I've had my Momo Racing combo for about 3 weeks now.
As in my car, I've been using my right foot to accelerate and brake.
A friend told me that race car drivers typically use both feet - one
for braking and one for acceleration.
Is this true?
How do you all use your pedals? One foot or two?
One foot or two on sim racing pedals
A new Momo owner asked whether others use one foot or two. Most said they left-foot brake, citing faster transitions and the need to preload brakes with loose oval setups, though some fast GPL drivers such as Aku Pietikainen said right-foot braking with an H-shifter was no slower. The thread turned to Eldred's struggle to improve his GPLRank and tips for the Nurburgring.

I use two for the sake of not wearing my feet out switching all the time

it gives you better times through corners, as there is no delay in swapping
from throttle to brake pedal.
When I drive my real car I use 1 foot as I am not usually going quite as
fast :-)

I'm a right-foot-only driver when sim racing. I've been told that it might
be costing me some time at some tracks under some circumstances, but I live
in fear of screwing up my footwork in the event that my next car will be a
manual-transmission'd vehicle and my coordination in a position where a
Shift-R can't get me a new car will be all messed up and I wind up in real
world trouble. It probably won't ever happen, but why chance it?

LOL! That's good. Trust me, it's easy to shift from 1 to 2 foot driving when
going between manual and auto trannies in street cars. I own a couple of
each and I am 2 footed in my automatic autos (and in the sim, where I don't
have a clutch pedal and use the lone help 'auto-clutch' sometimes, somtimes
not) and obviously brake and gas with one foot in my manual autos. The
heel-toe method for 2 foot driving a manual only works in my Vette where the
pedals are setup a little closer together and are condusive to this style.
Even then I only do it when I'm in the mountains and the roads are condusive
to shifting that much at one time. Of course I grew up doing stuff such as
that and may be more comfortable than most in that situation.
Do what you please, but you're over-thinking the street car thing a tad
much. Do what you need to do to go fast in the sim and it will not hurt your
street driving instincts one bit IMHO.

I switched over to left-foot braking a couple years ago. It probably dropped
my GPLRank by about 10 seconds. Not a lot, granted - but faster.

One foot. I've been trying to make the transition to left foot braking
lately, but am still very clumsy at it. I've been assured that with some
practice, there are a lot of spots where I can shave some time off through
corners with left foot braking. Old habits die hard, though, and I'm still
a couple seconds per track faster in GPL with right foot braking.

At some courses, using fixed setups, you HAVE to. Some of the setups are
terribly loose on entry, and if you don't pre-load the brakes and let the
slight front brake bias help you, you are gonna spin out.
If I remember correctly, the Rock was a very prime example of this.
Richmond is also easier to handle with the brakes just slightly pre-loaded
before letting up.

Two feet makes sense; it does save time and at racing speeds (even in a

I've raced some Karts where I had to use both feet and I got used to it
pretty quick. There are places I do 2 foot at Nurburgring. 2 footed stock
car setups are a nightmare for me unless I shift some weight around. Boby
Labonte is a 1 footer I've heard. I can do 1:04's at Watkins Glen in the
Eagle (GPL) 1 footed so it cant be all that terrible for your driving.. but
maybe it is the difference? ;)

One foot ...... but then I only use one pedal.
I only race in CMR's 2 and 3 (for now) - and don't bother with the brakes,
as speeds reached aren't that high.
I'm sure this must affect my lap times, but I can still beat expert AI's on
all CMR2 arcade circuits.
The trouble is, I can't tell how heavily I'm braking - as there are no FF
pedals I know of, so it's a bit off-putting.
Still, it's made me curious enough to try with some braking.

While you're there, could you throw me that bundle of Lotuses I left up
in the branches? ;)

You can if you're already that close. Then it's just a matter of putting
in the laps and work at it like a pig for days (like I did... ;)

That isn't the main reason they do it - it's a way of moving brake/weight
balance while braking/cornering.

Then go drive it some more, but don't do it in GPL. Get the "rough and
ready" conversion for F12k2/F1C and have at it with the GTR2002 N-GT Ferrari
and Doug Arnao's Spa setup.
Not only will that get you near or under the 8-minute mark in no time
(always good for the ego), the grippier car will also allow you to play with
your line through the corner sequences. It also helps you get used to the
scenery zipping by at an alarming rate.
'cos That's what it's all about at the Ring. Driving a good line and using
all of the track. If you push yourself to the very limit this track will
bite you, so it's a matter of working with it to go as fast as you can at
98%.
Anyhow, trust me, you will begin to see "through" the sections better in
F1C. Along with some setup improvement (care to try some of my current
ones?), it helped me to knock another 6 seconds off my times in GPL.

I haven't loaded *any* mods for it yet. I had serious problems trying to load
a couple of JB's mods for another game, so I've been leery of mods ever since.
:-(
That's something I still have to work on, but I don't know how. Looking at the
replay, it's very obvious that I don't use all the track. But when I'm
driving, it seems like I'm already at the edge. I think it's a perception
problem, and I've noticed it in all the games I play. However, I don't have
that problem in real life - I can put my car *exactly* where I want it. It's
just something wrong in the games... :-(

It won't happen. You won't be braking with your left foot because you
will need it to work the clutch. Once that motion is burned in your
sub-conscious, it is hard to shake. It actually makes it harder to go
the other way, from a manual to an auto. I have (on more than one
occasion, sadly) completely locked all four wheels in an automatic
because I tried to disengage the non-existant clutch by stomping on
the brake pedal with my left foot.

So the games are to blame, are they ;)
Perhaps you need to get a bigger monitor, or sit closer to it. I noticed
I'm losing vision and perception if I don't get me nose close enough to
the old tube.
I'm not surprised you can put your car where you want it in real life
though. There, you tend to get excellent 3D (force! ;) feedback and,
most importantly, you've probably never driven your real car to the
very, very limit like we do in GPL et al. And *that's* when it starts
to get difficult.

processing the limited information I get from the creeen efficiently.
I have problems in the games even at slow speed. I can't run the proper line
and use all the track even in an F3 car.
I *have* driven a Skip Barber car before, and was able to hit the marks fine
with that. That's probably as close to the limit as I get in GPL.

I recently got a manual transmission car, I've been driving standard for
probably 20 years solid. Anyway, having been a two footed sim driver I can
say that it took very little time to get comfortable using a clutch again.
The *REAL* problem is that now I really want a three pedal setup for sim
racing :-(

TSW2mod - Mine has 3 pedals. I got that one on purpose(more realism?), but I
never got comfortable enough with my driving to deal with the clutch as
well...<g>

Man, that website is making me drool :-)~ I still have to upgrade my pc to
a decent gaming system before I can even begin to think about that kind of
layout of pedals or a controller system.
