RAS nostalgia 15 years on and upcoming sims

Jack Sampson lamented how quiet RAS had become since the NASCAR 1 and 2 days. Regulars discussed why newsgroups lost out to web forums and ISPs dropping Usenet, and talked about Shift 2, the console NASCAR game and delays to rFactor 2. Others reminisced about early Microprose and Crammond titles.

What happened to this place? It used to be a great place to discuss NASCAR 1 and NASCAR 2. ;) Shame it died off, real shame.

I tell you what, I promise to buy Shift 2 after all, and rant about it when it's a complete disappointment. That should stop rigor mortis setting in for a little longer. Now I have a PS3 I'll also be trying to buy that Nascar title which is out soon.... it looks like it might be fun even for someone who prefers the occasional right turn. Someone on VirtualR said it would only be out in the USA though. Hopefully they're wrong. Andrew McP

From what I've seen the new Nascar game will be very arcade like. They talk about realism (as they all do) but quite often it's just hype to get the armchair wannabe racers thinking they can actually drive a race car. I hope Shift 2 will be different like they've been promoting but I wouldn't be putting any money on it. Mike.

The marketing hype for Shift2 is working on me... which is a sure sign that it's going to be Shift1 with a few tweaks which won't make it feel like a proper sim. However I am practising being optimistic, just in case I discover that rose tinted glasses improve my overall mood. I may well be saved from my Nascar itch though. The price to import that title will probably put me off. PS3 games are expensive enough to start with without the import premium to discourage me from taking a gamble. And I do think some of the videos show some exceptionally dubious physics. That's never a good sign. What puzzles me though is that after all this time getting an acceptable on-track experience in a racing title is still so hard. I'm sure it can't be easy, but surely with so many CPU cycles to throw at projects it ought to be possible to plug in some physics modules and get close enough without kidnapping Dave Kaemmer. Mind you, even DK seems to have to hand-tweak individual vehicles rather than putting various parameters into a general purpose physics model. So maybe we're still a long way off having sims which are based on pure science rather than the messy combination of art and craft which seems to be required to make something feel realistic. > Hey, we get spammed about 3d walkthroughs It's nice that someone thinks we're important enough to spam. But they're so clueless they also spammed the flight-sim group. That's even closer to archeological status than this place! Andrew McP

Dave Kaemmer already created the best Nascar game available on the market (nr2003). iRacing NASCAR probably beats it but as I haven't tried it and don't want to pay for the privilege I can't say for sure. Just because nr2003 is old it doesn't mean the game's not good any more. If you want the latest cars you can download the 2011 Sprint cup mod from Bullring which I guarrantee will still be more realistic than the new Nascar game coming out. I have to agree with your assessment of the new game. The drawn in draft lines are bit of a give away as to how arcade it's going be. It doesn't sound like they're going to release a PC version so you won't even be able to add any "realism" mods. I had to download the realism mod for GTR2 after I'd been playing the original GTR for so long as the original was much more realistic. Mike T

Then Unreal came out and I got hooked on FPS games. The pc.games.action NG has slowed down also but not nearly as dead as this NG. Mostly still the old timer gamers posting about how the new games have consolitus (what we use to call arcade-ish). I still play auto racing sim games also, but because there is not much to see here lately, (except maybe talk about iRacing that I don't do) I rarely check it out. If we had more posts here, then maybe it would get viewed and posted to more. ;)

Now get off my lawn, I'm back to lurking ;-) All the best, Uwe
I think NG's never really caught on with most users. For me they were invaluable. I have been sim racing since Indy 500 The Simulation came out about 20 yrs. ago & I got so much help from this group with anything from H/W to S/W and EVERYTHING in between. I think people use the forums that are avaliable for there paticular game. I use the iRacing forums now and the following is Huge. Just my 2 cents. What new NASCAR game? Not for the PC, right? -pw

Those, and others, seem to show that there are some nice additions (eg night racing) but that nothing has really changed since Shift1 in terms of the physics. The crash rolls are especially suspicious.... there's just something not quite right about the transitions from ground to air and back to the ground again. I enjoyed 1 for what it was... a good bit of forgiving, slippery fun. And thrashing round the Ring with all the special effects (and the HUD turned off) was very immersive. So I'm sure I'll pick this up, I'm just not convinced it'll be worth paying full price for. Unfortunately its availability on Steam means it'll be very easy to crack and purchase early. Maybe even on day1. In fact I nearly pre-ordered yesterday despite my doubts. It's nice to see that the lack of willpower which got me into so much financial trouble on iRacing is alive and well. My credit card company will be very happy to find I haven't given up wasting money. :-> Andrew McP PS Of course you're right about newsgroups. My ISP doesn't carry them, and I'm not sure how much longer we'll be able to rely on the various free services.

I've only recently got hold of GTR2 / Power'n'Glory mod, and am having a great time throwing Lotus Cortinas around. Shift demo ran OK on my machine, but wouldn't play nicely with my ancient Logitech wheel. Nor does Dirt, but somehow playing that with the keyboard doesn't bother me..... Look, I know we're short of people posting here, but... you're banned, ok? Out, right now! ;-) Actually you're reminding me of many happy hours spent on Crammond's Revs back when wheels had yet to be invented by computer cave men. And any modern game designed with a console controller in mind must be ok with a keyboard. It's a case of mind over matter I suppose. Sims are mainly in the head anyway. Especially Racing Legends. Andrew McP PS I just remembered none of us can ban you anyway. I think we have to have written permission from ymenard.

Have you ever played Dirt? Let's just say that's it's not on-topic for R.A.*S*. > Look, I know we're short of people posting here, but... you're banned, ok? And some of those old ones just worked in a way that the flashy-graphics modern day stuff doesn't always recapture. I played Revs on my mate's BBC, and Crammond's F1GP was one of the first games I got on my PC 16MHz 386SX PC. Happy days.. Anyone remember that great flight sim Tornado? ;-) > PS I just remembered none of us can ban you anyway. I think we have to have written > permission from ymenard. Hmm. Guess I'm OK for now then. No, but you've got me thinking about just how many hours I spent on just four Microprose titles: Gunship Silent Service Railroad Tycoon and, of course, GC's F1GP. Ah, happy days on the Amstrad CPC 464, then the giddy heights of the Atari STfm! Cheers, Rick. ps - Is it just me, or has it all gone a bit too quiet on RFactor 2?
[email hidden] (Ian Riches) wrote: > Anyone remember that great flight sim Tornado? ;-) Stop that, right now! > He seems to be MIA since around 2004 He's alive and well (and still a bit grumpy*) on iRacing. At least he was last time I was there. I may be getting my Menards mixed up, but I doubt it. At the very least they must be related. :-) Andrew McP *not that I have any room to talk; I was born with grumpy DNA.

It got everyone a bit over-excited. With iRacing to compete with they have to make sure their sim really does feel like a significant step up from rF1, otherwise this small community isn't going to hand over enough cash to keep the team together and the project alive. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and I'd rather they waited another year (or more?) than showed their hand too soon.... despite the fact I really, really wanted rF2 to fill the gap left in my racing schedule by iRacing. Mind you, I was only doing one or two races a week so it's not much of a hole. GT5, NKPro, and a bit of Shift manage to fill that. I just wanted to be inspired again. I did try the GTR2/Power&Glory2 mod yesterday (thanks to Ian mentioning it) but the physics didn't grab me.... I've been spoiled by iRacing and NKPro. I wish Kunos would add some AI. I'd buy the sim again if he did. Andrew McP
