Mercedes-Benz World Racing demo impressions

Posters tried the newly released Mercedes-Benz World Racing demo. Early verdicts called it slow and dull, but others found an adjustable simulation slider and praised its graphics, large open maps and enjoyable handling, comparing it to Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. Complaints centred on canned force feedback, the keyboard-driven menus and poor performance on cards without pixel shaders.

The notes indicate the following: "Windows XP: We recommend using the drivers provided by the manufacturer (where possible, Microsoft certified!!) for Windows XP. These are the Microsoft factory-installed drivers for your computer setup." I guess I can't play because my drivers were not installed by the factory. <spamtrap@localhost> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

There is more in the demo, than just the SUV. You can drive a 300SL Gullwing, A-Class and a SLK 230 Kompressor version. If it's too arcadish, you can adjust just how sim'ish or arcad'ish you want, from 0 to 100%. Look under game options. Deadzone can be adjusted to. Poke around under options, its well hidden ;) And if you dont want to drive againt the AI, turn where ever you like and enjoy a freeride in the Alps ;) / Borchers
Wow.. sounds pretty neat.. The environment graphics look AMAAAZING. Mike http://mikebeauchamp.com "Karsten Borchers" <karsten@*spam*borchers.dk> wrote in message news:3f6251e8$0$32522$[email hidden]...

Agreed. Looks like the Mercedes version of NFS:PU. Graphics are gorgeous and my wheel works perfectly. :) I ordered the full version from a UK-based place; they said Sept 19 is the release date. I haven't tried it on full-sim or full-arcade yet; only the default setting. - TN Doug Hook wrote:

My one complaint so far is the FF, it feels very canned, like a fixed spring. Other than that it's a great game. "Steve Simpson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bk0r5v$mtk4e$[email hidden]...

Today I spent a couple of hours on it. First impressions were bad. Very clumsy menu, major sound stuttering, during the first race on a track called 'Area 51' the sky was cluttered with UFOs, balloons and airplanes flying 100m above the ground.. But, more importantly, the driving itself didn't feel bad at all. So first of all I installed the latest SBLive drivers to get rid of the stuttering. It helped partially - first there is the crackling, after a second or 10 I hear a popping sound and then all of a sudden the crackling is totally gone. Weird. I tried some other tracks, and they were much better than that Area 51 track. Especially the Alps track was beautifull. Big spaces to race on (6x6miles) with different circuits and routes setup in each area. 7 areas in total, with a total of 120 different routes and tracks. The first cars you can drive are slooooow. Also the gearing seems strange, I drive 140km/h in 3rd before it redlines.. but when you get the faster cars, the whole thing becomes funfunfun. World racing is sliding paradise! A nice feature is that the computer gives you comments about your driving. Its nice to see COOL SLIDING! after you did a really cool sliding :)) All in all, a very enjoyable game allthough it has quite some shortcomings and bugs. One thing I would like to see in a patch is more graphic options, you can hardly set anything on or off in this game. And during some extreme situations the fps drops a little bit too much on my system. I'd also like to be able to turn those annoying UFO's and crap like that off. Bottom line: having much fun with it, definately going to buy it. Andre

I think BT is a superb solution to the main problem with newly released demos, patches, etc. which is that you get a DL speed of about 1k a week even if you can get to the file in the first place. Once that initial peak's over (first few days I imagine) there will be fewer people sharing via BT and the main DL sites can take up the slack having saved a whole heap of bandwidth. It must not like "low-end" graphics cards, as I found the visuals decidedly worse than NFS:PU. I'm only running a 1GHz notebook with a 32Mb GeForce2Go, but I was rather disappointed. I found it novel for the first day or so to drive around the boundless map and see where I get to, but the driving feel was, for me, far behind NFS:PU and eventually it ended up in the trash bin. Yes, unfortunately if your graphics card doesn't support pixel/vertex shaders the game looks well below average. Geforce2s and Geforce4 MXs don't have shaders. On a 1GHz laptop with a 32Mb GF2Go the graphics would be so slow that it would be nearly impossible to tell what the handling is like. I can assure you though, if you've got 2GHz+ CPU and a GF4Ti+ then this game is a NFS:PU killer. (As long as you run it in 100% simulation mode)

Maybe not, but using home, delete etc. as well really makes it un intuitive to me. Can it *really* be that hard to add mouse support? If I'd wanted a games console, I'd have bought a games console...... Ian -- Ian Riches Bedford, UK

Yes, 100%. To be fair, I reloaded NFS:PU last night to see if I was seeing the world through the rose-tinted which time tends to cast over our eyes. Some cars in NFS:PU have waay too much grip (almost all the modern era cars) and the game takes on a decidedly arcade feel. However, most of my fun with NFS:PU was in the 550 Spyder, the late-60s 911S or the 356 Carrera, and all these cars still feel quite good the way the handle, slide, recover. Handling on the skidpad is also quite convincing in NFS:PU. I tried the various cars in the Mercedes demo but wasn't too excited by it all. The SLR just gripped and gripped and gripped. Perhaps they put some modern P-Zeros onto it, and swapped out the 50s era suspension for something more modern. Just an opinion, of course. Overall, my preference for a current driving sim is still LFS. Nice visuals, realistic environments, great track design and good frame rates on average machines. Stephen

At 1024 x 768 x 16, race starts at South City are in the high 20s, then settle around 40fps once past the first corner. At 1024 x 768 x 16, the WR demo was always in the mid 20s during a race, not matter where the AI cars were. Just hotlapping alone in LFS, I get between 40 - 60 fps at my notebook's native screen resolution of 1400 x 1050 (16bit). Stephen

Again, on a 2GHz+ with GF4 or Ati 9700 - MBWR completely blows LFS out of the water in terms of graphics (pixel shaders simply rock) and frame rate. Also a game like GTR 2002 runs at twice the frame rate of LFS and looks slightly better. Apart from this minor quibble though, LFS is brilliant.
Is Slick waiting to take your order then ;-) (others disregard - in joke) MS "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:3NBbb.33676$[email hidden]...

PS/2 I know, but it's had poor reviews todate IIRC. Shame, nearly bought it too.
