RASF1 Hockenheim online race report and data rate settings

Participants in the RAS F1 Challenge league race at Hockenheim posted their accounts, with Ian P reporting pole and several drivers praising the full-grid online experience. Organiser Eldred apologised for start problems after drivers dropped out unnoticed. The thread then turned to warping and invisible cars, with recommendations to use forced data rates of around 14 for F1 Challenge hosting.

At the start, I was planning to sit on the grid, switch to the server, and get rid of that car. I didn't expect for anyone to be BEHIND me with my 1:40 qual time. But on the grid, I saw differently. So, I decided to pull MY car off the track, then switch to the server, then switch back. After I pulled off the track, I mistakenly hit ESC...end of race for me. Dammit - I just can't BUY a break. Oh well, I can watch the Brickyard 400 now... Lost one place at the start. And then I just started following, waiting for an error. At one time I tought he left me room to pass... I was wrong, spun and lost some places. Quickly regained a couple until I came behind a ferrari which was a lot slower, but kept blocking me al the time. I made a brake error, just before pit entry, lost my rear wing, quickly entered pitlane but when I excited I spun immediately. I noticed that my rear suspension was out of shape so I gave up. It is definetly no LFS quality online game... You always have to keep a buffer between you and person in front...That way the racing is not as exciting, just waiting for driver errors. Jimster
My race went pretty well, started 7th, made it up to 4th, and pretty much kept it. On the pit stop I regained a ton of time going towards the 79kph line on the guy who was in front and behind me. Had a great pit stop and made it out well ahead of both. I'm going to post a tutorial later today on how to NOT have your thumb up your rear playing in F1...Most were good but a few just had no clue what was going on. Oh, and I did have a wierd error, Ian and Neil's car were both INVICIBLE to me...that made things interesting. -Stuart Becktell "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > At the start, I was planning to sit on the grid, switch to the server, andget > rid of that car. You got some awesomely bad luck lately Eldred - it'll change. Thanks for setting this thing up. In terms of online, 'it ain't no GPL' but it worked and with a full grid. That was the most enjoyable online experience I've had in ages - I've been yearning for an online modern open-wheel sim for ages. This'll do the business. Congratulations to Josh and Ian. Particular thanks to Ian who helped me out with some tips/setups/replays - it made all the difference. I looped it a couple of times but I think I'll stick with no aids as the lap times were otherwise very consistent and I like the challenge. Regarding the time to log in, I was aware I'd never raced this thing online before - or even used F1rst. I therefore did some dummy joining runs earlier today and was sitting in F1rst five minutes early in case of a connection problem. More than 5 mins would help for sure but people have also got to take responsibility on themselves. Great fun - can't wait for the next one :) "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > At the start, I was planning to sit on the grid, switch to the server, andget > rid of that car. I think I was the only Ferrari and I sure didnt *block* anyone that Im aware of (maybe Ginger but he wasnt pushing me that harrd). I knew I wasnt anywhere near the top guys speed as such I would have pulled over without hesitation. In fact I dont even recall being anywhere near you. I don't consider one or two corners behind someone blocking thats for sure. I was just cruisin trying to stay on the track, if you wrecked don't blame me take responsibilty yourself, jeez. Remember some of us havent run ANY online F1 races before so there will be a learning curve. Last time I pitted in a F1 sim was around 92-93' in WCGP :-) Mitch "Jimster" <[email hidden]> wrote > I was out pretty fast too... Lost one place at the start. I thought I gave enough warning about the 5 minute thing, and I also thought that 5 minutes(actually about 7-8) would be enough for everyone to get situated. I hadn't counted on people *leaving* after they connected. Since F1C doesn't give any 'disconnect' messages, I didn't realize that they'd gone. Bottom line...I fucked up. Again, apologies to those caught out, especially Ped Xing. He's the guy who allowed me to even DO this... Anyway - lesson learned. Next race, people will have at least 15 minutes to join. If people don't mind waiting longer, we'll make it 30 minutes. Anyone know how to get F1rst to set 30 minutes practice automatically? Just wanted to say that it is difficult to judge how close you can be behind anyone. With some people I could run pretty close, others made me clear it was better to leave more distances between. It makes it difficult to plan any overtaking action, because it is not always sure whether someone is moving over to let you pass or simply makes an slight error... It is just the nature of the game....and I'll have to live with that Jimster (btw it happened while you just had a fight with a williams. Had followed your fight for 2 laps before I overtook the williams and later on I came close to you on 2 occasions when you ran slightly wide... Third time I was surprised by an early brake manoeuver and was off track in the rail...)

I think the invisibility may have been due to data rates, I seem to recall someone having a data rate of 32 while someone else had a 0 rate. Eldred, could you possibly set fixed data rates for next race ? I believe 14 is about the usual. As for the race, I had a really good run, qualified on pole with a 1:16.9xx. I ran a 1 stop strategy, pitted on lap 18 with a 30ish second lead, came out with about 12 secs lead. Over the next few laps I pulled the lead out to about 16 secs, then disaster struck with 3 laps to go. The Sparks BAR ran wide in the stadium section and came back onto the track sideways directly in front of me, result one front wing lost :( From then on I was a sitting duck to a storming drive from Josh ( I forget the rest of the name, sorry) and had to settle for second. Great drive and congrats on the inaugural RASF1 race win :) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers>

Good golly yes...you ALL should have fixed data rates of very low speed. 56k or a data rate of 10 to 12 was the norm in the F1 2k2 multi. So EVERYONE, including the host, should be fixed at a low rate. With 56k you will see the cars jitter slightly in sharp turns but the rest of racing should be acceptable. btw..how many racers finally got connected? dave henrie

Hey Jim. I just watched the replay and if its the exit of the last turn entering the stadium area I was actually pulling over for you and you just happened to make the inside manouvre at the same instant. I actually thought it was warp. Heck I thought it was still Ginger directly behind me, he was still there after so I wasnt sure what actually happened. These mirrors on these things (with adv head physics) is difficult to even see a car behind let alone know whom it is. Whats the next race? I ran 12 at the last race with a cable modem, I changed it to 14 per Ian's thoughts, what should I run it too? I had run a race with 6 people with different people and had no problems whatsoever. This time, it seemed like almost everyone was warping a lot. "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I think it should be set for "forced data rates" with the client and host rates set to 14, that's what most people are using for F1C. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spammers>

Hmm... Ok, that doesn't explain the invisiblity that a couple of drivers faced. I'll try another race test. Look for it in about 5 minutes - let's see how many drivers can connect and race.
