a very comfortable zone somewhere between 14 degrees and 18 degrees. Only at tracks like Monaco might you need 20 or more degrees to zip around those tight turns. dave henrie

You're forcing clients to use the same blip/lift settings as the server, not actually forcing them to use auto-blip or lift. Same thing with physics rate - if the server is setup with high-frequency physics, clients can still connect with half-rate physics unless you force it using that line. Essentially you can have drivers running completely different physics models, which kinda sucks. Jason
Like the file says i don't understand why you would want to run the extra HAT samples (unless you have some monster machine...my P3 700 is not real a monster), but the super high rate physics are great. I was playing around with my files last night and with the high physics the ffb feels much more certain, hard to explain other than saying the little nuances come through..i also spin off much less...i think my pb in the RH2003 McLaren with the comparable track patch is in the low 1:18's...almost a second quicker than when i was running half rate physics, i'm sure some of it is just experience, but i've also gotten it down to using a modified TC value of 0.55 and no other aides. My complaint about any sim is i don't feel like i'm actually driving a car, but rather a car in a game, but with enough tweaking this may be the best I've felt (would be nice to see that transam papy mod) I'm not in the league, but i really would highly recommend the super high physics, even on my P3 700 it's playable with decent graphics settings (thanks mostly in part to a GF4200). jonathan

Get your controllers straightened out as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, it makes a huge difference. The other thing that made a big difference for me, but may or may not help you, is that I watch the AI a lot during test sessions to get an idea where the braking points, apexes, etc. are. I would still be in the 1:30's if I didn't do that, for example there is just no way that I would have figured out how fast the stadium section is on my own. I drive the track for a few laps so I know where everything is, then park it and use the plus key to move through the TV cockpit cams for the different AI drivers. Make sure you have their strength turned up so they are running realistic lap times. "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

But with a 40% race and 5x fuel usage you will be in the pits twice as much as the real guys for the same fuel loads. That's not realistic. Since you can't travel twice as fast each pit stop is going to cost you proportionately more of the race than it would in real life. Why not run 2x or 3x fuel usage instead? That would give you close to the right proportions. As I understand, it treats individual sections of tire independently instead of part of a single contact patch. Both of these things combined are essentially the difference between nudging the edge of a kerb while following the ideal racing line or driving the exact same line and having your car tossed through the air. Seems kinda lame, but eh well. Really I guess forcing those options isn't a big deal since not using them is a disadvantage in any case that I can think of. Jason

Really? I stopped trusting the AI to learn with GPL. Totally unrealistic for humans to drive the same way... What should the strength be set to? I have the AI set to 75% at the moment. Fuel on the other hand, I dunno. I'd use 1x regardless, as you might want to take a pitstop anyway at some tracks, depending on the speed difference between a full and half tank of fuel. The fuel load affects the handling so much in an F1 car that I find even 2x tends to throw my balance off. 4x or 7x is just nuts, as you're going from half a tank of gas to 0 in a 3 lap qual session. I ran a 50% race last night (against the AI) using normal fuel use & tyre wear. On lap 30 of 33, just as my front brakes failed, the front tyres had about 60% wear remaining (as shown by the bars on the LCD display) and the rears 70, the car felt terrible. Anything below 70% seems to make a big difference to handling. I vote for normal wear for 100% races and 2X for half length. I must remember to fit bigger brake ducts for the race ;) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers>
Hi Ian, thanks for the help there :) I picked up the program and have done some laps. Due to no multiplayer in any previous F1 sim - this is the first modern F1 sim I've tried since GP2. I am mortified to find that I'm piddling around Hockenheim in the 22s at best. This is not just off the pace this is off the planet :( As I'm not keen on getting entirely embarrassed on Sunday, are there any hints/tips/replays/setups/telemetry/prayers you can suggest that might help me drag my sorry ass into the real world? Bit of a cheek I know so if you're too busy not a problem. I was going to email this begging letter but don't have an email address available from any of our boards ;) Regards "Ian P" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:28gWa.51512$[email hidden]...

Neil, you can mail me at my spamtrap address, I'll reply with a real mail address. [email hidden] You're welcome to my replays and setups. I don't check telemetry or anything though, but a prayer to the simgods usually pays dividends ;) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers>
Thx Ian - I'll do that :) "Ian P" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:IZMWa.53768$[email hidden]... [snip]

Well they are good to a point. At Hockenheim humans are still going faster, but if I set the AI strength to 100% then by the end of a test session most of the AI are doing 1:19's. That's realistic for the Minardi's, not so realistic for the others. I'm hesitant to turn up the strength any higher because I think the physics might get unrealistic above 100%. Anyway, they are running faster than you or I, and that means we can learn something from them. Their lines are pretty good; when watching the real life qualifying this morning I only noticed 2 serious differences between what the real life drivers were doing and what the AI were doing. The real life drivers take a wider line around turn 2 than the AI and the real life drivers seem to be able to go flat out into turn 7. Other than that they seem to drive the same way the AI do. The turn 2 thing I'm going to try next time I get a chance, but the turn 7 thing I think may have to do with track inaccuracy, I doubt that it is possible in the game. Also, I think I had to set Locked Pit Cam="0" in the [ Game Options ] section of the player file in order to watch from the pits. You can watch from the menus but you can't see as much detail. What I like to do is actually start my test session so that I have a full screen window and then use "+" and "-" to jump around to the different AI cars. You can use the PgUp, Home, etc. keys to change views. I usually watch from the TV cockpit view first because from there you can see their speed and gear choices, which makes it easier to determine where they are getting on the brakes. This also allows me to see turn-in, apex, etc. in a view that is close to the player cockpit view. Then after I feel like I understand what they are doing I usually switch to swing-man view (PgUp?) and use the numeric keypad to adjust it to a view slightly behind and above the car so I can see how much of the track they are using. Some of you probably know this, but, just FYI(a little too late for your race) , everybody, there's an updated version that's a little bit closer to the real track out there, for Hummerich's 2003 carset. There's no kink after the hairpin for example, and more tarmac runoffs. T1 is still a bit off, but slightly better and the grass looks like radioactive snot for some reason, but for my offline hotlapping I found it more satisfying preparing for the GP tomorrow. http://spider.m4driving.sm/TantraRH03Updates.htm
