Blaster worm hits Windows PCs and Mac versus PC banter

Members compared notes on the August 2003 Blaster worm, which exploited a Windows DCOM flaw rather than email, and shared Symantec's removal tool. Many recommended routers and firewalls. Ruud Dingemans's boasts about Mac immunity led to a lengthy Mac-versus-PC exchange, including mention that NR2003 had a Mac OS X version.

Umm...yea, it has nothing to do with outlook express. It uses an explotation in DCOM to create a remote connection on port 4444, then downloads some software onto your computer. -Stuart Becktell <aep@nospam writeme.com> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Tue, 12 Aug 2003 19:49:24 GMT, "Colin Harris" > <[email hidden]> wrote: > > >Apparently it all expleded at aroun 6pm GMT (1pm ET) yesterday...I gotit, I > >know 3 others who did - anyone in here? > > > No, I don't go near Outhouse Express. > > Andrew.

Yup, plus if your Mac is down it doesn't even matter since you weren't running anything on it anyway :) "Ruud Dingemans" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bhbocs$ili$[email hidden]...

heck, I'm a WinTel guy.. and I have "Hands On" Mac experience... I put my hands on and around the last mac guys puter who was preaching aplle crap, and promptly threw it out the window.... after he had said something along the lines of " my apple would never crash like windows does..." well he was wrong, the window and the mac both crashed :) Blaine

($ 10 for such an oldie - like the IICI - and $ 3 for an old Ethernet card will buy you an almost unhackable and virus-resistant little server/router/firewall. Very cheap and VERY safe, relatively speaking. The US Army used something like this for www.army.mil a while ago and afaik it's still on the air ;) Regards, Rudy

Well like I said in my previous message: what's wrong with NR2003? I love it when Windows people say "yeah, mine's been infected... lost data... AGAIN" ;) <grin> Don't worry though, I've got a Repentium for comparison (to run GPL on) as well... (Actually, that's probably the thing about Windows and Mac people. Whether they want to or not - usually, they don't, but hey, that's life - Mac users will always have some hands-on Windows knowledge -- (from their job, local institutions, pc-using neighbours, pre-Mac days etc).
