Chasing the GPL "Authors"

13 posts by 10 people · 10 Feb 2000 - 17 Feb 2000

I was just dorking around aimlessly with GPL last night, kinda half watching replays and helping my kid do homework. I realized I still have the original replays that came with GPL. Hey, I thought, those used to blow me away when I was trying to learn how to drive. But, hey, I've got thousands of laps in now with highly-refined (not by me, mind you) set-ups at my disposal. I'll bet I look pretty good now in comparison. Boy, was I disappointed! To refresh your memories, here's how our beloved designers and beta testers could drive ONE-AND-A-HALF YEARS AGO! KYA -- Mike Laskey -- 12086 MEX -- Doug Arnao -- 15048 MON -- Dave Kaemmer -- 12933 MONZA -- Matt Sentell -- 13017 MOS -- D.A. -- 12313 NUR -- D.A. -- 82193 ROU -- D.K. -- 15928 SIL -- Alison Hine -- 13091 SPA -- D.K. -- 32034 WAT -- M.S. -- 10691 ZAN -- D.K. -- 12731 With all of the laps I've run, I've only beaten two of those -- predictably, Monza and the Glen. I've given up any thoughts of driving anywhere near the likes of Wolfgang, Greger, Ian, et. al. But I'm completely astounded that the folks above were able to run as fast as they did that long ago, knowing what they knew then about set-ups. Ah, well. I'm awarding myself two personal "Masters Points" for beating two of those times. Only 9 more tracks to work on. Whew, back to the wheel! Regards, Kurt
I set myself the goal to beat each of those times by at least one second and to date I've only beat four, and now that I've discovered VROC hotlapping is out the window. But I'm sure glad those replays were included as they have been a great goal to chase. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C.

After racing online, I've stopped trying to do hotlaps. And even more with the patch that eliminated low-rides remember Kurt. I've beaten 7 of them, so that's enough for me ;-P -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... Chasing the AI is still giving me the hoots! So, I'm not a hot-shoe. I really don't understand where and how the times are coming from. At Spa, my best is a lowly 3:24. More usually, I'm ecstatic with 3:27 in racing trim. Tonight, I noticed in the replays that Gurney, driving a supposedly identical Eagle, beats me solidly and consistently on the straights. I'm pulling away in the corners -- in, out, and through -- but he eats it all back up on the next straight. If I had to guess, he looks to have a 50 hp advantage. So, I have to ask, are there tweaks to be made in the .ini files to help me? Also, I don't think it's fair that they get into horrific wrecks and then just keep on coming. Gurney tried to pass on the inside going into Stavelot, and managed to get all the way by before the turn entrance. Swinging back out across my nose to pick up the racing line, he overcooked it and slid off into the fence on the outside. I was very pleased and surprised to see that the AI phucks up the same way I do. However, my glee was short-lived, as he was right back on my tail even before we left Stavelot. Checking the replay later, he simply caromed of the fence at 190+ mph, blipped down two gears, and kept right on coming. This was in practice for a GP race, with realistic damage (but apparently not for the AI). I held him off for 2 more laps by simply holding the racing line. Gurney would pull even or get a nose ahead coming into Masta and Stavelot, but would always fall back in line. He finally passed me for good when I caved and overpowered it coming out of Cottage. (He wasn't close enough to have rammed me. As I said, I beat him solidly through most corners.) I also notice AI-Gurney shifts at 10k rpm. The Eagle's engine explodes by lap 5 when I shift much higher than 9k. No doubt this gives him an acceleration and top speed advantage, but enough to pull all the way ahead between Masta and Stavelot??? We're at equal speed coming out of Masta; if anything, I have the slightest advantage by virtue of unloading and accelerating first. So, gents, what's the secret here? I have a MSFF set, so there isn't anything I can about possible pedal miscalibration. Where can I find more straightline speed? Beating the Authors is fine and dandy; I'm just looking to not be a tail-marker with the AI. I have a replay of 4 laps of this nonsense, including his unspectacular crash and miraculous recovery. If you'd care to critique, please let me know. Michael.

There are several utilities that can address the problematic AI. AI Tweaker is one of them, another is LPEdit. Both can be dl'd from places like The Pits or other GPL sites. On Sat, 12 Feb 2000 01:41:31 -0800, "Michael Young"

Well, I haven't beaten ANY of them, although I've gotten close with a 1:30.26 at Monza. The rest aren't even in the same TIME zone... :( Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends? Goto http://gpl.gamestats.com/vroc Never argue with an idiot. I *wish*! Nope. My PB is only 3:29 at Spa. Anything else was either a mistaken message, or a typo on my part. Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends?
