What's cooking in Noonans' kitchen?

Dave Noonan's plans and the unfinished GPaL utility

A question about Dave Noonan's next project turned into a discussion of GPaL, a long-promised GPL utility by Jack Rambo that never appeared. Andre Warringa mockingly called Rambo a liar and fraud, while Remco Moedt and others defended him, citing his earlier Nail That Track online series and reported hard-drive and personal problems. Others recalled how popular Nail That Track had been.

It's been a while since we've heard something about the man. I wonder what he's going to come up with next. Is he the one,... (Yes he is the One but that's not what I'm trying to say here, so I'll continue my sentence) Is he the one that's working on Suzuka? Alison? Ed? Phil? You guys know more don't you?

<G> That approach is fine by me. I'd much rather be pleasantly surprised with a quality release than be disappointed by an overhyped POS or vaporware. I think we all know what that refers to.

Actually, someone brought up the idea that Jack could have been met some misfortune. There was genuine concern from a few people who actually hadn't thought of that, myself and Andre included. But Jack popped up on the group, said he was fine, but just hadn't had time to 'finish' the program. Then he vanished again. Others offered to help, or even take over development, but never heard anything, AFAIK. Who knows anymore...? Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Technically, Jack IS a liar. He said that GPal would be out on a certain date. It wasn't. That makes him a liar. A fraud is someone who promises something they can't (or won't) deliver. Again, that description DOES fit Jack. Now the reasons WHY it isn't out can be speculated about and discussed, but both points are currently factual and correct. Personally, I've written the program off. If it ever sees the light of day, and does what was promised, I'll be one of the first people offering congrats, thanks, whatever. Oh come on Remco, it was all in good fun. I was looking forward to GPaL, and I was very disappointed after the release date got delayed a couple of times (understandable) and that suddenly Jack disappeared without letting us know what would happen to GPaL (not understandable after he hyped it so much). I was on the beta-tester/distributer team, he mailed me that there only was a problem with the installerer, and that it would took him a couple of hours extra to solve that problem. Last thing I heard from him, he also never replied to my emails after that. Maybe Jack was too optimistic and realized that he promised us a little bit too much, that he couldn't make his promises become reality, but disappearing from the scene after all the hype was without any style, and was asking for reactions like these. If he simple would have admitted that he couldn't finish GPaL, for whatever reason, everybody would have understand, and I'm sure many would have offered help to finish GPaL. I can understand your reaction, calling Jack a liar and a fraud sounds harsh, but I hope you can understand my reaction when people still ask about GPaL, people stumble upon the GPaL site (GPaL is allmost finished, sign the mailing list!) and keep asking about it, while Jack doesn't appear here anymore. Your statement that I can't comment on the whole GPaL case because I didn't release something for the GPL community (I think I offer my help often enough actually) doesn't make any sense to me at all by the way. No, I never tested any version. I can't remember exactly what the planning was, but as far as I can recall Jack would mail a couple of people, including me, a copy of GPaL before it was released to the public, to do some quick beta testing on various systems. On the evening when we should receive the beta version, he mailed us all that it would take him a couple of hours to fix a little problem with the installer, and that he would mail it within 4 (or so) hours. I stayed up until 7 AM, checking my mail every 5 minutes... I got just a little bit mad when I never heard from him after that... Andre > >-peter

He was too busy with his new job he said to be precize. Again, in his last mail he sent me, he told me that GPaL was ready, and that he only had to sort out the installer problem. That should be possible in a year, even if you have such a busy job?

I meant, it can be very frustrating to create something for free, only to be critizised...you only know how that feels when you've been in that situation yourself. BTW, I'm not defending Jack's actions here. I just thought that calling Jack a liar and fraud in public isn't fun anymore.... Remco

Ok, I didn't understand that you meant it that way. I can imagine very well how that would be. Yet, if Jack would have handled things differently (sorry guys, I promised too much, can't hold those promises) it would have been a completely different story than the way he handled things now (ie not responding at all). >BTW, I'm not defending Jack's actions here. I just thought that >calling Jack a liar and fraud in public isn't fun anymore.... Ok, that was a little bit out of line (just a little bit, mind you). Jack was a nice fellow, one of the more prominent figures in the GPL scene. I just can't understand why he doesn't respond here on RAS at all. He knows people are waiting and wondering about GPaL, no matter how busy he is, surely he can tell us something? By the way, he posted this post on 22/9/99: I understand that there has been some speculation, but does anybody know whatever happened to that GPaL thing? Fraud is: 1. The intentional misrepresentation of a material fact. 2. Made for the purpose of a specific person relying on it. 3. That specific person did, in fact rely on it. 4. By relying on it, that specific person suffered a loss. These four elements must be present to prove fraud "in the U.S.". Bill Yowell EldredP wrote:

I'm in a minority that feel sorry for Jack. He was close(ish) to completing what looked a useful utility then circumstances changed & he wasn't able to devote the time to finish it. Once his self imposed deadlined was missed he appeared too embarassed to appear on RAS. Once it was clear he had to devote his time elsewhere, GPaL was so delayed that RAS turned against him. Without the resources of a games developer who does it for a LIVING to complete it he was hounded off of RAS as some sort of villain - too shamed to contribute as he had before. For sure he could have handled it differently but perhaps his perfectionism and belief that he had let down the GPL community forced him into a self imposed exile and silence in response to the stream of questions as to its development. For sure shit happens - but lets put it into perspective. A GPL enthusiast promises a utility written as a hobby for no reward. When life takes a twist & he fails to complete it his "buddies" in the community call him a liar & a fraud and he is no longer welcome. Hardly the most understanding approach. The fact that the GPaL still does the rounds suggests either Jack had a good idea or is a handy joke topic to throw in when nothing else is going on. The latter seems a shade harsh but unfortunately is probably our world here in RAS. Aggression tends to fail to gain co-operation in my experience. Then again I happen to have had the pleasure of exchanging many e-mails with Jack over prior to his disapperance from the GPL scene which I guess either clouds or sharpens my judgement depending on your point of view. I remember the Nail That track thing Jack used to do , and at one time it was so popular that there were people waiting outside the race in case there was an opening, I don't even remember what gpal was supposed to do , it would've have been a bonus whatever it's purpose , it is distressing to see people attack an individual who gave his time when it was available to give , I personally hope he and his family are well and prosperous. Why doesn't he release what he's done(code, notes, etc) so that others could continue? The utility was going to be free, so Jack wouldn't be losing any compensation. I'm sure he could copyright(or whatever) what he has to be assured of getting the credit due. Well??? Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? My understanding is life took such a twist for Jack that hobbies were put on hold - firmly in the belief that they would be picked back up. My further understanding is that pressures on time took an even further twist & he was oblivious to the posts on RAS. After running NTT he probably had a mailbox full to ignore as well. Sometimes life gets in the way of our sims :) > Well??? Who knows Eldred? Tony

Wll as you rightly point out the initial reaction wasn't anger. After the enforced(?) period of silence if Jack did have an opportunity to revisit RAS then the reaction to the whole GPaL launch was less than friendly in some quarters. I've probably said more than enough :) NTT - the infamous Nail The Track series - initially with invited drivers from around the world, it culminated in a mad fortnight when Jack ran three series - America, Europe and Australasia. The series ran with registered drivers with heats and finals in each series. The aim was to create a world auto sim association whose drivers were all licensed and the races governed by appointed officials of the said body. The three series would evolve to a world final. The concept was to treat sim racing in the same light as real racing, with a recognised ruling body which ensured fair play and guaranteed a quality of driving (not necessarily the fastest drivers) on a global scale only previously available in small private leagues. With all the organisation that goes with running such a body. Jack was considering this as potential job - running the overall series with aid from associates in the three continents, financially rewarded by a driver registration scheme which would benefit both the sim racing community by providing a professional body and pay Jack a wage. The "mad" fortnight saw Jack run NTT in three continents EVERY DAY as he guaged whether he could somehow create his dream governing body and make a living for himself & his family. Reality finally slapped him the face as it became clear the sim racing community was too small, and too reluctant to pay for such a service. So the NTT series collapsed as the exhausted Jack finally had to give up his dream to manage a sim racing body on a full time basis. It all sounds a bit bizarre now. No doubt from a business perspective it was very naive but somehow in this business orientated world it had a refreshing innocence in approach. The NTT series was sorely missed as a genuine world championship, and Jack made many friends on RAS in the process - many will remember those NTT announcements, and the NTT races had a popularity seldom equalled. You're KIDDING, right? That sounds like too much work for about *10* people...<g> But, I'd say that 98% of GPL(for example) drivers wouldn't pay. The hotshoes would scare them away. I refuse to pay for something I don't have a chance in HELL of winning... :-) Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? The aim was to provide a professional organsiation for sim racing as we have for real racing. Now if you want to start racing you start at a local club not F1 - NTT recognised that. Paying for it is the big stumbling block. IMHO Jack never saw the GPL community as an opportunity to get rich - but (perhaps optimistically) could provide sufficient income (probably with other ventures) to enable him to do it. He proved he could run the thing but the reaction to payment was luke warm. Most of us don't expect to pay for the work provided by an enthusiast community. I think it is more pyschological than financial - how many of us blow money on at least one duff title a year in the optimistic belief it will be good - in our quest for improving our hobby. Whereas spending money on an existing product (track converter excepted) goes against the grain. If you consider the value each title you buy judged by the hours you have played it then playing GPL seems remarkable value! I sometimes wonder that some serious GPL add-ons could be created if RAS clubbed together and employed some programmers or rewarded the spare time enthusiasts. It is quite possible a number of them are self employed and could give more time if they got paid for the time they lose for working elsewhere. Just some thoughts... Tony

Just we could have more time devoted to their creation, and maybe develop GPL into a GPL 1.5 or something :) What the sim community has done out of enthusiasm has to be applauded.
