GPLEA releases the Pants Ring motor bowl joke track

Phil Flack announced the GPLEA's 'Pants Ring Motor Bowl', a joke test track shaped like a giant bowl in which cars can ride high on the walls. Players enjoyed it, swapping lap times and setup tricks for riding the rim. It prompted speculation that banked tracks such as old Monza could be built for GPL.

Crikey!! A wall of death!! You can even race in the sky:) I keep bottoming out though when I build up speed which causes a major loss of control. I have set everything as hard as possible and it's still scraping the tarmac. Anyway thanks for the track! How many turns does it have?? (Sarcasm aimed at North American Ovals who manage to make four turns out of an Oval with only two definable turns yet ignore the fact that the start finish straight is a curve!) I don't want to defend oval racing (I hate it), but having a single turn containing two separate corners can also be found in GPL. Check out turns 1 in both Kylami and Mexico. I would describe both as "compound" corners. The same can be said of oval racing. Oval race tracks may not be your cup of tea, but your argument here doesn't hold much water. When I race at the upper part of the track, my car crashes BIG TIME... I raised the car to 5" but still crash... Big fun however! A little taste of how the Monza banking will be? Andre On Sat, 22 Apr 2000 21:12:35 GMT, Shaun Robinson <[email hidden]> wrote:

This track is utterly terrible. 1. No braking points on the entry to T1 discernable in the racing groove. 2. No Spanish bullfighter Easter eggs 3. No Christian And lion Easter eggs. 4. British flag is totally inappropriate for a counter clockwise track 5. No winged carset available for running above the track. 6. No web page available as yet for the most stylish stunts (Hmm. That's an idea) 7. Impossible to get the necessary life insurance required by my team to run here MS <G> "Mike Barlow" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%qtM4.8170$[email hidden]... > 9:51? Use Race Engineer, you can get your front springs up to 300lbs and the rears up to 400lbs, and you'll still be bottoming. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C.

Like I said I was just being sarcastic, and just pointing out that I found the descriptions odd, it wasn't an anti-oval thing. I actually quite like oval racing, I think the CART series has a nice balance of oval vs. road circuits. I tried for over an hour to figure out how to get quick enough to go under 12 seconds and not have the bottom of the car start scraping, but to no avail. My best is 11.4 and its usually the lap before I take off skywards. :( I've tried easing off when I hear the scraping, but then I'm back over 12 seconds again and it doesn't seem to matter one jot which car I try, or what line I take. So I'm 3 seconds off the pace of 8 to 9 seconds. This is ridiculous. :(

I'm not sure if what I'm doing is even relevant. I'm not driving the line on the flat area around the bottom, which is what I assume the track was meant for. I'm riding the edge around the top of the bowl. Where are you doing it ? [email hidden] (Casper Gripenberg) wrote in <ktLM4.1310$[email hidden]>:

Simply put, it's as though you're driving around the inside of an huge bowl (hence the name of the track). Its a short track - if you're a NASCAR fan, imagine Bristol on steroids. While the "racing line" is drawn toward the bottom, you're able to flit about the rim of the bowl perpendicular to the plane of the ground. It reminds me very much of those threads about modern F1 cars having sufficient downforce at speed to drive upside down in a tunnel. And believe me, if you don't have GPL its well worth getting even without the benefit of this track. :-)

A little taste of how the Monza banking will be? Say, do you have any inside info or was that just an intuitive guess? That Monza banking reference has me wondering - after all, it is labeled as a test track. Monza with banking would be brilliant! But isn't there some problem with having the course double over itself? Seems to me that there was quite a bit of talk about this some time ago.

Hey look the AI works at ovals! It would be nice to remove the infield and put asphalt instead. (Dunno if it's possible, guess not) We would finish a lap everytime we make a donut. Would be a weird view at VROC...

Top of the bowl. Down to 9.33. I don't think it's possible to go much faster. But it doesn't really require any Alien driving skills, that is true. The trick is the setup and keeping the car straight. Once you've figured it all out you've been there done that, and can go back to train at the Ring :) Regards, Casper
