When's the last time a Formula One car did a GPL-style powerslide? (rain racing doesn't count. heh) GPL models the bias-ply tires used in racing until recently that could slide and slip around easily and not give up much grip. The modern day Formula One tire doesn't slide much. It just suddenly loses traction. I have heard many F1 drivers mention it actually. If you barely push the envelope too far, you'll spin suddenly. Besides, ground effects don't work when you're sideways. :) (CPR isn't exactly a good comparison as the physics model lacks in the spin department methinks. Why does the car always spin to the inside and never slide back out and hit the wall on ovals?) Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited http://simcrashes.cjb.net
I agree completey w/you, but aren't they still using bias-ply tyres?

Er, Michelin introduced radials in what, 1977? Goodyear (and other successors) switched to radials, . . .um. . . not long after. When, group? --DK

Whereabouts (which gate) is the demo being shown. I'm going on Saturday, and really shouldn't miss this! Did the graphics seem cartoony in color or more realistic? Bazza Berno <[email hidden]> wrote in article <OwIx4.11303$[email hidden]>...

As i posted earlier on I went to the melbourne gp today with the intention of giving gp3 a whack. I was later than I hope and the crowd was pretty big already. There were 2 hyperstimulators facing big screen tvs. Unfortunately the tv's and cocpits were pretty well worn, one wheel suffereing from big spikes. And the big tvs were dark and had horrible horizontal lines. The graphics were nothing different from the gamestar video. In fact what I saw of the demo explained a lot about the screen shots going around the net with 2 prost cars damon in a jordan and a stewart. The game crashed a number of times and when starting the spalsh screen said: "Gp3 Demo January 2000. HARDWARE ACCELERATED." There were no menus or options you were simply put on the starting grid in a prost with the 3 other cars at monaco. So those screens from the german site were definately hardware accelerated. Some of the textures werent filtered if you crashed into a wall you could see no filtering on the textures. So that was the end of the argument of software or hardware shots. Overall the graphics were smooth, there was some stutter in parts though. Tv's made it hard to judge sharpness, I was told by the marketing guy from the gamestar video that it was in a 780x??? res on pIII500's with G800 video cards. Whatever they are? The sound was gp2's as said in the pcgamer preview new samples are ready to go in. Gameplay was a lot like gp2. I felt familiar with the handelling pretty quick. Unfortunately the lovely half naked assistants werent too sure what to do when i asked for steering, gear, and brake help to be switched off but I eventually got to drive that way. The cars slide more and take a bit longer to stop, I think the sliding has been improved a lot on gp2 and is less drastic. Funny enough I didnt once look like loosing the car while turning in under braking. GP2 was real tough in this area and I was quite surprised at how nobody lost control going into a corner. Touching the wall has more drastic effects and this is where most people spun including myself. Overall I have to say it felt like gp2 with lots of little improvements, besides gp2 didnt need any drastic measures in gameplay department IMHO. I left my 4 go's of this demo looking forward even more so to the unlikely release date. I only wish I had all runs with steering help off. It is now switchable by F8 from in game and I done the best time of the day (1:19:**) with it off and could get a good fun run in. With steering help on I wasnt so happy and felt like it was pulling me onto the line. Hard to tell without trying keyboard but I think steering help has been changed a fair bit. Oh well theres more I could say but, if you want to know ask me? Berno.

Yeah man ,i was wondering what you thought of the driving model in gp3 Im gp2 if you drove with opposite lock help off,the car would go sidways for a second and the just spin out,it was a like an automated spin that you could never get back, unlike in GPL where the car can go extremely sideways and u can still get it back.I read somewhere that when the gp2 car got a little sideways the physics model stopped calculating the inertia and just sent the car into a canned spin so u could never do power slides or get the car back with a flick of the wrists,so i was wondering if you could comment on that. Also do the cars has inertia. IN GPL and even CPR if you go down the straight you can get the car to pendulem with a flew flicks of the wheel and spin out,in gp2 you couldnt it just stuck to the tarmac. Yes this has definately changed. Where I was talking about the difficulties of turning in under brakes in gp2 and the sudden unrecoverable spins. Gp3 seems to have more layers to its sliding as opposed to gp2 where I sometimes felt as though the car was put in lost grip mode or grip mode. You can do power slides, not sure of the full extent though as i had throttle help on but I could definately feel it under brakes. At lowes hairpin i stopped a bit late stayed on the brakes then flicked on the power which made the back end hang out, but a touch of opposite lock saved it. Not sure about the inertia as I didnt try what you said. I saw someone have a go with all help off and they done a few spins under acceleration but they didnt swerve. I will be going back to the gp tomorrow and the 2 days after so I will get the lovely ladies to turn it all off and swerve down the straight to see what happens. Will post about it. Ok cool ta,have fun:) Should try it with the throttle help off but Berno <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:AAKx4.11372$[email hidden]... > > Yes this has definately changed. This time the crowed was very big and i only got one shot and they werent turning off helps anymore claiming it upset the hyperstims calibration :( I swered from side to side down the straight and there was no pendulem effect I just zig zagged as I said all help including steering was on so no real help i guess.

I asked the guy running it and he said that you will be able to toggle between the moving wheel and a fixed display. We'll see I guess. Nick : If you happen to know... : Is the moving steeringwheel an option or unavoidable? : JoH : ======================================== : Jo Helsen EDP Operations BF Belgium : ========================================
