I am the proud owner of F12002 and personally I love it. It really brings
out the racer in me when I'm doing a 20-lapper of Silverstone or Nurburgring
against ten other guys I don't know who are just as eager to shove me off
the track and claim the win for themselves :)
I bought F1C, the "successor" to F12002, today. Perhaps it's just me, but I
was extremely disappointed with the game. I did a Test Run on Silverstone
just to see how it was, and I found the following:
1. Engine sounds seem very, very muted compared to F1 2002.
2. I noticed I now have to brake going into Stowe and the last turn in the
Becketts complex where previously I could lift the gas and cruise through on
F1 2002. I'm not sure which version of the game is right/wrong/whatever, but
it's annoying. :(
3. My Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP (Red) seems to have a 0.3 second
delay between me inputting a command (turning, braking, etc.) and it being
done in the game, whereas I didn't have this problem with F1 2002.
My system is well above the recommended standards for both games
(2.53GHz/1GigRAM/G4Ti4600) yet I'm feeling really dissatisfied with F1C so
far in comparison to F12002.
I'm just looking for discussions here. If you feel the same way or you want
to persuade me that F1C is better, I'm willing to listen to both, but at
this moment in time I feel like I'm going to bring the game back to the
store.
Cheers,
J.R.
F1 2002 owner disappointed by F1 Challenge 99-02 handling
A fan of EA's F1 2002 bought F1 Challenge 99-02 cheaply and found it harder to drive. Others said F1C's physics were more realistic and rewarded proper setups, and Mitch_A gained several seconds after following Heppie's setup guide and using a shared setup. Links to setup guides and Doug Arnao's GTR physics guide were shared.
Automated summary.

Thank you, that's fixed, which is something I guess :/

I too found the same thing, however in reverse. I had driven Grand Prix
Legends first and then F1C and they seemed very similar in physics and
realism. I suppose this is because Doug Arnao had his hands in both. I'm
used to and like that loose feeling. If burping the throttle too soon in a
turn spins you, then I'm happy. I love wheel and throttle response. : ) To
me, F12K2 is too tight and in my opinion arcadish in it's feel. The only bad
thing that I see at the moment for F1C is that not many of the excellent
mods that came out for F12K2 are available for it. Also, I believe that the
community burned out with it. I prefer F12002 for that reason. For driving
realism and challenge, I prefer F1C.

The only bad thing that I see at the moment for
The mods for F1 C will come, the physics are 'probably' better or more
realistic in F1 C so if you can't do something in C that you could in 2k2,
then I would guess that should be a good thing. The online capability for
C should also be better although I have found a few issues already. Most
tracks right now are being released for both C and 2k2, but more and more
you will see the C tracks either released first or somebody having to hack
the C track to enable it for 2k2.
Once the modders get a handle on the increased physics options, and once
they enable some of the hidden features, like onboard starters and variable
track enviroment lighting, then I think the difference between C and 2k2
will really begin to be evident.
The real question about F1 C is how much did you pay for it...All over
the country the price had dropped to $19 <USA dollars> so if you paid
more...try and take it back...then re-buy it elswhere at the new low price.

good advice from this group on how to fix some things, I stuck with it, and
now I not only do not play F1 2002 I don't even play any of the F1 2002 mods
any more. It's just really good once you get it set up and working
properly. Primary differences are that the physics are much more
true-to-life now, and the setups are quite a bit different than before. The
tire model has more traction but is somewhat less forgiving, and the
downforce has been reduced significantly. You will have to actually take
turns at realistic speeds now. Also the setups are just not right for me.
They may be very fast in Doug Arnao's hands, but I'm no Doug Arnao. So I
had to spend some time learning realistic lines and cornering speeds, and I
had to work up my own setups before I really felt comfortable with it. But
now I love it and hardly play any other sims.
Regarding the engine sounds being muted, which view do you drive from? It
sounds fine in the cockpit view, but is perhaps a bit muted from the TV
cockpit view. Also there are player file tweaks to turn up the traction
control sound, if you are so inclined.

After driving my own setups for the last couple months, I tried going
back to the defaults and it was incredibly odd. I couldn't do half a
lap without feeling nauseous from all the suspension travel and/or
looping the car a dozen times.
Jason
Hey it's only 19.95. What were you expecting over 2002?

Well, I'm a slowbie, so my setups are a.) tight b.) stable c.) tight
d.) tight and e.) tight. If you can deal with that then you're
welcome to them, I'll try and whip something up for Hungary (haven't
even done a lap yet, but I use basically the same setup everywhere
with minor tweaks).
Jason
I'd appreciate it, thanks! I like the idea of a universal stable setup for
sure, I really dont know where to start so a baseline setup should do the
trick. Thanks bud.

If you want universal setups why dont you just start with the default grip setups for each circuit?

It must be me :) I can get consistent 1.22's using the default Hungary
setup but obviously this isnt going to cut it competing against 1.16's. My
thinking is a "better" baseline setup than default would at least give me
something to compare to the defaults.
On another F1 note can anyone point me in a direction for a F1C setup guide?

Thats what I needed six. I had just given up even getting near a curb :)
This guide helped me knock over 2 secs off my PB in just a few laps (didnt
realize how bad the default setups actually are till now). Now I can tweak
and have an idea what Im doing. The one place this guide fails though is in
the dampers. Any help on what the different damps do on the track?
Thanks

Arnao's GTR physics guide, it's a .pdf file that has a short but very

Ferrari.
BTW I pulled or was sent a setup (info overload) but I believe its Ian test
setup. Anyway within 10 laps I hit 1.18 (before today pb was 1.22+). OMFG
I cant believe how nice it drives at these speeds. Now I have something
to work with.
Thanks so much guys!

I did a dozen laps in the Minardi with my default seutp and am getting
near 1:19. I'll actually sit down and figure out the line and tweak
it some and post it tommorrow. The left hand part of the chicane is
ridiculous kerb-wise, I may actually have to tweak the dampers so it's
rideable (I have the car setup to be pushy as hell on kerbs so when
you hit one that's that obnoxious it tends to throw the car straight
which doesn't seem to be a good idea at that particular turn).
