RASF1 Australian GP race report and damage settings

RAS F1 Challenge league drivers recounted a chaotic Melbourne race with a start-line pileup and wings everywhere, and suggested reducing damage to 30–40%. Wing settings and launch technique were compared. Eldred described the trouble of hosting without a dedicated server option in F1 Challenge, and others proposed workarounds for removing the server car from the grid.

Wow that was brutal. I guess there must have been some starting line problems, because I somehow shot out in front of everybody and led the first 8 laps. Then I screwed up bad and never got it back. Twice into the pits to fix wings and the handling never really came back. I finished 2 laps down. Really wanted to just drop but needed the practice and didn't want to deprive the one guy who was left of an honest victory. Congrats to Josh Boudreau, who won, set fastest lap, and had the wisdom to always be near the pits when he spun. ;o)

I guess I had all the luck. At the start we we're pretty evenly matched, hasquau... i was expecting a very close finish with you. Thanks to Eldred for the server, as always. Perhaps next race we should consider putting the damage at something like 30-40%? Maybe that way more than half the field will survive the start.
Yes I would vote for that too. Some damage needs to be on, but maybe a little less than the current setting. I just watched the replay and it was total carnage, wings everywhere. There is either something very strange with the damage model or Eldred was running a very odd setup, because at one point his front wing just fell off in the middle of the track for no apparent reason. It was somewhere around lap 4 I think, right before we tangled just ahead of the pit entrance. The reason I overslowed for that turn is I was avoiding his wing, which was in the middle of the track. If you have the replay, find that spot, switch to a view of the Williams, get an external view (PgUp key), rotate around with the keypad arrows to see his car from the front, then rewind a bit to see how Eldred got there. Damnedest thing. Decreasing damage might prevent that kind of silliness. "Josh Boudreau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > ... I swerved to go around, and while avoiding Neil I ended up losing the car and my rear wing. Race over. Neil and another driver were out a few corners later. All that practice time down the toilet. :-) David G Fisher
Aha. FWIW I find I get a better launch without launch control. I use low TC and choose first gear carefully, launch at about 30% throttle and upshift to second as soon as I hear the revs come up. Works okay for me. In the replay you appeared to have gotten a very good launch, do use launch control or traction control? BTW how much wing were you guys running? I went conservative. The FIA circuit map shows max speed of 300 kph and lap times of 1:27 or so. 300 kph is achievable with full downforce, although I never saw 1:27. :o) The included Australia setup has wings at 47 and the in-game track map shows top speeds of around 310 or so and a target lap time of 1:28. I tried those settings and ended up slower by a second or so. Well it was a little but inconclusive because I was having troubles with my throttle pedal at the time also. Anyway it seemed prudent to go with higher downforce, but when I watched a few people in practice it seemed like most of you were hitting 309 or so on the front straight, and some of you were running 1:29's. So just wondering if I went the wrong way with my setup choice. Well I guess there is something about F1 that I just still don't get. I tried setting the wings to 46 and I can't get below 1:32. I ran a 1:30 with full wings. With wings at 46 I am losing more time through the high speed corners than I can make up on the straights. Just out of curiosity Spudster have you tried full wings? Maybe you would be running 1:27's if you did. "Spudster" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:_QM6b.111469$[email hidden]... > I was running 46 wing front and rear when I turned the 29.XX. >

No, didn't try full wing. I have a setup that works for most high-downforce tracks that I used today. I might be able to tweak more out of Australia with a custom setup. Spud. I have *yet* to run one of these things without drama. Today it had its roots in my hard drive crash. I had to reload the damn game, and I'd forgotten about that. I run home, get the server started, then look for the F1C CD. It took me a good 10 minutes to find it, then another 15-20 to load it. Jumped in the game, then I had to set all my control options. That took a while, because they didn't want to 'stick' the first couple times. I didn't get any practice laps because of that. So when qual started, I went out, and discovered that I was only getting 16 fps. Not good, because I couldn't control the car. The best I could run was 1:59. I couldn't exit to change the options because qual was closed, so I wouldn't have been able to get back in. And there's no way to change your graphics options once you're in a race. F'king stupid, IMO. Anyway, when the race started I was looking at the server trying to get that car off the track. So, that cost me about 20-25 seconds as my car was stationary while the field rocketed away. When I finally got going, I spun somwehere, knocked off the front wing. Pitted for a replacement, spun again. Knocked off the back wing this time, kept going. Snap spin somewhere else(guessing because of the rear wing), knocked off the RF wheel. Limped back to the pits - end of race. I ran a local race after I'd adjusted my graphics to give me 31 fps. I immediately went out and ran a 1:47. Still nothing special, but a big improvement without changing anything else. Why do I torture myself by running these games again...? Sigh... Yes, I agree, the EA F1 titles totally suck for dedicated servers. Do you have any kids/wife/buddy that can drive the server car off the track while you rocket away in your own car? :) > I ran a local race after I'd adjusted my graphics to give me 31 fps. Now consider having been able to run those practice laps. You probably could have brough that down in the 1:30's, which would have been competitive. Sorry you're having a hard time, but when you get the hang of driving the cars its a blast.

Granted you would have had a a whole lap to drive around wingless, and you would have had a long pitstop, but you can repair wing damage with F1c. Certainly any hope of competing with the leaders would be gone, but your race could have gone on...
>Yes, I agree, the EA F1 titles totally suck for dedicated servers. Do you >have any kids/wife/buddy that can drive the server car off the track while >you rocket away in your own car? :) Well, seeing as the server is 40 miles away and I'm connecting remotely, that isn't an option... Can you imagine how much bigger the F1C community would be if they HAD a dedicated server option? Someone dropped the ball BIG time on that one... :-(

No it wouldn't, but at least I wouldn't have been spinning every other lap... >Sorry you're having a hard time, but when you get the hang of driving the >cars its a blast. We'll see. I seem to remember getting FPS of 40-50 before the HD crash. I need to tweak some more stuff yet, obviously. I still won't be competitive, but at least it won't be so frustrating(hopefully). Rumor has it (from a good source) is that Thunder 2004 has dedicated server support that rivals Papy's. Pity they still haven't discovered the importance of a tire model or track accuracy, but at least they should finally have multi down. Jason

I do have a setup though that let's me do 1:29's, and I managed a 1:28.675 just today. I use 49 front and 48 rear wing. I have steering lock set to 20 or 21. My top speed on the front straight is 191 mph/306kph. If you want to try it, e-mail me at [email hidden] and I'll send it on. It feels good with my Ferrari wheel at least. It's twitchy, but I've gotten used to it and it gets me through the tight turns quickly. You scared the life out of me when you managed to avoid the stalled car - brilliant avoidance tactics ;) I was really chuffed to get away from the carnage and happily tootled off to T2 where a McLaren punted me and took out the rear wing :( Except for the damn brake failures in longer races - I don't really have a problem with the damage setting. All the damage I get (and that's lots ;) ) is always due to contact of some sort. I really don't mind either way though. Regards

Exactly. I probably didn't need to slow that much because I'm not sure that debris does any actual damage in this game, but I couldn't remember for sure and didn't want to take a chance. It was a very low speed impact (with Josh) so I don't think any damage was done. Anyway Eldred, tell your mechanic to remember to tighten the bolts on the damn front wing next time! ;o) "Josh Boudreau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > No, Eldred. Very handy. I don't know for sure, but I believe those track maps were developed from the actual in-game tracks. The speeds and lap times do not match the FIA map on any of the ones that I have checked. In fact I think the in-game track map is essentially a benchmark lap for that track. Good reference material. Actually if Dave could have put his wing back on in one stop and then not messed up again he would have come in at least second and possibly first. Josh and I were in the pits twice for repairs. Mine took longer because I blew it on turn 1, and because I went all the way around and forgot to signal for a pit stop until I got to the entrance. BTW welcome back. :o) "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > > Granted you would have had a a whole lap to drive around wingless, and > you would have had a long pitstop, but you can repair wing damage withF1c. > Certainly any hope of competing with the leaders would be gone, but your > race could have gone on... > > >

Just curious how you are doing this. I assume you are using some kind of remote control software on the server? If so, here's a thought. You have 20 seconds from the time the race session starts until the lights come on. Can you take this time to jump in the server car and just park it on the grass? Who cares if it makes it back to the garage or not, as long as it's off the pavement? You might be able to make it back to your own car in time for the start, but even if you don't it will cost you less time than if you waited for the race to start. So the server car gets a penalty for jumping the start, big deal. I don't think it will stop the race. For that matter, couldn't you just hit escape on the server car? Or will that end the session? Test it out sometime. Hate to see you getting screwed like this on every race. I already ran a BUNCH of tests about it. Tried for an hour or so one weekend. Even though you can hit ESC from the grid, the car doesn't STAY gone until you hit ESC *after* the lights go out. In other words, it will put it right back on the grid before the lights go out. Real effing STUPID if you ask me, and maybe done on purpose(to avoid dedicated servers, maybe?). Why *else* would you allow a car to sit stationary, and NOT be cleared by the game? It would also be difficult to drive the thing off the track. Too-slow screen updates cause that one... What I need is something like a timed macro that I can fire off when we go to grid. 40 seconds later it hits ESC on the server machine... When you are running the game on your server, is it running full screen? I do some programming and it might be possible to hook into the game's process and send commands/messages to it to switch sessions and get the damn server car off the grid, but if that fails it might also be possible to get the window's region and implement some sort of mouse/keyboard hack program to automaticly push the session buttons and the escape key. If i have some free time next weekend I might play around with those ideas. I'll let you know if i come up with anything successful. -- Josh Boudreau <josh at kfoo dot net>

It's probably running full screen, like a client would. But where would that setting be? Eldred -- "A voice from the crowd: Right, everyone out of my garden. I've had enough of this!" Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPLRank -2.4 N2k3 rank ? Remove SPAM-OFF to reply.
