What next for Mr. Noonan??

25 posts by 18 people · 04 Feb 2000 - 05 Feb 2000

Wish list for Dave Noonan's next GPL track

Following the Osterreichring release, posters suggested historic tracks for GPL such as Montlhery, Reims, Solitude, Clermont-Ferrand, banked Monza and the Isle of Man, plus a CART-to-GPL converter. GPLEA's Phil Flack said Goodwood would follow Snetterton, and the thread debated whether track copyrights limit conversions.

My ideas for Mr. Noonan's next masterpiece are: Montlhery (complete with banking) Rheims - should be easy, but cool for online racing Solitude - top twisty sections Pescara (OK this could be a bit long) Any other votes? - Michael

What about banked monza. Sould be easy using the papyrus one to add the banked section Rafael
>My ideas for Mr. Noonan's next masterpiece are: >Montlhery (complete with banking) The GPL AI have trouble with bankings, so it would be good for hotlapping or online only. Hmm, like Spa without it's famous corners and elevation changes, but 2 hairpins? From the historic French circuits, I'd prefer Clermont-Ferrand. A real challenge. Yes, the 18 snake-like corners in Mahdental are unique. Plus the steep uphill "Misery" section and the speedy part to Bsnau. After Mr. Noonan released the O-Ring, I downloaded the maps+text that I had contributed to Darren Galpin's excellent "Tracks Around The World" in order to suggest it as one of the next tracks. I hope I can improve and expand the files and infos to lure Mr. Noonan into re-creating that classic 11.5km track on public roads. One of the Targa Florio versions is probably also too much to ask for. Le Mans - Bugatti. It's not the famous 24h circuit (it's used for the bike 24h though), it was called a Micky-Mouse track, but it was part of the real 1967 season and thus deserves to be in GPL. -- Matthias Flatt

ERRRRRR that's impossible due to the copyrights with the original Monza. I think.

Goodwood will be our next effort after Snetterton. Pescara and Clermont-Ferrand are the other tracks I'd like to make, but I don't think the fellow GPLEA'ers are keen :-( Phil ------------------------ Member of GPLEA http://www.gpl.netti.nu/

Matthias, do you have a website with info about this track? I don't know it, but it seems like a great track. I'd like to make it in GP2, perhaps. although, in that case, the track has to be shortened somewhat because of the 7.8km tracklength limit. Martijn

I would like to see some of those great tracks from GPL in N3. Like Kyalami in a stock car! Or better yet (ok here it goes) MOSPORT!!!! If Dave never did another thing he has made these sims much more than they were ever meant to be for me already. Thanks Dave. Al Stiff

Eh well ;) Track likeness and name are the propriety of the owners of that same track. You per example cannot create a 2.5mile Superspeedway with a tri-oval and rename it "Florida Speedway", with different graphics. That would probably be the limit of what's legal and not. Actually you could fight in court about the "likeness", if it only includes specs from the track diagram or the surroundings of it. You could change simply the stretch banking a couple of degrees, same for the radius of the corners, how large the track is. hmm As for Monza, creating anything like the Oval + Road course is definitely against the likeness of the track. In a court you would loose. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... But why is this any different for the Monza oval/road course than any other track? Can't see why copyright should be the reason not to do it, as copyrighting of the track didn't stop Dave from making Brands Hatch or ?sterreichring (I very much doubt Dave got the licence from these tracks to make copies...). In fact since Papy already has the licence for the use of Monza in GPL, I see fewer problems with making that, than any other real track... -- Arne Martin

Please check: [link lost in import] following the Benelux+Germany link. No. I plead guilty. But I should be able to fix that, or at least send mails. I've got to work and travel, though, so I'm usually at the wrong places. It is. Or was. :-/ Then, www.stuttgart.de offers a clickable "Stadtplan" map that includes the main part of the Solitude on the westernmost edge of the track. I've started to add the pieces together some night ago. And of course, I have real street maps of Stuttgart at home, a magazin article and even an old programm from the 60s. Because the Solitude was rather forgotten, I developed a small interest in it, just like for the Ring, but I never made a serious attempt to collect stuff. A detailed map should be available somewhere to get the elevations right. For the driving impression, a video or mpeg would be good. But I don't have equipment nor experience in that. And, the Solitude is right between the places I live, so I can drive there quite often. ;-) Ah yes, I remember that limit. Made the Ring totally impossible. I tried once to erase the chicanes in Hockenheim, but failed. -- Matthias Flatt

Does anyone else see the similarity to the Indy F1 track? You know, try to create interest for the F1 race by taking a famous track/race and then using a crappy parklot track, so only the name of the race lives up to the real track... -- Arne Martin

Well, Bruce, I have to disagree on the "temporary": it's still there. Sorry. It might have caused a shock that took 20 years to overcome, but F3000 raced there from 1987 on, some Motorbike GPs very held there, and the 24h race for bikers is still there. Plus national events and racing schools. Eg. comparing it to the infamous Caesas Palace parking thingy would not be fair. Bugatti is a short safe track that's perfect for many kinds of racing. I hope the flying Mercedes acts of 1999 does not make the organizers move the 24h for cars there, though. -- Matthias Flatt

1st) copyrights are to be enforced by the owner. So you can do anything you want, but the actual trackauthority is the only one who can make a fuss about it. That makes it easy for no-longer existing tracks. But I know a Daytona project for Nascar1 got cancelled after threats of the Daytona speedway corp for legal action against this team. A commercial project is much more likely to get attention , than a 3rd party addition like Noonan's or the 400 tracks that were recreated for GP2. 2) The fact that Papy has the rights for Monza hasnothing to do with a 3rd party making a Monza track. Papy is, after all, NOT making this Monza track, so they are not a party in this. 3) you are using part of copyrighted material (the Monza.DAT file) if you use the Monza-track of Papyrus as a base of your track. You cannot redistribute converted tracks (N3 -> GPL) either for this reason. Law school continues tomorrow :-)

I know it is not the right track but I would like the Le Mans 24 hour track with the long straight. Phil, if you do Goodwood, please consider providing a cover image from one of the recent Goodwood Revival programmes.
