For any of you who have seen the awesomely impressive "virtual spectator"
computer generated world rally stages--isn't that data (all the stage
layouts and scenery) just begging to be included in a sim.????? I mean the
hardest part by far of doing a proper WRC sim would be the tracks--and they
are already done!! Take the physics from LFS and boom, you've got a top
notch WRC sim on the shelf in short order! Am I crazy?

I thought the same thing on the virtual spectator. Obviously the tracks
aren't quite detailed, at least not up to modern day game standards, but
those can be redone, etc.
But then again, that virtual spectator thing is probably just made up using
a few maps of the tracks, some topographical maps too showing elevation
changes.
So with these maps (if they are the source of the virtual spectator), I see
no reason why companies or people can't make the real stages then in proper
videogame quality detail, etc.
Maps obviously exist of the the stages, etc.. plenty of reference photos
too.

The reason nobody has included all the realworld WRC races into a commercial
game yet is money. Realworld rallystages are under registered bodies who
organize the races and own the relevant stuff, and the licenses usually
won't come cheap. I've seen some numbers with dollar signs in front of them
for some famous WRC races, and even when not including the license fees for
the real cars, licensing costs are quite .. well, "spectacular" comes close
as a superlative!
Basically, if the added benefit to the game costs more money than it
generates with estimated additional sales, it's very, very unlikely to
happen. That's the basics of every business, really.
As for uncommercial mods etc - I honestly don't know what would happen. It
depends on the company or organization who owns the rights. For example, I
know several Star Trek mods to existing scifi games had to be pulled off
development after the mod groups began receiving very dryly worded emails
from Paramount's lawyers.
All that said, I'd love to see a rally game with realworld stages too.

Public roads in rallies aren't technically "race tracks", I don't see why
one developper couldn't model the roads he wants to, unless they are private
roads owned by somebody.
I also don't think that "telemetry data from drivers" are their own
property. I don't see why they couldn't just fit fictionnal drivers with
the real line of WRC drivers. Just program a simple "change name of driver"
option, it's been done for ages in gaming. I mean we're entering a meta
concept here, the ownership of data made of 0's and 1's, which can represent
the direction and speed of a car, in which somebody drove. No copyright
needed here.

OK...I think that's getting a bit carried away since we have only ever had
one rally game that even tried to have accurate tracks (Mobil 1). Once we
have a few, I'll get excited about the real-time thing!

simulator to handle from a technical perspective and too long for the user
to handle from a patience perspective (at least in the opinion of the
marketing departments)--and one single WRC event has about the same length
of track as a typical rally game simulates for the whole season. Ask Codies
how much they would have to pay for the track licensing (which they
obviously don't) vs. the car manufacturers vs. the drivers vs. Colin
himself. Although Colin may actually need that money now...
