I don't have any experience with 3 hds. But what format are the drives in.
ntfs? if so, win98 won't read them. try formatting them.

Second-hand hard drives not showing in Windows
Verne could not get two donated 4.3GB Western Digital drives to appear in Windows 98, although the BIOS detected them. Suggestions covered jumper settings, cable select, enabling IDE channels and NTFS formatting. Reformatting and partitioning with FDISK eventually got one drive working; the other appeared to be dead.

Okay.............my brother in law's employer was giving away old 4.3g HDs
because they upgraded theirs. He grabbed me 2. I figured I'd done it before,
I'd do it again, installing a 2nd HD. First attempt at a 3rd HD.
Well..............no go. I tried what I think is everything and they just do
NOT show up in my windows explorer. I can get the CMOS to recognize them
under auto detect........it also recognizes them if I manually do it. Upon
boot up it shows my master HD, then it shows the new HDs as both 2nd master
and primary slave........then my CDrom as 2nd slave. My primary HD runs off
the board as does my CDrom......it was set up this way for me.....it just
seems that playing with the jumpers yeilded no drives appearing in windows.
I am running Win98 and have 2 extra power points and IDE

Be sure you've set the jumper-pins *on* the HDD correctly.
- Your *primary* harddisk should be set as MASTER (Do *not* use cable
select) and it should be connected to the IDE-0 "channel"
- your "D-drive" (i.e secondary HD) should be set as SLAVE and connected to
the same cable as your primary disk (i.e IDE-0)
- Your third harddisk should be set as MASTER and connected to *IDE-1*
- Your CD-rom should be set as SLAVE and be connected to *IDE-1* thru the
same cable as your third disk.
Once all that is done... hit 'DEL' upon power-up / first-boot and go into
the Bios. Find the "drive-set-up screen" and make sure every channel is set
to auto-detect the drive type.
Save - reboot - enjoy!

And make sure that the *two* controlers are enabled, if there was no drive
or CDrom on the second one.

This is what I used to run. I think everything appropriate has been
suggested, namely ;
1) Check the jumpers. Since the BIOS is correctly detecting I would assume
that to be correct, but better to double check.
2) Check the secondary IDE channel is enabled.
3) Check the drives don't need "FDISK"ed away from NTFS. Again I think that
even an NTFS drive would still show up in Win 98, but be unreadable.
4) Try a search on the 'net for the drive's model number, to see if anything
needs to be set in Windows as regards a special driver, DMA/PIO settings or
whatever.

This is very unlikely as the problem but using a program like TweakUI, make
sure the drive letter is check marked or enabled, not unchecked or disabled.
I would make sure all drive letters, A thru Z, are enabled/checked.

1 Physical HD does not necessarily equal 1 partition!
So creating multiple partitions can create lots of drive letters.

Why not use cable select? Is this to just be on the safe side? If not,
then I see no reason for it. I have 2 drives using cable select just
fine.

Yes, but without a partition, they can't create the drive letter.
So it does have something to do with it right?

I assume you have swapped the various 'new' drives around and made sure that
if it could be made to show up in Windows, that it was working fine.
Otherwise, I'd run scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor or some sort of surface
test to make sure it is working ok. A bad disk will show up in CMOS even if
it is damaged enough not to function properly within Windoze.
Other than that, the other advice has been good here: Make sure IDE 1
(secondary IDE, primary IDE should be labeled as 0) is activated. Make sure
that a HD is the Master on each channel, and any CDROMs or CDRWs are Slaves
to any HD's on their channel. Make sure the Master devices are jumpered as
Masters and the Slaves are jumpered as Slaves. I know someone said they had
CS mode working, but I've been tinkering with and building computers since
the 80s (can you say Heath kit? or TRS-80 or TI-99?) and CS has NEVER worked
properly for me in a PC. And also certainly, you'll need to do a reformat if
you are using NTFS formatted drives in anything less than an NT system. NT,
don't forget, encompasses everything from before NT-WS4.0 to the current
XP(NT5.1). There may also be an issue with these drives being FAT16 (since
4.3g HDs are years OLD by their very nature) and your system possibly being
FAT32. When Windoze95 died and Windoze98 appeared, so did FAT32. If these
drives were FAT16, they should still show up and work, but I wouldn't mix
and match FAT16 and FAT32 drives within the same system. You're asking for
trouble if you do IMHO (filenames longer than 8.3 can then become an issue).
What FAT type does FDISK show when you run it on the new drives?
AND, as an aside, I don't recall you ever mentioning the OS of the systems
these came out of. It is possible that they aren't even in any SORT of MS
format. 4.3g drives were around when the likes of O/S2 and NeXT OS's were
still around...and let us not forget that Linux runs on PC's too. A low
level format followed by an OS native fdisk may be the only way to go.
AND, it may be (since you said they were WD drives) that the systems they
came out of were so old that they didn't support 1g + HD's without a WD
driver. I had to use one of those on an old DOS 6.22 box once, I think they
called it Drive Rocket or similar? The old DOS didn't support 'large' HD's
and this overlay driver had to be installed to get them to format past 1 GB.
Actually I think it was past 540 MB, can't remember. Either way, this is
buried in the boot sector and needs a reformat to get rid of it for use in a
more current system.
I resorted to sending an email to Western Digital to ask their ideas. The
drives I am trying to use are WD Caviar 14300 (AKA AC14300) if that makes
any difference to anybody.......or anything. Awaiting their response now. I
do have a Seagate 1.8g HD that I can install with no problems whatsoever.
Odd to me that BOTH these drives would refuse to install properly. They both
spin and sound like they are operating normally , well, one kinda clunks a
little......I have tried everyione's ideas and none seem to work....DAMN !!!
ah well.......thanks to all who have tried to help.

If they were created and formatted in NTFS, which is quite common at a

letter? Try assigning the CD a higher letter. Maybe the HD refused to
take any letters higher than the CD drive. Of course if you change the
CD drive letter this will screw up some programs which look at the CD
drive, for example Nascar2003. ;-)

Boot your computer into DOS with your Windows emergency boot disk.
The fdisk utility is included in the floppy disk.
good to hear you got it working. Theres nothing like a puter or hardware to

it onto a floppy, but the minilinux that is on there and use
the Linux fdisk which is far superior to the dos version. It
will allow you to completely wipe the drive and partitions on
it and re-create a brand new shiny FAT32 partition that you can
format under windows.
Feel free to mail me if you need further details.
