A few random comments:
It has sluggish FPS on my PIII-600/256mb/Voodoo3 . Not terrible,
but certainly not very fluid. I think there will be a lot of negative
comments about the graphics performance.
Huge deadzone using my TSW that I had to overcome by using CTFJ
and tweaking the various settings in the game. I am still not satisfied
with the steering.
Nice handling, and decent physics overall, but still has that nagging
sluggishness that I haven't been able to get rid of at this point.
Much better physics model than SCGT, and certainly the closest
thing we have seen to GPL to date. Does it surpass GPL? I don't think
so, but it ain't bad and it is *certainly* no arcade game.
The graphics engine, etc. is DEFINITELY an updated version of SCGT.
The file names' extensions, replay style, etc. Same thing.
Some parts of it look great, others look unfinished. -Incredible- amount
of jaggedness/pixelization on the pit crew, for example. Not a biggie, but
it makes you wonder about the rest of it.
Tracks look nice. Special effects (smoke, particles, etc.) certainly
not overblown. Nice damage modeling with bent control arms, wheels
wobbling, wings flying off.
Your manager's voice, etc., is good. Sometimes annoying, but overall a
nice job. Sounds are far too weak. The good news is that if it is truly
the SCGT engine, that problem should be able to be corrected.
The cars are the 2000 season cars.. doh. It has the Indy track, the
Jaguars, etc., etc.
Car 3d modeling looks about the same as SCGT, in my opinion. Not
incredible, not bad.
Drivers have tiny heads. Is that a new regulation?
Probably not since the heads weren't grooved.. hehe.
Setup options GALORE. Beyond GPL in qunatity, etc.. This will be a
tweaker's dream. Also, you can SAVE your setups, which couldn't
be done in SCGT.
One last whine... Remeber how SCGT would bring your car to a
screeching instant halt if you dared touch the grass? Well, they
fixed that. Grass, curbs etc. feel great. The problem is, if you
visit a gravel trap, you will slide like you're on ice... ;)
Also, it is VERY hard to get out as you spin around and around aimlessly.
on the ?icy? gravel.
F1-2000 is CERTAINLY worth a look for anyone who has a remote
interest in racing sims and has a powerful system.
NOTE: To those who would whack me for downloading a warez version
of F1 2000. Remember EA's Nascar Revolution? I bought it, and kept
it based on the promise that it would be fixed. It wasn't.
Any other questions... ?

Could you get an acceptable frame rate by limiting # of opponents ?
Equal or better than F1RS or MRGPS2 or whatever it is called.
Nice review rreved.
So how is the Indy track?
Also, how is the AI?

The framerate is just... sluggish. Maybe its the control sensitivity
or maybe its just me. Also, the effects, such as dirt, smoke, etc. seem
to momentarily cause a slowdown.
The framerate/sluggishness? Both of the titles you mentioned
respond to controls better and are smoother than F1-2000.
I also don't like either title you mentioned... ;)
As far as the overall sim, it is FAR better then the ones you
mentioned. No comparison, in my opinion.

It is VERY strange driving around that thing... :) It looks pretty
realistic but I haven't seen the new track, in real life..
I'm still trying to sort the steering and playing with graphics
options. In a 'quick race' I did earlier while testing, they seemed
to at least have some intelligence. I don't know enough yet
to make a better evaluation.

Solution for me is: unchecking using pollinterupt in joy calibration
screen. Not very good FF though.

This is important for me, because in GP2 I saved every 3-5 laps and drove
full-length races with that. GPL was too hard to do long races, so I did
only
hotlaps all the time.
Jochen
Ditto... using v3.25 drivers, you?
Jan.

I use the 3.30 drivers, and only get ff when driving on curbs. Don't
forget to turn the spring settings on (I use 150%) in the LWFF
properties, that helps a bit. But the ff is a big letdown.

With all options on, in a race, it is unplayable. (It's good in
practice mode) When I used 800x600, no specular highlighting, lots of
medium settings, fps was good. Didn't harm the graphics much, IMO. Oh,
I have a C300A@450, with V3-3000, 320 Mb.
>Huge deadzone using my TSW that I had to overcome by using CTFJ

The controler setup seems aimed to a joystick. The game failed to spot
splitaxis on my Hyperstim. Also, I didn't like the fact that for every
input you configure, you first have to press a key, then the
controller.
>Nice handling, and decent physics overall, but still has that nagging

I didn't have problems with the steering.
>Much better physics model than SCGT, and certainly the closest

I had the feeling that the car was too soft. Granted, I didn't adjust
the settings, nor did I ever drive a F1 car....I also had the feeling
that the feedback was overdone...I don't know if that's good or bad.
The 3D sound did a good job to determine which wheel was locked,
best tiresqueel feedback I ever heard..
The default AI settings are very easy. In my first qualify I did, at
Monza, I already was 10 seconds faster then the AI. I must say that I
like the way GPL does the AI difficulty more....Now you match the AI
to your skill, instead of practicing to match the AI...
About the AI, their performance doesn't seem related to the real life
drivers. A Prost on 3th, McLaren and Ferrari in the midpack....hmmm.
Also, when you end a qualifying session before it's over, they are
suddenly 15 seconds faster. Seems a calculation error.
Another AI thing. <g> You can "do" a formation lap. Well, you don't
actually drive yourself, but get some cinematic presentation of the
field while your car is controlled by the computer. Bummer. The one
time I tried the formation lap, half of the field crashed, or spinned.
While my car was waiting (on pole, and man it took hours...), some AI
car pitted, and the manager told me they where on a 1 stop strategy.
<g> Smart man. Because the game was waiting until all cars did arrive,
the situation that an AI car pitted, and drove away to start his race,
occured. The rest of the field still was on the grid...
The manager is also telling me things during qualifying I don't want
to know. But there are different settings possible what he
does/doesn't say, so maybe you can adjust that. I awaite the release
version with the manual before I start tweaking these things.
>Tracks look nice. Special effects (smoke, particles, etc.) certainly

IMO the smoke was too much. I can't believe you get that much smoke in
your face when you lock the front wheels.
>Your manager's voice, etc., is good. Sometimes annoying, but overall a
>nice job. Sounds are far too weak. The good news is that if it is truly

Yeah, apart from the tyre feedback, the engine sounds just plain bad.
The manager, hmmmm. Voice is good, but the man has no brain. In a
short race, 5 laps at Monza, he told me that someone, who just came
into the pits, was on a 3 stop strategy....yeah, right. (This with
normal fuel/tyre use settings)
>The cars are the 2000 season cars.. doh. It has the Indy track, the
>Jaguars, etc., etc.
Yeah, that's great. I thought the tracks are a bit dull, more as if
you're pre-season testing. No atmosphere..
>Car 3d modeling looks about the same as SCGT, in my opinion. Not

It's decent. Something you won't notice much while batling, IMO.

Hehe
>Setup options GALORE. Beyond GPL in qunatity, etc.. This will be a

Yeah, lot's of options....but....I didn't see any telemetry, nor did I
see tyretemps. Also, in a Grand Prix, you don't have to deal with
tyresets. It seems that the suply is unlimited.
About saving your setups, it's possible. But man, why this way?
You can't see which setup is loaded, all setups for all tracks are
visible (no filters), and I don't think the last setup used is loaded.
You can't say "save setup", where the current setup just uses the same
name as it was when you loaded it, you have to use the "save as"
function, retype the name (no selection possible). You have to hit
enter, and push the save button. Sigh...

Yeah, this they did really good! It's so much fun to get that curb
right, and just hit that last piece of dirt before entering the track
again. Too bad the replays aren't that good. No slider to select a
certain spot in the replay, no timer, only Begin/End/fast
forward/backward. And the sound was broken...
>Also, it is VERY hard to get out as you spin around and around aimlessly.
>on the ?icy? gravel.
Hehe, I like it...maybe not real, but you really get that "Oh no, the
gravel trap!" feeling.
>F1-2000 is CERTAINLY worth a look for anyone who has a remote
>interest in racing sims and has a powerful system.
Yes, there are flaws, but it's one of the better sims.
Some other things.
When qualifying, you only see a list of all drivers with their times,
howmany laps driven, if they're out or in the pits, or are crashed.
No viewing of the session, no information about tracksection timing,
no overview of all the laptimes they did. Not very immersive.
Also, no flags, pacecar (in one race a pile of cars where on the
middle of the track the entire race.,..), or weather.
Remco
It makes you wonder who the hell are testing these games. On a 7 lap race and
using a 3 pitstop strategy. Please!!! Mr Crammond please release Gp3
soon!!!!

The first
having been SportsCarGT. They've only worked on F1-2000 since March
of 1999. Crammond has been working on his for quite some time now.
ISI will be following this title up with F1-2001 and F1-2002 since EA
has the license for a few years. Hopefully F1-2000 will be a good
base to work from and we should see big improvements in future
versions. But I too and looking forward to GP3 now more than ever.

The AI is MUCH improved over SCGT. There is no comparison.
