Project Gotham Racing 2 capped at 30fps petition

Damien Smith urged readers to sign a petition against Project Gotham Racing 2 being locked at 30fps, and argued angrily with those who said they did not care. The thread drifted into vinyl versus CD audio. Steve Simpson noted that the developers said physics and controller input would still run at 60Hz, and Racer developer Ruud van Gaal discussed decoupling input polling from frame rate.

The creators say they'll be locking the game at 30fps despite the fact the original ran at 60fps and most other quality console racers like Gran Turismo 3,4 etc run at 60fps. Don't let it happen. Petition here. http://www.petitiononline.com/pgr260/petition.html (Please no lame, ignorant replies saying that 30fps is more than adequate)

Petition? Just dont buy it. Not that hard is it? Doug
> OK, so if GPL2 was annouced and was to be locked at 10fps, you'd just say > 'Oh well' and not buy it? >10 FPS ? I wouldn't download it for that ;) Really, why did you suddenly switch from 30 FPS to 10 ? I believe GPL is locked at something like 36 FPS and that's fine. Stable framerates are possibly more important than fluctuating "fast" framerates. I know if you're getting 60-70 fps at a particular track in Nascar 2003, your frame rate will occasionally flicker down into the 30's and the change is very noticeable. It's not so bad to have a constant FPS, especially in multiplayer.

Project Gotham ran at a **constant** 60fps, as does Gran Turismo 3, as does F355 Challenge on Dreamcast. 36fps is playable but it's not good or even fine. It's like comparing Vinyl to CD, FM to AM etc. etc. - there's always people who just don't get it. :-\

Basically they're going to be using a ridiculously high number of polygons for the cars. GTR 2002 proved that you don't need many polygons for awesome looking car models. PG2 will feature roughly 3 times as many polygons per car as GTR 2002 which is just ridiculous - done purely for screenshots in magazines.
And at one time we thought that the cars in Pole Position were awesome Personally, I do not mind the cut frame rate (which I probably will not even notice) and will greatly love the enhanced graphics. Especially if they decide to offer (no clue if they do or not for this game) higher resolution for my big screen. It's simply a question of taking some care and using something better than a dime store sewing needle as a stylus. On the other hand, quite a few of my original CDs from the mid 80s are unreadable now even though they have no single mark on them. Of course it's subjective, but I have yet to hear a digital recording of a piano which didn't sound harsh. And Neil Young wailing through his stack of Marshalls (nasty, analog technology of course) just sounds warmer on vinyl. Stephen

Very true of 80s CD players but there's some good ones around these days that can match vinyl for warmth. Unfortunately they start at about 2 rand. - then again so do decent turntables.

A brilliant analogy, Damien: Vinyl recordings rotate at a maximum of 78 rpm, compared to the 1,000+ rpm of a CD. Everyone knows that the faster the medium spins, the better the sound because the bits of static fly off and don't get caught in the needle or laser-beam. As for FM vs AM, that's an equally excellent analogy because it once again invokes the speed factor. FM ('F' Modulation) is the sixth step in the evolution of radio transmission and is naturally much more efficient than AM. FM allows the sound waves to bounce up and down much faster than AM ('A' Modulation), which was the original mode of radio transmission as invented by the Italians Marconi and his lesser-known partner, Signor Panasonic. As for those people who don't get it, (FM, that is) they just need to either buy a new wireless set or put up a better aerial, that's all. Bruce. That's because some people realise that, thought the difference can be measured, it cannot be heard by over 85% of the population. And, of those 15% that can physically tell the difference between vinyl and CD or a lousy set of speakers and a good one over 65% don't give a rodent's behind. I'm in the 85% that can't tell the difference, BTW. I can tell a harsh sound apart from a warm one, but I can't tell which is more accurate. The sound engineer's hard work is completely lost on me. I can tell obvious faults (clipping, booming, hissing, etc...), but, other than that, no, sorry, too subtle. Jan. =---

Eh...what was that, Jan?? Speak up! :) You and me both, mate. I've amassed a vinyl collection of some 300 albums over the years - all in pretty good nick and rarely played now, other than to copy them to CD or mini-disk. But when I do spin one up I'm buggered if I can tell the difference between the vinyl and CD versions of, for example, "War Of The Worlds". Highly-expensive and "superior" audio equipment would be a total waste of money for me. I'll stick with my B&O, Denon and Onkyo gear, circa late 1970's - mid 1980's! :) Bruce. Well, I'll repeat it's all subjective of course, but I listened to a variety of CD players during my last round of buying (which was in 2000, not in the 80s) and never found the huge difference that many claimed. I settled on a Cambridge Audio, which is neither exhorbitantly expensive nor cheap as dirt, and it does the job admirably, but there are certain recordings I still prefer on vinyl. But now we've veered way off topic... and I actually agree with the message of your original post, somewhat. I find a constant framerate (even 25fps in something like GP4) to look a lot smoother and faster than a fluctuating high framerate, but for control, every extra frame helps. I'm not sure how often the controllers on an XBOX are polled, but I certainly notice the difference between 30fps and 60fps in Live for Speed, for example, when trying to keep a handle on the Caterham... Absolutely. On the other hand, it is not that hard to poll the controllers independently off the framerate. GPL does it for example. But even then, having a 60Hz picture does still look like you're more in control, no matter your controller input rate (I use 100Hz mostly with my own sim). According to the developers, the controller will be polled at 60Hz and so will the physics engine despite the 30fps frame rate. I believe games like F1C, F1 2002 poll the controller every graphic frame which would explain why the handling in those games feels so sluggish on slow PCs yet so brilliant on extremely fast PCs.
