I'm in the market for a new car and have narrowed my choices down to four,
but am having a hell of a time deciding between them. I've done lots of
background reading and research but I'm looking for some more feedback.
Opinions please on the following cars, particularly by those who have owned
them. Stories, good or bad, things to watch out for, etc.
All cars are in good shape, have had them checked over by a reputable
mechanic, no accidents, all stock with no mods. Test driven them all, liked
them all for different reasons. All prices in Canadian dollars (roughly
multipy by 2/3 to get a very approximate $US). At the moment, I'm leaning
towards the Impreza, but nothing concrete.
1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS, 5 speed, fully loaded. $20K
1998 Acura Integra LS, 5 speed, fully loaded. $17K
1996 Toyota Celica GTS, 5 speed, fully loaded. $16K
1990 Nissan 300 ZX (non turbo), 5 speed. $16K

Off-topic: choosing between four sporty cars
Steven Dickson asked for owners' views on a Subaru Impreza 2.5RS, Acura Integra, Nissan 300ZX and a Toyota before buying. Most recommended the Subaru for its all-wheel drive and reliability. Bruce Kennewell's scornful reply drew criticism, and he later apologised.

Automated summary.
And it's a great rally car too :)

P.S. I bought my car because it was a hell of a lot of fun to drive,
looked pretty sharp, and got a big-ass discount thanks to a family member!

What I do when it comes to making a major expense is to get as much
information as I can, from as many disparate sources as I can, digest it,
and then and only then come to a final decision.
Nowhere did I ask anyone to make a decision for me. I didn't ask "Which of
these cars should I buy?" I'm just looking for feedback, preferably from
first hand experience, re: the pros and cons of each of the cars listed.
Since the focus of this newsgroup is cars, and since I read this newsgroup
regularly and have a rough idea of who the posters are, I thought this would
be an appropriate place to ask. Are the letters submitted to the various
special interest or owner's sites any more or less valid?

FWIW, here in the UK Subaru consistently top the JD Power table. The
Impreza loses points for poor fuel economy, but is pretty much flawless
elsewhere. The dealers have a good reputation too.

I have one of the few 2.5 RS's in my town...constantly getting looks
at it from others. Clutch engagement is VERY tight and economy isn't
the greatest...but if you have any sort of inclement weather, the AWD
and limited slip rear diff will make you a believer.

very favourable climate. Don't even consider the Nissan.

I'm hoping to find a good Impreza GT-Turbo in the next months but they are
hard to find in Belgium.
If I where you I would certainly go for the Impreza.

Whoa . . . bit over-the-top there, Bruce. What's wrong with asking for
input from a (possibly) knowledgeable crowd? The fellow asks for
"[s]tories, good or bad, things to watch out for, etc." . . . Although some
might question the relevancy of the query to this particular newsgroup
community, I'd say one of the good things *about* community, broadly
speaking, is the variety of opinions one might get--some of which may even
be helpful.

Best value would appear to be the Acura. The 300ZX will kill you with
the cost of parts and repairs when necessary. Call around to the
various dealers and/or parts houses and ask 'em what a new alternator,
A/C compressor and fuel injector costs. I was thinking about a Mazda
RX-7 untill I did that... (an we race one, but $1200.00 for a new A/C
compressor? Forget it!)

I'm surprised that nobody has said to go for the Toyota. Based on price and
reliability, I'd would have figured it as one of the top choices. I'd figure
the Nissan at the bottom of the list. The other 3 all being good cars, it
would be a personal decision based on whether you are most interested in
style, performance or reliability.
So, what sim do you plan on driving it in? Will it install without errors?
Does it come with a female navigator?

You have stated that you've driven them, have had them checked, have read up
on their good and bad points and yet you _still_ cannot arrive at a
decision!
What is it that you are looking for....someone else to take the blame if you

Personally, I forego all the cars listed for a nice early 60's Alfa. Why
peeps favor new cars when such character can be had for less money (tho' for
more work)--that's my pet peev.

Heck, I wasn't going to respond, but someone's gotta stick up for the Z!
I've got a '96 Z (2nd owner) and love it. IMO there's not much out there
that's got it's style.
Let's see, that Impreza $20K CDN, which converts to what, around $13-
$14K US? If I had that kind of money, I'd be looking around at used
4th generation Camaro Z28's...you could probably get a nice '95 or '96
model for that price. Not necessarily the most reliable, the most well-
made, the smoothest, best on wet roads, and definitely not economical,
but they're FAST. Simply FAST. Only one of those cars that could even
think of hanging with a Z28 would be that Impreza, and only because of
the AWD, so you can launch harder and better on low-traction surfaces.
It'd be smoke in the rearview after about a hundred feet though. No
real reason to buy one aside from the fun factor and the speed - they
pretty much suck for anything else (back seat is small, economy is
generally average except for 6-speed models on the freeway, 25 MPG!)
but who cares when the only stock cars that can beat you are things
like Porsches, Vettes, Vipers, and modified Mustangs, older F-bodies,
and heavily modified imports like the Civic, Integra, Impreza, etc...

Yeah, IN A STRAIGHT LINE. Judging from what the original choices were,
the original poster wants something that can actually make a corner.

The key difference is that the Mazda will never, ever, need a new
A/C compressor - the components they use are incredibly high
quality.
BTW - Why would a race car require an Air
Conditioning compressor? (I apologise in advance if A/C stands
fro something other then "Air Conditioning".)

I was looking for a nice, sporty, affordable car for my wife to drive.
The logic was, "Well, considering we have all these connections in the
Mazda racing community, we probably ought to look into an old RX-7.
We could probably get a terrific deal on one with some minor problem
and fix it cheaply."
I don't discount that most componentry is of high quality, but I'm
talking about a 15+ year old sports car here and, believe it or not,
they get used and abused and important stuff wears out. Everything
eventually wears out, no matter how high the quality.
One thing about S. Florida. If a car doesn't have functioning A/C,
it's not worth *anything* for resale.

Impreza without a doubt. The Integra is also pretty nice, but utterly
outclasses (in driving terms) by the Impreza. The Subaru also benefits
from good build, reliability etc. I found it to be a bit "plasticky"
which I could have lived without, but a joyous four hour drive up to
the highlands of Scotland demonstrated it's benefits. Here the main
roads are two lane (one each way), so overtaking endless trucks,
caravans and pensioners is mandatory. The Subaru was awesome in that
regard, pulling strongly in any gear. Once in the highlands the roads
are tight, twisty and bumpy, and again the power delivery, handling
and roadholding were exceptional.
I'd definitely go for another.
Cheers!

Easy way to make corners...stomp the gas and hold the wheel where you hope
to go =)
Integras and AWD Eclipses I can see outhandling an F-body, but in stock form
both are so underpowered compared to a Z28 it's not even funny or worth
trying, and the day that showroom-stock Civics can beat showroom-stock
Camaros I will kill myself. IMO, almost all Japanese cars SUCK. They have
NO personality, not to mention a nice little thing called low-end torque
that comes from displacement and only displacement. There are a few that
are cool, like turbo 300ZX's, RX7s, NSX's (man! lotta Xs!!!), and those
Imprezas they run in the rallies, but the vast majority of them are just
lame. And the day that Vipers, Vettes, and 911s get down into the F-Body
price range, I will buy one =)
There simply isn't a faster stock car in that price range in any way, shape,
or form. Normally more speed equals more money but in the case of the
Camaro is more speed for not much more money.
