Super 1 Karting demo impressions

Midas Interactive released a demo of Super 1 Karting. Real kart racers found its handling icy, its steering laggy and its sense of speed poor, while others enjoyed the drifting and graphics. Users also fixed launch errors by updating DirectX, removed large deadzones, and explained that the choke enriches the mixture to cool the engine.

The super 1 Karting demo came out today by Midas interactive. Its quite fun and the graphics are ok. It has a sim and arcade mode. The sim mode is in the demo. You may want to try it, you can get it at avault or 3dfiles.

Just played the demo and erased it after 15 minutes of playing it. I've raced karts for 5 years now and they don't handle anything like that. The karts feel like there on ice, and you get no sense of speed at all. I know they aren't going 200mph but when your butt's 1 inch of the ground you get a better sense of speed than that. Thanks, Aaron Markham *Kart44* Kevin wrote: > The super 1 Karting demo came out today by Midas interactive. Its quite fun > and the graphics are ok. It has a sim and arcade mode. I'm not going to comment on the handling as I haven't raced real karts on tarmac yet, only those wussy ones at the local indoor kart track (on concrete), but I do agree I felt incredibly tall. The virtual me on that kart must be 2m05cm, at least. Also, I find it terribly unfair to be down on top speed without the option to change the setup to adjust. My best time is a 51.3 the game is ok, it's better then some other recently released games and it could be fun online. I do find the steering to be a little bit laggy and the power on oversteer at low speeds does seem a bit much. I think it will be better in the full version.

"driver feels like he's 2m tall." - dunno about that... seams ok to me. maybe it's just cause I'm a tall guy. I will say this though... nice grahics. Of what I've done so far.. nice AI... bump you around nicely. Nice User Interface... well done I think. I'm not really sure what the ***does but I think it's disabled in the demo along with a lot of other things. Maybe the ***enriches the fuel mixture to get more power but raises the engine temp and if you use it too much you'll blow/seize the engine?

Other way round I think... *** the engine when you're slowing down to cool it because you're running it lean to get power at high revs. But, I could be wrong. ;-) Jan. ----

In which area's, MaX? Just curious. I agree it needs work. Such as at the start it reminds me of NasRev, we don't have control over the kart until it crosses the start/finish line and half the time it's facing backwards plus when it starts it's in arcade view, this has to change. It would but nice to have a full pace lap under full player control or a option of standing starts. Also at the end of the race the computer takes over, I don't like that, I think the player should be the one to decide when the game should end. There is some collision detection problems. One time I touched wheels at 50mph and it threw me backwards or I went through a couple walls or other karts. The feeling of speed could be higher. More detail options, you can turn all the detail to low or off but there still seems to be a lot of track side objects on,ect.. The grass could be more slippery and bumpy. Grass shouldn't slow you don't that much but it should be hard to control. I'm not going to go into physics driving model because I don't know how "high" they were turned up or down for the demo. Plus the setup could have been out of whack which made it feel a little weird or "icy". But From what I remember of racing my friends kart it was very nimble and precise, you barely turn the wheel and it would really move, but in the game you can quickly crank the wheel left and right nothing would really happen, it felt sloppy and slow. If I did that in the real kart it would have really jolted me and probably if the seat isn't a good fit it could throw you out of the seat. But I do think it will be the best kart sim, but that's like saying N3 is the best Nascar Sim. ;)

After thinking about it that would make sense. Make the engine run rich with the ***and use the cool fuel to help cool down the engine.

What circuit is included in the demo? Buckmore Park? BTW .... in karting it is common to ***the kart at the end of a straight, by placing your hand over the opening of the air box. The puropse of this is to richen the fuel mixture, which helps lubricate the engine (2strokes have their oil mixed with the fuel) and also gives better acceleration out the corner. Marc

Years ago when I ran Enduro Karts, we use to increase the fuel mixture to lower the engine temps during the race. Basically you're doing the samething with the choke. Joel Willstein
Kenny, Normally you would put your hand over the air intake near the end of a long straight to richen the air/fuel mixture and hopefully keep the engine from "sticking" (piston seizing up in cylinder). If you've ever had a 100cc two-stroke stick on you at 50 mph with direct drive you'll know why you don't want it to happen! Wayne Hutchison
Alan, Standing starts aren't too common in karting as many of the 2-stroke classes use direct drive. Wayne Hutchison

Same here ! Huge deadzone, hopeless to drive ! Never could understand why they add any deadzone at all ??? Joergen
DjFIL, "Lack of grip"!?!?! It isn't the grip it's the physics engine. From what I can tell the kart doesn't turn on 4 wheels it just pivots like there's a pole stuck through the middle of it. Sorta like Papy's old physics engine for it's earlier games. Thanks, Aaron Markham *Kart44*

I know!! The steering in an actual kart is very, very sensitive. Just a minor turn of the wheel can send you around some pretty tight corners. Thanks, Aaron Markham *Kart44*

There is a deadzone adjustment in the directory. you can also modify the force feedback. the file is gp.cfg and userdata.txt.

I fully agree with you Graeme: again this is disappointing. Needs a lot of work to create a real karting simulation out of this demo... The physic engine seems very basic :when you lift throttle, the end should slide. Karting is a "throttling game"!!! Nothing like that in this demo. Plus i have a lot of loading from my Harddrive during driving. And finally it seems 3 axis wheel is not supported (i just have no brake!!!) Did they say SIMULATION???

Strange how many people seem to think it's like driving on ice. I thought the drift thru the corners was wonderfull - but then I had just come from doing laps of Monaco in Gpl which makes this Kart game seem sticky by comparison. The hardest thing for me was teaking out the enormous deadzone on my MS wheel - used CTFJ! Andrew. Alan Orton <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I had it happen once.... I makes the back end become the front end and the front end face backwards.... If it happens as your turning, the back end comes 'round. Doesn't do the chain much good either, assuming it held up through the initial lockup. :-) "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hehe. I have one of the crappiest connections to the net here with my humble 33k modem. Great aint it. I work for NTL, the company who will soon be making cablemodems widely available to the UK market and I can't get on the beta test project because I live 15 miles outside Guildford where the testing is going on. :-( MS "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

i've played it lots over of the weekend, and here's a few thoughts... Appallign out of the box demo controller setup. edit the f1.cfg and change the deadzone values. I don't think it supports 3 Axis? Make sure you turn off "auto-controller" configuration. The Demo itself is one of the annoyign midas, run once, and quit demo's- You get 3 Heats and then a race, but after each heat, must reload the game to continue. The karts seem to handle well- no setup in the demo, but in the full game- They do indeed indulge in slides- a loose rear end, but honestly, the steering is *so heavy* under force feedback, it's a real struggle to correct mid-corner- over corretion can take the most of the next straight :P due to the very heavy return to centre setting (on my Saitek R4 Force). - This can't be changed seemingly- no matter what Force Feedback settings were layed with, it was still very "heavy". Ai seems ok- a little malicious perhaps, but not too silly either- on the first lap going into the first hairpin, they can bunch up, and it's easy to slip up the inside. also, it'v possibel to really cut corners by going on the grass. No Grass slowdown- yipppee!! however, it does get a bit slippery. Track featured is buckmore park (kent, UK). From a vague look at their website, it seems a fair rendering. Buggy: Yeah, sadly, when ever i got to the "race" after the three heats. The game slowed right down- maybe 1/10 of real time, which is very strange as it has no more other karts than any of the heats- evry time i played it. Most annoying. Not sure why this happens. Had one GPF and crash when i collided with one of the advert signs. The collison detection is not good- i had a bad delay and then "vaulted" at great pace off in an opposite direction than one might suspect- one time i was even vaulted at very high pace to the lead of the heat! Still, i like it- i've been on the look out for a good kart sim for quite some time- this may not be quite it, but i like the genre, it easy to pick up and have fun with, & i'll no doubt pick it up on the 17th (if it ships.) Incidentally, i can;t find anyone who has it for pre-order yet in the UK, on or off-line. I emailed a few places, will let the group know if i find one on-line. Z. Best Kart game I ever had was "SuperKarts" published by *** about 5 or even 6 years ago? Graphics were good for its day, and handling was pretty good too, lots of sliding around. It had various karts with differing engine sizes, etc and you could buy parts to upgrade the kart, and it had about 16 tracks in all, placed all over the world. Great fun. 8-) *Peter* - http://www.cix.co.uk/~peterpc/home.html [address restored]
