Is GPL's Monza boring?

Asgeir Nesoen called 1967 Monza flat and boring compared with GPL's other tracks. Several agreed and ranked tracks by excitement, with the Nurburgring and Rouen at the top, while others defended Monza's close racing. The thread covered Fangio's 1957 Nurburgring drive and whether rain should be simulated, which most rejected.

... finding the Monza of 1967 boring as hell? I mean, it is flat, only three corners and very fast. Monza is the closest we get to oval racing here in Europe... How people can spend hundred of hours trying to brake that 1:26 barrier or whatever, is beyond me. When there are so many tracks driveworthy in GPL... And the hosts use it all the time... Strange. ---Asgeir---

Monza kind of levels the field because it's relatively easier overall than most of the other tracks. So you get more competitive, and therefore interesting, races online. L.S.
The layout of Monza is quite simple. The corners (there are 5 actually) aren't simple. After thousands of laps I still can't hit that magical 1:26 (barely can drive in the 1:27 actually) and that fascinates me. Driving some laps, comparing them again and again with GPLDump and ReplayAnalyzer... well, I can imagine that that sounds boring to some people, but I think that's what racing is all about. Finding those tenths of seconds. Don't get me wrong, I also drive and enjoy other tracks, especially the Ring is my favorite one, but hotlapping on the Ring isn't fun for me. Just 1 mistake, and you have to drive 8 long minutes again to try it again... Andre On Mon, 21 Feb 2000 14:01:35 +0100, Asgeir Nesoen

On Mon, 21 Feb 2000 14:01:35 +0100, Asgeir Nesoen >... finding the Monza of 1967 boring as hell? >I mean, it is flat, only three corners and very fast. Well, you are forgetting the Online obstacles. That is, the other 17 people who dance like spiders with each other in the air while I try to avoid them. Hockenheim (in more modern sims) sometimes gives me that impression. But in gpl, Silverstone, Rouen, Monaco, Kyalami, and a few others bore me more. I think because they are hard to get a good rhythm on (at least for me). And Mexico might be better except the tires pop up a tad late on my system- like, when you are right on them. Ruins it for me. I like Watkins Glen, Zandvoort, Monza, Spa... and I also like this new one, Osterring (sp), which has some very challenging braking to it- deep in curves, etc. And I don't mind the darn poles as much as the tires at Mexico! Anyway, Monza has something indefineable- I think it is in it's rhythm, which really allows one to lock in to it. Keep in mind Monza is fun online because it is not as chaotic for sparring with other cars, and passing is not too difficult. Re: ovals- I am not a fan of ovals racing- well, except for Indy and Michigan, perhaps- where a sort of "quantity is its own quality" thing takes over... but in general, I think they are racers tracks. They are all about the minutae of interaction with other drivers that is apparent from behind the wheel, but hardly apparent to the audience. And the idea of just trying to break records on ovals- or even qualifying- is too tedious for me.

When I first pulled out of the pits at Monza, I found it literally SCARY, not boring... (maybe it was the song of the Ferrari with the volume way too loud and the power I was supposed to do something with...) It's hard to explain, but it's very fast and very unforgiving at the same time - screaming down a long straightaway knowing there's a pretty tricky turn at the end of it, and that if you slow too soon, you may as well park it now and if you slow too late... well.... Hangin' the ass-end out around Ascari is a rush and approaching the old oval overpass is quite pucker inducing when you're in traffic or out of shape at all... I love it, and I'm still looking for 1:30.... gonna need stress counseling to shoot for 1:26 - <shudder> On Mon, 21 Feb 2000 14:01:35 +0100, Asgeir Nesoen

I agree !! I will NEVER join a Monza race. Who likes turning right only?? Spa (the old Spa) is bad also. Its a shame those are the 2 most popular tracks on VROC. IMO The Ring is by far the best, with Rouen and Mosport also ranking well.

It's fast? So is Spa. It's historic? So is the Ring. It makes for a close race? So does Silverstone. All of them more interesting by some way. Personally, I don't often dash around Monza. I'd put it ahead of only Zandvoort, Kyalami and Mexico in my playing frequency. It is, as you say, just soooo boring. -- David. You're not the only one. I don't like it much either. I remember when I was***starting out in GPL, I had some good battles there, but once you get down to the 28's everyone drives pretty much the same and the race turns into a parade. Almost like a modern F1 race. I dislike Kyalami for much the same reason. Monaco, Watkins Glen, and Mosport can also be parades, but at least it's easy to make a mistake on those tracks. -A

No, Asgeir, you're NOT alone! I agree. In order of E***ment Level (least exciting is #1) my tastes are:- 1. Monza 2. Silverstone 3. Monaco 4. Kyalami 5. Watkins Glen 6. Spa 7. Brands Hatch 8. Reading your opinion makes me realize that Monza is the only track which has is all: Easy to remember, fast, historic and close racing. Andre
Monaco one of the least exciting? I don't really like Monaco for online racing, too much accidents, but you surely can't say that Monaco is not exciting? That damn chicane makes my heart beat twice as fast every single time! I agree fully with the rest of the list. Yesterday I was hotlapping on the Ring. Had a beautiful fast lap, but blew it at the left-handed corner after the long straight. If I had taken that corner right, it would have been an 8:05-8:10 lap... now that was a thrill ride for me :) Andre Andre On Tue, 22 Feb 2000 18:54:39 +1100, "Bruce Kennewell"

I would say: 1. Monza 2. Silverstone 3. Spa 4. Mexico 5. Watkins Glen 6. Kyalami 7. Mosport 8. Monaco 9. ?sterreichring 10. Brands Hatch 11. Nrburgring 12. Zandvoort 13. Rouen I moved Nrburgring a bit up the list. It is just too long. Awesome. Lot's of excellent turns, succession of turns, it's got everything in there. If you are fast at Nrburgring, you'll be fast anywhere. But it is very difficult to work on driving technique there because of the non-repetitive nature of the track. Rouen is my favourite track, and it is really only the track that works very well with all car classes. Different dimensions with different Formulas. Thank god they used this track instead of the Bugatti track from -67! Monaco is one of my favourites, it is a track that suits my technique, and I have always been doing well there. In online races too, if you race with the right people. :-) GP length at Monaco??? I am in! :-))) And I'd probably want a GP length at the ring as well! I want online races with realistic damage!!! ---Asgeir---

I'm finding it very hard to improve beyond the 8:15 mark at the Ring, every time I've done 3/4 of the lap well, I get too tentative in the last section because I don't want to throw it all away! Well, if the chicane and that last hard corner (brake while turning) corner wouldn't be there, I'd fully agree with you, the rest of the track is also too slow for me. Or maybe I'm just driving too slow at Monaco :) Andre On Wed, 23 Feb 2000 07:44:02 +1100, "Bruce Kennewell"

Well....our tastes aren't too dissimilar! :-) I think that the reason I rate the N-ring ahead of Rouen is for the simple reason that one little error means either kaput or ***, only another 12 laps to go in which to recover from THAT mistake!! Indeed! The major difficulty, I think, is that it's very difficult to run 10/10's for the full 8 minutes. 8 minutes is almost 6 very hot laps around Monza, more than 7 full laps around the Glen, 2 laps around Spa, and 4 laps around Rouen. You might think of the 8 minutes as equal to running at record pace once around each of those other circuits, consecutively, without stopping for setup changes or to rest. :-) Another way to look at it, your 8:15 equates to "only" about 2 seconds slower per lap at the Glen; not bad for a compromise setup. Michael.

I am one of the maniacs who still do it in order to try and brake the famous 1.26.00 barrier. But my times have improved so much lately that I don't feel like giving up after so many hours training, so many laps to arrive to a setup I am comfortable with and etc. I never do more than 20 laps in one instance, and I always do a few laps at the Ring before going to Monza. That way it is like a rest to my arms and the track seems so easy to drive on, then 20 laps go very quickly. As for online racing, I've had my best races at Monza. It's a fast uncomplicated circuit that most people are able to master to a degree; having said that, most people are able to go the full length of a race without having too many crashes, and be consistent, since most of us started GPL at Monza (if you've read the manual that is...) I've tried several online races at the Ring, Mosport, Zandvoort and very rarely I did a lap without seeing someone off, crashes. Generally people tend to try and go faster online since the sense of competition is much more intense than offline, and sometimes I have to remind myself it is only a virtual race, and there's no need to feel the pressure. But the skills involved in taking a GPL car all the way to the finish line requires a lot of concentration, hence the pressure. I personally think Mona will still be the best "venue" for online racing for a while, until most people get better and more consistent on other tracks. In WinVROC the Monza races get full very quickly, I get the impression that people see a Monza race on, and they feel confident to join and a lot of them, irrelevant of what times they're hitting, think they can win it. As for me the only boring track in GPL is Monaco. I don't get any sense of speed there, and I can't be bothered to drive slow in GPL. I hate slow corners, or should I say I hate circuits full of slow corners. I played Monaco in all the other sims out there and enjoyed it thoroughly, but not in GPL. As for Mexico... Here's part of the Motorsport track test of the Ring: The track's first post-war Grand Prix took place in 1951 and the theme of the finest drivers on the toughest track continued, with Ascari, Farina and then Fangio further proving the point; the latter winning three races straight including his remarkable 1957 victory considered by many to be his greatest ever. The story, though well known, bears repeating, for on any other circuit than this, the Argentinian would not have been able to pull off such a feat. In qualifying Fangio signalled his intention by lapping a full 16 seconds inside his own lap record set the year before. Come race day more was to come. His Maserati 250F was fast on low fuel tanks but exceedingly thirsty and Fangio knew he would have to stop for fuel, unlike his rivals at Ferrari. Seizing the lead on lap three with a new record, he shattered his best time again and again. Nearly 30 seconds in the lead, he dived for the pits for fuel and rear tyres, rejoining to set off in pursuit of the Ferraris - now half a minute ahead themselves. Lap after lap, the Maserati closed, five whole seconds shaved from the record on one tour; eight seconds more the next. When, with a lap and a half to run, Fangio burst into the lead, it was the culmination of a drive that left the racing fraternity speechless. He was by then 46 years old. This "mod" is actually just a few simple tweaks of the track.ini file of the Nurburgring. And, as the track.ini files are copied/used from the host upon connecting, only if the host uses these settings, you can shorten your out-laps. It's just like the srtartgrid, the settings on the host determines the layout of the grid. And the position of the stalls. So do you all actually want to see rain in this game!? For me, it's hard enough as it is. I guess rain would be an interesting gimmick for impressing your friends who think they "rule all gamez", but I forecast that rain-races on Vroc will be very desolate. I'd rather see any programming effort turned on other things, like decent physics, errr, decent GFX, errr.... Dman, GPL has all!! A few new tracks would be nice, IMHO. Lol, If I leave out the lenses, I'll be having difficulty finding the steering wheel, let alone finding my way around the Ring... If anyone has tried it, and want more of that ("rain" simulation, I mean), well, try doing it with a 30/85 diff. Oh no! I'm glad there's no rain! When going into your final lap leading at the ring suddenly rain starts to drop... Don Scurlock <[email hidden]> schreef in berichtnieuws 8EE7EC510dscurlock@news...

Now now- remember, CART actually demands more versatility from the drivers than F1- to be an F1 champ, you only need to do be an expert in pristine manicured courses. Sure, there is Monaco- but you can blow that. In CART, you have to be a street racer, because there are six of them: Toronto, Vancouver, Houston, Surfers, Detroit, Long Beach. On top of that, you need to be a high-speed ovals racer, short ovals racer, pristine course racer... hell, even an airport runway racer! I do get sick of the short ovals though. I can handle really only two ovals- Michigan and Indianapolis (which has been off my list for 5 years now).
I would agree with that but with that fact in mind why do you think most CART racers tend to struggle when they come over to F1. Although it doesn't happen very often those that have done haven't had much success. Jacques Villeneuve obviously being the exception although this can probably be put down to his grounding in European racing prior to going to CART. Zanardi had a nightmare last year and despite some of this being down to a not very competetive car he was blown away by Ralf Schumacher almost every time they got in the car.
