Well it went a little like this: I had run several laps off my five gallon fuel load and the tires on my ferrari are good and sticky. This is going to be the one... THE LAP I've been waiting for, my first 106.xx lap at Watkins Glen. I cross the start finish line to begin my historic journey. I'm glideing nicely though the esses, hugging the apexes just like I had imagined in my head. Comming out of turn 3 to the long front straight, a quick glance down reveals slightly more RPM than I had ever seen before. Things are indead going well. Hard breaking and a slight nudge on the wheel get me into the loop. Ahhhh I see that nice Goodyear sidewall staring at me... motionless... maybe braking a little too hard, huh? No problem, rolling of the brake slightly and the rear end stays where it should be. Off the loop and through the gears to the speed trap. Hugging the rail as best I can. Straightening up and *** the brakes to negotiate the last few turns. Now to the ninety, which has cause me the most problems, down to 2nd.. now 1st.. tuuuuuuuurning in, I made it! Now ON THE GAS.. HUH?!? (Engine kinda gurgling) NO!!!!!!. I'm running out of fuel! I cross the start finish and hit F2 to check my replay. 107.17 AHHHHHHH! Well, this was truely heartbraking, to run out of fuel and gurgle across the finish line missing my goal by 17 hundredths of a second. A lesser man may have done something drastic like goto bed, but I ventured on, hit shift-R and finally prevailed about 8 laps later with a time of 106.99. (Replay analyser actually says 106.992, lol) I am obviously no Hot-Shoe as my times reveal, but I sure do have fun trying. I have a lot of respect for y'all running 103's out there. Even so,I have never felt so much pride in accomplishing so little. Thanks Papyrus for a great sim.
I know exactly how you feel. Tonight I was trying to beat a 1:26 at mosport. I set out in the eagle and many laps later with tire marks all over the track, I did a 1:23 :) Now I have 2 tracks in my sights to work on. To get under a 1:30 at Silverstone and under 2:00 at Rouen. Guess come to think of it, under 1:50 at Mexico. Back to practicing. Anthony

Well ive made it under 1:30 at Monza but never even turned a 1:07 at Watkins Glen. I can run 1:08s all day long with a few 1:09s thrown in but never turned a 1:07. Best i ever did was a 1:08.00 missed it by .01 (or actually .001) of a second. I think my quest will be held up now though due to the apperance of the Osterrieching :) Chris
Great going. I just unpacked the sim today and 106.xx is a looooong way off. These cars are hella tough to drive. Still don't even want to think about locking up the brakes. Had a blast today practicing the Glen and even tried a GP (crashed second lap as I foolishly tried to pass going into the loop--hit the fence lost a wheel and came to rest by some hay bales and of course i saved the replay). I am amazed at how well this sim plays and the force feedback effects. I just love trying to drift the cars through a turn--it just feels so right. Heck, I am giddy with e***ment. I haven't played racing sims before because I didn't have a wheel. Now that I do I feel lucky and spoiled to have GPL (and RC2K) to play. Oh well, I'm off to try for 1:12 :-) Christian Hansen >I know exactly how you feel. Tonight I was trying to beat a 1:26 at mosport.

<snip> Congrats BigDog! I find I set personal bests, in any racing game I play, when I am not trying specifically for them. online, but lately I am desparate and want to race online sooooo bad. 2 races and 2 discos due to the cable modem loosing sync. arrrgh. 3rd race is the charm tho. Make it all the way thro qual. Make it all the way thro the race. Yeeesssssss. But the best part is when I check the lap times post race. *4* sub 1.07 laps. Three of those bang! bang! bang! [say it like Murray ;) ] one right after another. My previous PB was a 1.07:02. My new PB is a shiny new 1.06:57. Kicked the old PB in the keester, and didn't even expect to. All I was trying to do was make it to the end of the race in one piece. Today I feel great. I can do anything. Solve world hunger. Lower everyones taxes. Eliminate unemployment. Get a date. Well, o.k., maybe a date is stretching it. But dammit! I got under 1.07! Just about anything is in my grasp.

Last Lap - had the lead by about 40 seconds(first lead in AGES). Engine started to cough a little past the S/F line. Finally died going into Parabolica. I resisted the temptation to Shift-R and refuel. I coasted across the finish line, and lost by .57 sec. <AUGH!> I did think about doing a Shift-R, but I thought that would be unsporting, so I didn't. Surprised the HELL out of the (formerly)second place driver...<g> If it happens again, I'm not so sure.. :) Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends?
